Traditional Headwear from Italy: Turin, Rome, Subiaco and More – 1823 Print
Located in Langweer, NL
Traditional Headwear from Italy: Turin, Rome, Subiaco and More – 1823 Print This hand-colored lithograph, marked “No. 3,” is the third plate from a striking early 19th-century series documenting traditional European costume, particularly regional headwear. Published in London on December 1, 1823, by Baldwin, Cradock & Joy, this print showcases six distinct styles worn by women across Italy, offering a comparative glimpse into local identity, ceremonial dress, and religious symbolism. At the center top is a dramatic blue hooded garment labeled “Penitent.” Worn with the face obscured, this penitential garment features a small red cross emblem, likely representing affiliation with a religious brotherhood or spiritual order. It stands out starkly from the other portraits and introduces a solemn, sacred tone. To its left, a view from behind shows a woman from “Settimo” wearing a stylized crown of hairpins radiating like a sunburst, secured by a horizontal golden bar. Below her elaborately embroidered collar, a red ribbon is neatly tied. To the right, a woman from “Turin” wears an exquisite bonnet of pleated white lace, creating a fan-like halo above her head. Her large gold cross...

Original Engraving of Rotterdam Island, Nowadays Nomuka, Kingdom of Tonga, c1800
Located in Langweer, NL
Antique print titled 'Gezigt op het eiland Rotterdam'. View of Rotterdam Island, Pacific. Originates from 'Reizen Rondom de Waereld door James Cook (..)'. Rotterdam or nowadays Nomuka is a small island in the southern part of the Ha?apai group of islands in the Kingdom of Tonga. It is part of the Nomuka Group of islands, also called the ?Otu Mu?omu?a. Nomuka, is 7 square kilometres in area and contains a large, brackish lake (Ano Lahi) in the middle, and also three other smaller lakes—Ano Ha'amea, Ano Fungalei, and Molou. There are approximately 400-500 inhabitants who subsist on fishing, farming, and remittances from family members abroad. The island has a secondary school, two primary schools, and a kindergarten. It also has seven churches. The island is accessible by boat only. Boats leave weekly from Nuku?alofa and Lifuka, Ha?apai. There is one guesthouse on the island, and three or four small fale koloa, or convenience stores. It is also home to the Royal Nomuka Yacht Club Notable historic visitors include Abel Tasman, Captain Cook, Captain Bligh, and William Mariner. The Dutch Abel Tasman made the first European discovery of the island on 24 January 1643. A party went ashore to get water, and the description of the huge lake they brought back afterwards leaves little doubt about the identification. Tasman called it Rotterdam island, after the city of Rotterdam, a major port in the Netherlands, and noted in his maps the indigenous name of Amamocka, a misspelling of ?a Nomuka, ?a being a subject-indicating article. We also find the name of Amorkakij for Nomuka iki.[1] Captain Bligh in the Bounty spent 3 days wooding and watering at Nomuka in April 1789. The Mutiny on the Bounty occurred the day after they left. Nomuka is known for raising up the greatest number of church leaders for the major Christian denominations in Tonga such as Rev. Sione Lepa To'a the former president of the Free Wesleyan Church of Tonga, Rev. Seluipepeli Mafi and his son Rev Dr Feke Mafi as both former presidents of the Church of Tonga, and Pastor Tetileti Pahulu, a former president of the Seventh Day Adventist...

Funeral Procession in Rome with Hooded Figures and Clergy, London 1820
Located in Langweer, NL
Funeral Procession in Rome with Hooded Figures and Clergy, London 1820 This remarkable hand-colored print, titled “A Funeral Procession in Rome,” offers an evocative portrayal of a traditional Roman Catholic funeral rite in early 19th-century Italy. Drawn by the artist K. Brodtmann in 1820 and published by William Sams in London, this lithograph provides a vivid, carefully staged glimpse into a deeply ceremonial aspect of Roman religious life. At the center of the composition is the coffin, ornately draped and carried on a litter adorned with tall white candles. Hooded penitents in long white robes, known as *confratelli*, process solemnly in front of and behind the bier. These members of religious brotherhoods, identifiable by their distinctive pointed hoods and blue cord sashes, traditionally took part in such rituals of public devotion and mourning. Behind them follows a group of clergy in white surplices and black cassocks. One priest stands out in an elaborate gold-embroidered chasuble, emphasizing his seniority or special role in the rite. To the right, more acolytes and a hooded standard-bearer carrying a religious banner complete the scene. At the far left, a layman hefts a large wooden cross...

