Modern Paintings
MODERN STYLE
The late 19th and early 20th centuries saw sweeping social change and major scientific advances — both of which contributed to a new aesthetic: modernism. Rejecting the rigidity of Victorian artistic conventions, modernists sought a new means of expression. References to the natural world and ornate classical embellishments gave way to the sleek simplicity of the Machine Age. Architect Philip Johnson characterized the hallmarks of modernism as “machine-like simplicity, smoothness or surface [and] avoidance of ornament.”
Early practitioners of modernist design include the De Stijl (“The Style”) group, founded in the Netherlands in 1917, and the Bauhaus School, founded two years later in Germany.
Followers of both groups produced sleek, spare designs — many of which became icons of daily life in the 20th century. The modernists rejected both natural and historical references and relied primarily on industrial materials such as metal, glass, plywood, and, later, plastics. While Bauhaus principals Marcel Breuer and Ludwig Mies van der Rohe created furniture from mass-produced, chrome-plated steel, American visionaries like Charles and Ray Eames worked in materials as novel as molded plywood and fiberglass. Today, Breuer’s Wassily chair, Mies van der Rohe’s Barcelona chair — crafted with his romantic partner, designer Lilly Reich — and the Eames lounge chair are emblems of progressive design and vintage originals are prized cornerstones of collections.
It’s difficult to overstate the influence that modernism continues to wield over designers and architects — and equally difficult to overstate how revolutionary it was when it first appeared a century ago. But because modernist furniture designs are so simple, they can blend in seamlessly with just about any type of décor. Don’t overlook them.

This rare mid-20th-century work portrays a seated U.S. Army Air Forces officer—smiling faintly, cigarette in hand, and with a small black-bound diary resting on his lap—lost in reverie as smoke from his cigarette rises and transforms into the visages of three idealized male figures. Rendered in an illustrative realist style with tonal sensitivity and surreal suggestion, the composition invites interpretation as an interior portrait of desire, intimacy, and memory—quietly coded, emotionally sincere, and possibly autobiographical.
The figure wears a regulation-issue A-2 leather flight jacket, iconic of U.S. Army Air Forces personnel during WWII. The jacket is detailed with a personalized, hand-painted circular patch depicting a lion rampant in a blue roundel—a heraldic symbol of power, pride, and possibly self-invention. An American flag patch is affixed to the left shoulder. The jacket, traditionally worn by bomber crews, officers, and pilots, functions here not only as a marker of military identity but as a gendered and cultural signifier—suggesting the complex intersection of duty, masculinity, and private identity. The slightly open collar, relaxed posture, and cigarette suggest the officer is off-duty—physically grounded but mentally elsewhere.
The seated figure’s companions—summoned in smoke—appear above and behind him in a dreamlike procession: a helmeted infantryman, a pilot in goggles, and a hat-wearing civilian (?) man posed in pin-up style. Each face is rendered with tenderness and idealization, not as ghosts or casualties, but as romantic or erotic conquests: remembered lovers, fleeting encounters, or imagined partners. Their expressions, softly lit and emotionally present, reflect a form of desire neither tormented nor tragic. This is not a meditation on loss but on intimacy remembered, perhaps treasured.

Large Stunning Australian Aboriginal Painting by Naata Nungurrayi

A large and stunning contemporary abstract painting by celebrated Australian Aboriginal artist Naata Nungurrayi (1932-2021), stretched and ready for display. A rare masterpiece of the museum quality dating from the peak of the artist's creative output in 2003. The canvas is singular in both the impressive size and tine quality, and it comes with full provenance and step by step photos (100 in total) recording the creation of this significant piece of work.
The artist used fine dots as the sole element to compose a complex dreamtime landscape where Women's Ceremony took place in her ancestral time. The place is located at Marrapinti and its surrounds, where many water soakage holes were located. Dots in brilliant shifting and contrasting colors form ceremonial Tingari symbols performed by the women, black crawling tracks that may be associated with a site called Karilywarra (two carpet snakes) and mesmerizing Tali (sandhill) movements surrounding the canvas. The work is of the signature style of the artist, singular and easily recognizable. The fine quality of this work is exemplary.

The painting comes with a COA letter and an artist biograph issued by Yanda Aboriginal Art and a presentation album with 100 photos that documented the entire process of the creation of this large work of art. Richard Hirsch Encaustic Painting of Nothing #28, 2012

Contemporary American ceramic artist Richard Hirsch's encaustic Painting of Nothing #28 is made of ceramic raw materials, dry pigment and wax. This piece is part of his ongoing Painting of Nothing Series. Hirsch applies the waxy mix with a brush onto redwood plywood backed structures with two-inch wood strips all around and used various torches to layer, flux, bubble and blend. "Waxy and very tactile, they are probably the work Mark Rothko would have done had he spent most of his life in clay. Hirsch’s paintings have the nuance, subtle texture, and color shifts that become evident in blown-up photographs of his ceramic objects as well as a similar presence." Signed and dated en verso by the artist. This painting ship directly from the artist’s studio in Rochester, NY.

Richard Hirsch brief bio:
In the field of contemporary ceramic, Rick Hirsch has earned an international reputation. He has achieved this recognition by engaging in numerous diversified professional activities. Through efforts in university teaching, exhibits, writing, lecturing and researching he has risen to worldwide prominence.
In 1975, Hirsch co-authored a book entitled Raku, published by Watson-Guptill. This was the first comprehensive text to address the new innovations developing in the west that were transforming traditional Japanese Raku. Also, in the same year, Hirsch became a founding faculty member of The Program in Artistry at Boston University. Currently, Hirsch is a Professor Emeritus at The School for American Crafts which is a part of Rochester Institute of Technology in Rochester, NY. His university teaching career now spans well over four decades.
Repeatedly, Hirsch has participated in several milestone exhibitions and publications. Significant shows include; The Evolution of American Art in Craft Media Since 1945; Echoes: Historical References in Contemporary Ceramics; American Ceramics Now; Raku: Origins, Impact and Contemporary Expression; and Convergences: The Presence of the Past in Contemporary American Ceramics...
