Georg Karl Pfahler is considered the only important representative of the Hard Edge in Germany; he was a guest at the Biennales in Venice and São Paolo, taught in Nuremberg and Salzburg and was awarded numerous prizes.
Georg Karl Pfahler was born on October 8, 1926 in Emetzheim, Bavaria. He spent his childhood and youth on his parents' farm, far away from any art. Nevertheless, he loved painting and drawing from an early age and cultivated it intensively as a childhood pastime. However, Georg Karl Pfahler only received the impetus to study art in 1948 when he met students from the Nuremberg Art Academy and accepted their invitation. His parents, good but simple country folk, had no interest in their son's newly awakened passion, and the young man was also met with incomprehension in his home village. However, Georg Karl Pfahler did not let this put him off, but attended the Academy of Fine Arts in Nuremberg for two years, where he came into contact with original art for the first time and became acquainted with the works of Marc Chagall and Paul Klee. A wonderfully designed and exceptionally rare hand painted, earthenware three tile/panel plaque/ wall hanging by ceramics masters husband and wife artists Vivika and Otto Heino. Quite heavy and substantial in size. The couple was best known for their inspired designs and distinctive glazes.
This massive 3 tile plaque, which shows clear signs of Asian influence, is attached to a board for hanging. Again exceptionally rare in both scale and design. We have never seen another like this by the couple.
The work is signed and dated (1988).
Would be the crown jewel in any Heino collection and sure to stand out in any setting, modern or otherwise. Very unique. Very rare.
Dimensions: 47.5" high, 18" wide, 1.5" deep.
The piece is quite substantial and weighs 44 pounds.
The couple are winners of the following awards:
Gold Medal from the sixth Biennale internationale de céramique d'art, in Vallauris, France, (1978).
Silver medal from the International Ceramics Exhibitions in Ostend, Belgium, (1959).

“Absolut Statehood” a Folio of 51 Lithographs Representating Each State, plus DC

We were extremely fortunate to come across a magnificent set of 51 lithographs from a series that Absolut sponsored in 1992-3. They are accompanied by a book with commentary by Glenn O’Brien and Photography by Antonio Alia Guccione. The book is signed by Antonio Guccione. Absolut commissioned 51 artists to create a work to represent the state they come from. In addition Washington D.C. is represented as well for a total of 51 lithograph in the group. They are all hand numbered and signed by the artists 62/400. We are, unfortunately missing the original folio box, but we have a shipping crate and they are all separated by acid free paper. The initial photograph is from an ad that Absolut ran in 1993. It is not included in the group. I pulled it off the internet to illustrate all of the images. I can only upload 20 images to this site at a time so I chose a few of my personal favorites. If you would like to see any specific image i will gladly send pictures. . They are all in good condition except for a couple of marks to one or two. Also included is commemorative sheet of stamps.

Absolut Statehood was one of Absolut Vodka’s biggest, most ambitious art projects. From throughout the US, 51 artists, one from each state plus Washington, D.C., were commissioned to create “state portraits” representing their home states. The artworks were published once a fortnight in the national daily newspaper USA Today during 1992 and 1993. In conjunction with the campaign, lithographs of every piece were sold, numbered and signed by the artist. All proceeds, totalling some 4 million dollars, were donated to the Design Industries Foundation Fighting AIDS (DIFFA) to support medical research.
At a time when HIV and AIDS were still a death sentence, the Statehood campaign helped disseminate a more empathic understanding of the illness.
And to sell a vodka.
