‘Stilton’ Antique Cheese Table
Located in Wormelow, Herefordshire
A rare and very unusual antique glazed stoneware cheese table, painted with the word ‘Stilton’ circa 1880. This is just one of a series of similar diary tables we are selling sourced from an English country house. You can just imagine this dairy table laid out in the chilled larder of a country house pantry; the glazed stoneware surface cool to the touch, keeping a large block of blue and white English Stilton cheese fresh, ready for the supper of the Lords and the Ladies of the house that evening. Steeped in history, this antique dairy table...

Chinese Chippendale Mahogany Console Table
Located in New Orleans, LA
This English mahogany console table is a rare period example of the elaborate Chinese Chippendale style. A study in symmetry and balance, this table combines the restrained elegance of the Georgian period with the intricate artistry of the Orientalist aesthetic. Elaborate fretwork on the frieze and pierced supports are beautifully matched by fluted legs. As a whole, it represents a stunning marriage of Chippendale craftsmanship and Eastern design. Small, decorative tables such as this represented the great influence that China had in European decorative and Fine art beginning in the 1600s. Since the Restoration of the monarchy, there had been a growing interest in Chinese-style design forms in England. Called "chinoiserie" in French, this style had become extremely popular by the middle of the 18th century, and designers such as Thomas Chippendale eagerly adopted the elaborate Eastern designs. By the mid-1750s, the Vauxhall Pleasure Gardens were sporting "Chinese Pavilions...

Hundert s English Oak Side Table (PATTERN ON RIGHT FACING SIDE)
Located in Manchester, GB
This wonderfully unique mid century style side table is made of quarter sawn English Oak and will work well in the bedrooms, living rooms and elsewhere. It's unique design is inspired by the artist Hundertwasser, who believed everybody deserved to be surrounded by beautiful things. With the hole cut out at the back, these pieces are often used as bedside tables, with electricals being easily stored and charged in the drawer whilst avoiding distractions in the night. The choice of the patterns on either side or both sides makes this piece sutiable for multiple locations. Made from the highest quality quarter sawn English Oak this piece is solidly built, and will last many generations. The drawer is made from a combination of English Oak and high grade ply, with a drawer height of 9cm. It is finished in a hard wax oil that makes the piece easy to care for. As with all my pieces, everything is made by Gareth 'Goldfinch...

Near Pair of Candle Stands or Torchères, Late 17th Century, English
Located in BUNGAY, SUFFOLK
Due to their utilitarian nature, surviving pairs of 17th century candle stands/torchères are extremely rare and generally only seen today in great houses. The quality of the marquetry decoration and the attention to detail indicate that these candle stands were probably made for a substantial household. The turned stems displays the skill of the turner, and create fluidity, variety of form, emphasing the quality of the solid walnut grain and the floral inlay as well as holding and balancing the form of the top. The sweeping, scroll feet balance the proportion and fluidity of the candle stands/torchères, giving them presence. They are sturdy and in excellent condition. Virtually identical turnings and form. Both with octagonal tops, one with a central marquetry floral spray, the other plain. The upper sections with solid walnut baluster and ring turnings leading into lower octagonal sections decorated with marquetry floral sprays repeated 3 times. The stems supported by octagonal blocks with a repeat of the floral spray and scroll tripod bases with two floral sprays on the upper facing sections. Excellent original colour and patina. English. Height 96cm, Top diameter 29cm Moveable stands to support a candlestick or lamp were intended to supplement the fixed lighting arrangements of rooms. The evidence of inventories suggests that they did not become common in France until about 1650 when they accompanied fine tables and cabinets. Such stands, being sometimes in the form of gueridons. The fashion for decorative candlestands spread rapidly after the Restoration, when they were often made en-suite to flank a sidetable with a mirror above. Such sets are mentioned in lists of household goods and by contemporary writers. In 1664, for instance, Mary Verney is anxious to obtain “a table and stands of the same coler”. The Academy of Armory, published in 1688, defines a candle-stand as a “little round table...

Early 19th Century Regency Specimen Table by Gillows of Lancaster and London
By Gillows of Lancaster London
Located in Dublin 8, IE
Early 19th century regency marble top specimen centre table made by Gillows of Lancaster and London, the statuary white marble top with central stylized neoclassical motif depicting a temple and star surrounded with inlaid radiating specimens of rare and ancient stones such as Giallo Antico, Verde Antico, Rosso Antico, Sienna, Jasper and Portoro set within carved gadrooned, cabochon and bead border supported on turned baluster pod with barley twist and acanthus motif on trefoil base raised over cabriole leg with acanthus motif on knee terminating on paw foot. Provenance: Torridon House Torridon House is situated on the northern shore of upper loch Torridon, beneath the dramatic mountain ridges of Beinn Alligin and Liathach, the house was built by Duncan Darroch in 1876 on an estate bought from the McBarnets and previously the possession of the Lords of the Isles. The architect was Alexander Ross, who built inverness cathedral. Constructed from the famous Torridon red sandstone, it was designed for family living, as well as to support parties during the shooting and fishing seasons. In the early 20th century it changed hands several times until it was bought by the 4th Earl of Lovelace in 1960. The Lovelaces had previously lived at Ben Damph on the south side of the Loch, which had been in their possession since 1886. Torridon is currently the home of the 5th earl and his wife. The Lovelace title belongs to the King family, who trace their history back to Exeter. Sir Peter King (circa 1669-1734) was the maternal nephew of the philosopher John Locke...
