Faust and Marguerite
Faust is tired of his old life and wants to kill himself. In a final burst of bitter anger, he invokes the devil. The devil appears in the guise of Mephistopheles and offers him a pact: he will grant him what he desires most in the world in exchange for his servitude. Faust asks him for youth and his help in seducing Marguerite. When he achieves his goal, bound by his contract with the devil, Faust abandons the latter who is waiting for her child. Filled with remorse, he returns to her, but kills Valentin, Marguerite's brother who tries to stop him, during a duel. He then tries to save the life of Marguerite who is imprisoned for infanticide, but he fails. Like this multifaceted character, the vocal treat-ment chosen by Gounod is differentiated: sometimes very lyrical with touching flights, sometimes very cold and repetitive to evoke her detachment from the world of men.
Marguerite is young and naive. She lets herself be seduced by the charming and mysterious character of Faust and thus causes her own downfall as well as that of her family (her brother and her child will die).

The painting has a captivating illuminating light with beautiful vibrant colours, it depicta a busy waterway with fishing and sailing boats in the foreground and the town of Amsterdam in the back ground.
William Raymond Dommersen was a painter of genre and landscapes in and around Scotland and Northern England. His works are widely exhibited throughout the European and North American continents and are on show at many galleries worldwide.
William travelled quite extensively in Europe on painting expeditions with his father
Dommersen’s paintings have been much admired over a period of time and it is evident that he is now firmly established in the history of architectural painting as is refelected in the auction prices at Christies:

William Raymond Dommersen
was born at the end of 1859 in Stratford, West Ham, London as the only son of the Anglo / Dutch fine art painter Pieter Cornelis Dommersen and Anna Petronella Synja. His parents had moved from the Netherlands in 1855 to London, England. His uncle, Cornelis Christiaan Dommersen, was also a painter in the Netherlands. It is possible that when his father received British nationality that they changed their family name – van Dommershuijsen – into the more English sounding surname Dommersen.
Dommersen painted between 1875 and 1927 genre pieces, landscapes, marine scenes, village- and town-scenes of quality. His best known works are the European villages and towns along rivers and canals...

Bridgman exhibited a near identical version, approximately one third of its size, at the Paris Salon of 1896, no. 311 (for illustration, see Sotheby's, February 12, 1997, lot 71). The painting certainly raised eyebrows and stirred feisty commentary when it was exhibited at London's Royal Academy. As one critic wrote in the Atheneum:
