Mid-Century Modern Posters

MID-CENTURY MODERN STYLE

Organically shaped, clean-lined and elegantly simple are three terms that well describe vintage mid-century modern furniture. The style, which emerged primarily in the years following World War II, is characterized by pieces that were conceived and made in an energetic, optimistic spirit by creators who believed that good design was an essential part of good living.

VINTAGE MID-CENTURY MODERN FURNITURE ON 1STDIBS

The mid-century modern era saw leagues of postwar American architects and designers animated by new ideas and new technology. The lean, functionalist International-style architecture of Le Corbusier and Bauhaus eminences Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and Walter Gropius had been promoted in the United States during the 1930s by Philip Johnson and others. New building techniques, such as “post-and-beam” construction, allowed the International-style schemes to be realized on a small scale in open-plan houses with long walls of glass.

Materials developed for wartime use became available for domestic goods and were incorporated into mid-century modern furniture designs. Charles and Ray Eames and Eero Saarinen, who had experimented extensively with molded plywood, eagerly embraced fiberglass for pieces such as the La Chaise and the Womb chair, respectively.

Architect, writer and designer George Nelson created with his team shades for the Bubble lamp using a new translucent polymer skin and, as design director at Herman Miller, recruited the Eameses, Alexander Girard and others for projects at the legendary Michigan furniture manufacturer

Harry Bertoia and Isamu Noguchi devised chairs and tables built of wire mesh and wire struts. Materials were repurposed too: The Danish-born designer Jens Risom created a line of chairs using surplus parachute straps for webbed seats and backrests.

The Risom lounge chair was among the first pieces of furniture commissioned and produced by celebrated manufacturer Knoll, a chief influencer in the rise of modern design in the United States, thanks to the work of Florence Knoll, the pioneering architect and designer who made the firm a leader in its field. The seating that Knoll created for office spaces — as well as pieces designed by Florence initially for commercial clients — soon became desirable for the home.

As the demand for casual, uncluttered furnishings grew, more mid-century furniture designers caught the spirit.

Classically oriented creators such as Edward Wormley, house designer for Dunbar Inc., offered such pieces as the sinuous Listen to Me chaise; the British expatriate T.H. Robsjohn-Gibbings switched gears, creating items such as the tiered, biomorphic Mesa table. There were Young Turks such as Paul McCobb, who designed holistic groups of sleek, blond wood furniture, and Milo Baughman, who espoused a West Coast aesthetic in minimalist teak dining tables and lushly upholstered chairs and sofas with angular steel frames.

Generations turn over, and mid-century modern remains arguably the most popular style going. As the collection of vintage mid-century modern chairs, dressers, coffee tables and other furniture for the living room, dining room, bedroom and elsewhere on 1stDibs demonstrates, this period saw one of the most delightful and dramatic flowerings of creativity in design history.

French Poster Signed by Jean Messagier, 1975 depicting Bronze Sculptures
By Jean Messagier
Located in Miami, FL
Original, midcentury poster dated 1975 from Gallerie Lovreglio in Nice, France. Signed by the artist Jean Messagier (1920-1999), multi-faceted artist. Measures: 17" W × 1" D × 24" H "Like the meanders of the Doubs so dear to Jean Messagier, the furrows that the artists on the paths of art history are sometimes complex and tortuous. Messagier, famous since the 1950s, exhibited all over the world, a friend of painters, rockstars and poets, began the 1980s with a retrospective exhibition at the Grand Palace (Paris) which then marks, paradoxically, the beginning of a certain forgetfulness. The reasons are many times that today the work of this immense artist is partly forgotten, in all unknown cases, and is probably the object of a misunderstanding. Messagier, abstract? Arise then these images of colorful tracery, this so-called "tile washer" painting, which was, he, is true, that of her first successes and her consecration, but which is only one of facets of a gigantic and protean work that has endlessly put itself in danger and to reinvent herself. The object of the retrospective imagined at the Musée de Dole in 2019 is clearly to show that Messagier was working beyond the issues of figuration and of abstraction, in an urgency to paint, to draw, to create, which has as principal obsession to respond to the cruel creativity of nature. Messagier, springtime specialist, ecologist almost before the hour, experimenter of frost painting winter, poet of the sap and pollen, draws his breath in that, vital, libidinal of nature. It's the same energy that pushed him to touch everything, with a freedom and a lack of interest manifest for opinion or criticism. It does not matter if we say crazy - on the contrary - Messagier the almost American abstract painter never finished with the figure or the figuration and allowed herself as early as the 1970s to both summon images from the popular culture like Goldorak, the Marsupilami, Betty Boop, glamorous figures like Lady Di or Greta Garbo, to jostle her masters by quoting Delacroix, Matisse, Picasso ... with total irreverence. These years 1970-1980, where will face jovial triviality, fried eggs, radishes, a thousand giant leafs...