Hunting and Gathering Across Continents in a Collage of Five Engravings, 1813
Located in Langweer, NL
Lot of 5 col. aquatints, by Mathew DUBOURG after various artists. These original antique prints were drawn (designated by "Del.", short for delineavit, Latin for "he/she drew it") by J.H. Clark and were published and sold on May 1st, 1813. Edw. Orme Bend Street London" refers to Edward Orme, a publisher based on Bond Street in London, known for producing and selling high-quality prints during the early 19th century. The term "Sculp", short for "sculpsit," indicates the engraver, in this case, M. Dubourg, who would have been responsible for engraving the images onto a surface for printing. These details highlight that the prints are of English origin and were produced by notable figures in the London art scene at the time. Edward Orme's establishment was a significant purveyor of prints, and such detailed works would have been collected by those with an interest in art, culture, and the wider world. This date places the prints in the early 19th century, a period rich in exploration and documentation of various cultures around the world through art. These prints would have served as a way for people to see and learn about activities and practices from different parts of the world that they might never have the chance to witness in person. The detailed and colored nature of the prints suggests that they were likely intended for an audience with an interest in the exotic and the educational. Description: This collection of five prints offers a vivid tableau of hunting and gathering practices from various corners of the globe during the 18th and 19th centuries. Each print captures a moment of interaction between humans and nature, showcasing the diverse methods and environments in which these activities took place. 1. "Finland Bear Hunting...

Traditional Headdresses from Italy and France: Florence, Ostia, Castà – 1823
Located in Langweer, NL
Traditional Headdresses from Italy and France: Florence, Ostia, Castà – 1823 This hand-colored lithograph, marked “No. 5,” is the fifth plate in a captivating 1823 series published in London by Baldwin, Cradock & Joy, illustrating traditional headdresses from across Europe. With a focus on Italian regional fashion, but also including a figure from Languedoc (France), the print showcases the diversity and creativity of 19th-century women's headwear in both ceremonial and everyday contexts. At upper left, a woman from Montefiascone wears a simple yet elegant white veil draped loosely over her hair and shoulders. Her scarlet sleeve ribbons and golden earring add a dash of vibrancy to an otherwise modest ensemble. In contrast, the central figure from Lariana dons one of the most dramatic headpieces on the sheet: a large, bright yellow hat embellished with blue ribbon and multiple ornamental loops. Her necklace with a red cross pendant suggests a religious or festival connection. To the upper right, the figure from Languedoc is rendered in profile wearing a striking purple bonnet with vertical ridges, trimmed with white lace, and set against a yellow collar. This French addition provides an interesting cross-cultural comparison within a primarily Italian series. The bottom row continues with a woman from Florence, shown from behind with her dark hair intricately braided and adorned with a long pink and white ribbon that drapes down her back—an emblem of grace and femininity. The central bottom figure from Ostia wears a wide-brimmed felt hat...

Captain Cook s Encampment in Australia where The Endeavour was Beached, 1803
Located in Langweer, NL
Antique print Australia titled 'Gezigt van de Rivier Endeavour op de Kust van Nieuw-Holland'. View of an encampent on the shore of the Endeavour river on the coast of Australia where the Endeavour boat was beached. Originates from 'Reizen Rondom de Waereld door James Cook (..)'. HMS Endeavour was a British Royal Navy research vessel that Lieutenant James Cook commanded to Australia and New Zealand on his first voyage of discovery from 1768 to 1771. She was launched in 1764 as the collier Earl of Pembroke, with the Navy purchasing her in 1768 for a scientific mission to the Pacific Ocean and to explore the seas for the surmised Terra Australis Incognita or "unknown southern land". Commissioned as His Majesty's Bark Endeavour, she departed Plymouth in August 1768, rounded Cape Horn and reached Tahiti in time to observe the 1769 transit of Venus across the Sun. She then set sail into the largely uncharted ocean to the south, stopping at the islands of Huahine, Bora Bora, and Raiatea west of Tahiti to allow Cook to claim them for Great Britain. In September 1769, she anchored off New Zealand, becoming the first European vessel to reach the islands since Abel Tasman's Heemskerck 127 years earlier. In April 1770, Endeavour became the first European ship to reach the east coast of Australia, with Cook going ashore at what is now known as Botany Bay. Endeavour then sailed north along the Australian coast. She narrowly avoided disaster after running aground on the Great Barrier Reef, and Cook had to throw her guns overboard to lighten her. Endeavour was beached on the Australian mainland for seven weeks to permit rudimentary repairs to her hull. Resuming her voyage, she limped into port in Batavia in October 1770, her crew sworn to secrecy about the lands that they had visited. From Batavia Endeavour continued westward, rounded the Cape of Good Hope on 13 March 1771 and reached the English port of Dover on 12 July, having been at sea for nearly three years. The ship was largely forgotten after her Pacific voyage, spending the next three years hauling troops and cargo to and from the Falkland Islands. She was renamed in 1775 after being sold into private hands, and used to transport timber from the Baltic. Rehired as a British troop transport during the American War of Independence, she was finally scuttled in a blockade of Narragansett Bay, Rhode Island in 1778. Historical evidence indicates the ship was sunk just north of Goat Island in Newport Harbor, along with four other British transports. Relics from Endeavour are displayed at maritime museums worldwide, including an anchor and six of her cannon. A replica of Endeavour was launched in 1994 and is berthed alongside the Australian National Maritime Museum in Sydney Harbour. The NASA Space Shuttle...
