Brazilian Dining Room Tables

BRAZILIAN FURNITURE

More often than not, vintage mid-century Brazilian furniture designs, with their gleaming wood, soft leathers and inviting shapes, share a sensuous, unique quality that distinguishes them from the more rectilinear output of American and Scandinavian makers of the same era.

Commencing in the 1940s and '50s, a group of architects and designers transformed the local cultural landscape in Brazil, merging the modernist vernacular popular in Europe and the United States with the South American country's traditional techniques and indigenous materials.

Key mid-century influencers on Brazilian furniture design include natives Oscar NiemeyerSergio Rodrigues and José Zanine Caldas as well as such European immigrants as Joaquim TenreiroJean Gillon and Jorge Zalszupin. These creators frequently collaborated; for instance, Niemeyer, an internationally acclaimed architect, commissioned many of them to furnish his residential and institutional buildings.

The popularity of Brazilian modern furniture has made household names of these designers and other greats. Their particular brand of modernism is characterized by an émigré point of view (some were Lithuanian, German, Polish, Ukrainian, Portuguese, and Italian), a preference for highly figured indigenous Brazilian woods, a reverence for nature as an inspiration and an atelier or small-production mentality.

Hallmarks of Brazilian mid-century design include smooth, sculptural forms and the use of native woods like rosewoodjacaranda and pequi. The work of designers today exhibits many of the same qualities, though with a marked interest in exploring new materials (witness the Campana Brothers' stuffed-animal chairs) and an emphasis on looking inward rather than to other countries for inspiration.

Find a collection of vintage Brazilian furniture on 1stDibs that includes chairssofastables and more.

Jorge Zalszupin Guanabara Rosewood Vintage Dining Table, 1959, Brazilian Design
By Jorge Zalszupin, L Atelier San Paulo
Located in New York, NY
The iconic Guanabara is a table designed by Jorge Zalszupin (1922-2020) in 1959 and produced by his company, L'atelier. A long rosewood patchwork top rests over two concrete bases finished with black leather. This patchwork solution is present in other pieces designed by Zalszupin. Modern design taught us to use the material rationally, using the design as a tool to void waste. Aesthetically, the patchwork explores the different tones of the Brazilian Rosewood beautifully, achieving a fantastic result. At the time, the Guanabara table was presented as a dynamic piece that could be used in corporate spaces (as a meeting table...

Giuseppe Scapinelli Extendable Dining Table for Angelini Delneri, Brazil 1950s
By Giuseppe Scapinelli
Located in Utrecht, NL
Giuseppe Scapinelli was known as a designer who successfully combined “the classic” with “the modern”, and this table stands as evidence. Scapinelli was a Brazilian designer from São Paulo who did not use any means of mass production. His furniture alternated and combined elements from Italian classicism, innovative aerodynamic lines, and biomorphic shapes. This rare circular table has an amazing construction that praises the firm, Angelini & Delneri. Upon first sight, this model is an elegant circular table made of beautifully grained wood. However, when the table is extended, the elaborate system is revealed by which the extra wooden leaves can be added to extend the length. The artisanal level craftsmanship is as stunning as the design itself, with traditional joinery techniques such as pegs and so-called ‘biscuit’ joints. Besides the extension system, the craftsmanship is also evident in every edge and angle, such as the legs’ curve and the ring strengthening them. This table is very successful at balancing large volumes with clean lines. The legs have rounded edges and are slightly splayed below the wooden ring. This memorable design is from a designer committed to pushing the boundaries of modernist design in Brazil. The form is functional and elegant with subtle flourishes like intricate wooden details and the evident emphasis on functionality. This dining table is a grand piece that will stand out and add character to any interior. Condition: In good vintage condition. Wear consistent with age and use. Dimensions: 47.24 in Ø x 28.34 in H 120 cm Ø x 72 cm H About the designer: Giuseppe Scapinelli was born in Reggio Emilia in Italy on the 2nd of July 1911 and was the 6th of thirteen sons. He graduated after studying architecture in 1941. However, just as his career was starting, it was abruptly interrupted by WW2, and he was forced to live in seclusion in an antique furniture shop...

