Aubusson Furniture

AUBUSSON STYLE

Although the production of authentic Aubusson textiles and other furniture is based in Aubusson, France, and at just a handful of small weaving workshops in nearby Felletin, the exceptionally detailed tapestries are renowned throughout the world as wall hangings, carpets and upholstery for a range of seating including sofas and armchairs.

Aubusson’s centuries-old tapestry production industry was inscribed on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2009 by UNESCO, affirming its importance in European decorative arts. The complex and labor-intensive process of weaving images involves hand-dyed wool to achieve specific hues, giving landscapes, scenes and floral patterns a distinctive realism.

Dating back at least to the 16th century, the Aubusson style has changed over time, with early work influenced by Turkish rugs that were popular with the European elite before the rise of the Italian Renaissance with its natural motifs. In 1665, the Aubusson workshops received the Manufacture Royale title, raising their visibility in France and beyond during the 17th century, with many authentic Aubusson tapestries produced for royal palaces and other prominent residences.

In the 18th century, the design of Aubusson textiles reflected the fad for chinoiserie. During the Arts and Crafts movement of the late 19th century, artisans from Aubusson were involved with the Old Windsor Tapestry Manufactory in England. In the 20th century, now-iconic artists such as Alexander Calder and Joan Miró worked with Aubusson weavers on pieces.

The Cité Internationale de la Tapisserie complex, which features a museum, opened in 2016 in Aubusson to recognize and preserve this heritage.

17th Century Fine Brussels Tapestry, Silk Wool, Green, Blue, Red, Battle Scene
Located in Port Washington, NY
In the late 17th century, Brussels tapestry weavers achieved remarkable heights of artistry and technique, exemplified by a fine tapestry from circa 1680 that vividly depicts a dramatic battle scene. This masterpiece, crafted from a blend of silk and wool, showcases a rich array of colors—primarily blues, greens, and reds—that create a visually arresting narrative. The central motif of the tapestry is a dynamic and detailed battle scene, where the vibrant hues of blues, greens, and reds intertwine to convey the intensity and chaos of the conflict. The blues range from deep, somber tones that suggest a foreboding sky or tumultuous waters, to lighter, almost ethereal shades that might evoke a sense of movement or distance. Greens provide a lush, verdant backdrop, perhaps representing a forested terrain or rolling hills, and contrast strikingly with the reds that highlight the uniforms of the soldiers, the banners they bear, or the flashes of conflict. The tapestry’s execution in silk and wool adds a luxurious texture and depth to the image. The silk contributes a lustrous sheen to the colors, enhancing their vibrancy and making the reds particularly vivid. The wool, with its more subdued texture, provides a rich, tactile quality that adds to the overall grandeur of the piece. Framing this central battle tableau is an intricately detailed border that serves as both a decorative and narrative element. This border features a lively array of figures, fruits, and birds, rendered with the same meticulous attention to detail as the central scene. The figures, often depicted in an elegant and somewhat theatrical style, may include allegorical or mythological characters, adding layers of symbolism and context to the tapestry. The fruits, depicted in lush, vibrant colors, provide a contrast to the intensity of the battle, symbolizing abundance and prosperity. Birds, possibly rendered in mid-flight or perched gracefully, enhance the sense of movement and liveliness that permeates the artwork. The border’s detailed design serves to frame the central action, drawing the viewer's eye inward and providing a harmonious balance to the overall composition. It is not merely a decorative element but an integral part of the tapestry, enriching the narrative and adding to its visual complexity. In its entirety, this Brussels tapestry from the late 17th century stands as a testament to the skill and artistry of its creators. Its use of color, texture, and detailed border elements reflects the opulence and sophistication of the period, making it a significant example of the era's weaving artistry and a captivating portrayal of historical and artistic grandeur. The Battle of Cannae: Hannibal's Masterstroke The Battle of Cannae, fought in 216 BC during the Second Punic War, is one of the most celebrated and studied military engagements in history. The conflict took place between the forces of Carthage, led by the brilliant general Hannibal Barca, and the Roman...

Antique Ivory French Aubusson Rug. Size: 10 ft x 13 ft 6 in
Located in New York, NY
Stunning antique French Aubusson rug, country of origin: France, date circa 1900 - Size: 10 ft x 13 ft 6 in (3.05 m x 4.11 m). This delicate French Aubusson rug has a dreamy, romantic feel. It was created around the turn of the 20th century. Even though it is over 100 years old, it is the perfect piece for several contemporary design trends. This piece is recognizably an Aubusson that uses softer pinks and pastels, which is a hallmark of Aubusson works. This carpet is a finely woven tapestry. It has a backing to protect it from wear. The design has a Rococo feel with its sweeping curves, scrollwork, and trompe l’oeil floral patterns. Curvy, natural forms are a characteristic of late Baroque and Victorian design. This carpet would be perfectly at home in a formal room with gilding, elegant antique furniture, and brocades throughout. It has a classic feel that is refined and elegant. It also has an aged look that gives it a shabby chic feel, too. Romance pink and millennial pink are among the most popular color trends...

Late 19th Century Antique French Aubusson Rug, Hotel Lobby Size Carpet
By Eugène-Pierre Gourdet, Jules-Edmond-Charles Lachaise
Located in Dallas, TX
74394 Late 19th Century Antique Aubusson Rug, 14'06 x 25'03. A French Aubusson rug refers to a type of flat-weave rug that originated in the town of Aubusson, located in the Creuse region of central France. These rugs have a long history dating back to the 15th century, and they are renowned for their exquisite craftsmanship, intricate designs, and fine materials. Exuding an aura of true decadence, this Late 19th Century antique French Aubusson rug emerges as a mesmerizing testament to handwoven beauty. Its intricate details and luxurious texture captivate the senses, offering a glimpse into the opulent world of Aubusson craftsmanship. At its heart lies an elaborate design reminiscent of a palatial facade. A central acanthus leaf oval ceiling medallion, outlined by complementary scrollwork, evokes romantic connotations, while an array of quincunx motifs, reminiscent of the ceiling designs by Jules-Edmond-Charles Lachaise and Eugene-Pierre Gourdet, adorn the field in an alluring pattern. Trompe l'oeil filigree adorns a delicate light pink oval band encircling the inner composition, where a rose festoon intertwines with a floral swag, adding a touch of delicate elegance. Resplendent round cartouche pendants dangle from an undulating ribbon band entwined with floral swag borders, further enhancing the rug's grandeur. This antique Aubusson rug is enclosed by an acanthus ribbon border, coupled with an outer scallop border, creating a refined frame for its formal composition. These design elements, customary for Aubusson arrangements, showcase the style's predominant French influence, featuring ornate armorial medallions within intricate borders of rinceaux and garnished foliage. But it is not only the embellishments that captivate; the extraordinary use of color adds depth and allure to the rug's narrative. Each hue harmonizes with the next, creating a mesmerizing dance that speaks with a timeless voice of sensual decadence and stately elegance. In its entirety, this Aubusson masterpiece weaves together the tender, emotive, and vibrant details of human history, embodying the grand charm of a textile that transcends time, leaving an indelible mark on those who behold its beauty. Abrash. Desirable Age Wear. Some Discoloration. Handwoven wool. Made in France. Measures: 14'06 x 25'03. Hotel Lobby Size Carpet 15 x 25 Rug...