Joaquim Tenreiro round dining table Brazil 1960
By Joaquim Tenreiro
Located in Roosendaal, Noord Brabant
Beautiful and super rare round dining table by Joaquim Tenreiro, Brazil 1960. The precision and attention to detail by Tenreiro are visible in every inch of this creation. Each curve and joint speak of his masterful understanding of the medium, transforming solid wood into an ethereal masterpiece. Made of solid rosewood, the table's thin, round structure gracefully holds a smooth, transparent glass top, allowing to see the beauty of the minimalistic cross base. The legs of this table are slender, accentuating the table's lightness. This incredibly rare dining table by Joaquim Tenreiro goes beyond just being useful. Its design is timeless, giving us a glimpse into the creative mind of a true artist. Joaquim Tenreiro was born into a family of woodworkers and carpenters in Melo, Gouveia Municipality, Portugal. In the late 1920s, he moved to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and started working for the company Laubisch Hirth...

Mid-Century Modern Dining Table in Tubular Chrome Wood by Geraldo Barros, 1970
By Geraldo de Barros
Located in New York, NY
Available today, this midcentury dining table with chrome tubular base and wood is a showstopper! The wood has been refinished, the metal cleaned up and the overall piece is in excellent condition. The table fits 4-6 people comfortably as shown in the pictures. This piece has all the fun aspects of a true bold Mid-Century Modern piece -- clean, angular swooping lines that give the piece an almost googie look that is unmistakably Mid-Century Modern. This table effortlessly flexes into any Mid-Century Modern, modern, Danish modern or contemporary environment. This piece would also look wonderful in a boho chic, chinoiserie, or Hollywood Regency styled home or office as well. This table was found in a private office in Curitiba (the capital of Parana, a southern state in Brazil) where all the furniture was from Geraldo de Barros for Hobjeto. About the author: Geraldo de Barros (1923-1998) was one of the key players of the Modernist movement in Brazil in the 1950s. Originally a painter close to the European avant-garde and the Pioneer of abstract photography in Brazil in the 1940s (his works are part of the MoMa collection), Geraldo de Barros went to furniture-making in the early 1950s, seeking a more popular artform that would make his work available to a larger audience - which was more or less the IDEA behind the Bauhaus movement. In 1954, he founded the company Unilabor with a Dominican priest and skilled tradesmen. Unilabor was run by its employees and all benefits shared between them, thus becoming the first communitarian business in Modern Brazil history. Unilabor grew quickly to become one of the most important furniture companies in the country, but internal disputes led to the end of the company in 1967. In 1964, De Barros went on to found in association with Aloísio Bione another furniture design company called Hobjeto. After Unilabor, Hobjeto was a more capitalistic project but without losing his constructive characteristics. Until his retirement in 1989, de Barros designed and projected in-numerous furniture lines in this Industrial manner. He even built a personal workshop in the factory to project and create his last painting series in Formica. The furniture and the paintings are finally created using the same techniques. Rosewood Dining Table with Glass Top, Joaquim Tenreiro, 1947, Midcentury Brazil
By Joaquim Tenreiro
Located in New York, NY
This exquisitely crafted dining table, designed by Joaquim Tenreiro (1906-1992) in 1947, evokes a refined coexistence of traditional values and modern aesthetics. Its delicate shapes give the impression that the pieces float in the space. Tenreiro came to see the often heavy, overstuffed pieces that dominated the market as being incompatible with a tropical country like Brazil. He promoted furniture that was formally light, as described in his own words: “Lightness, which has nothing to do with the weight per se, but with grace and functionality in space.” Our pieces present original stamps of Tenreiro Móveis e Decorações...