One Flew Over the Cuckoo s Nest Original Vintage Movie Poster, Czech, 1978
Located in Devon, GB
A fantastically bizarre poster by Jan Weber for the first Czech release of "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest." Although Western films were shown during the Soviet era in the Communist Bloc, American publicity materials were banned, allowing the state-commissioned artists to operate with total creative freedom from the demands of the big Hollywood studios, offering quirky and sometimes surreal interpretations which often had little reference to the film. Weber's intense halftone design featuring a triplicate of manic Jack Nicholson faces is presumably a nod to insanity and multiple personality disorders. Based on the 1962 novel of the same name by Ken Kesey...

Roger Chapelet, Original Vintage Boating Poster, Paris Boat Yacht Show, 1950
Located in SAINT-OUEN-SUR-SEINE, FR
Original Vintage boating poster for the Paris boat show dating from 1950 by Roger Chapelet. Roger Chapelet - September 25th 1931 - June 30th 1995) was a French marine painter and poster artist. Roger Chapelet’s career as a maritime painter began when he boarded the Rollon in 1927 and painted a series of paintings of different European ports: Le Havre, Antwerp, Rotterdam. Later he embarked on sailboats and painted the fishing campaigns off the banks of Newfoundland and Greenland. In the 1930s, he became the poster artist for the main French maritime companies and in 1936 was appointed Peintre de la Marine (Official Painter to the Navy) and was a member of the Académie de Marine (see below). The ocean liner companies included: Compagnie de Navigation Mixte, Paquet, Compagnie Générale Transatlantique, and Fraissinet. Along with Marin-Marie and Albert Brenet, Roger Chapelet is considered one of the three great French marine painters of the 20th century. An exhibition was dedicated to him at the National Maritime Museum from October 8, 1993 to December 5, 1994. Académie de Marine The title of Official Painter to the Navy (POM) is granted by the French Minister of Defense to artists who have devoted their talent to the sea, to the National Navy and to seafarers. It can be awarded not only to painters but also to photographers, filmmakers, illustrators, engravers, and sculptors. The Academy of Marine Painters exists since 1830 and it’s members can put an anchor after their signature. Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs Original Vintage Movie Poster, French, 1951
Located in Devon, GB
With a retelling of a German fairytale by the Brothers Grimm, Walt Disney introduced a sceptical America to his first full-length cel animated feature film in 1937. Hailed as a landmark work of art, 'Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs' was a smash hit, paving the way for further Disney features including 'Pinocchio' (1940), 'Dumbo' (1941) and 'Bambi' (1942), and changing the course of movie history. Disney was awarded an honorary Oscar at the 11th Academy Awards for a significant screen innovation which has charmed millions and pioneered a great new entertainment field. Adjusted for inflation, 'Snow White' remains one of the top ten highest grossing films of all time. The popularity of the film has led to its being re-released theatrically many times. Following the film's first French release in 1938 it was shown almost continuously until American films were banned during the Nazi occupation in 1942. Post-liberation, 'Blanche Neige et les sept...

Elvis Girls! Girls! Girls! Original Vintage Japanese B2 Movie Poster, 1963
Located in Devon, GB
Following the tried and tested golden formula of light-hearted musical entertainment, exotic location and girls galore which saw Elvis' soundtrack albums far outstrip his regular album sales, 'Girls! Girls! Girls!' stands out as one of Elvis Presley's more popular films, even receiving a Golden Globe nomination for Best Motion Picture - Musical. Elvis' eleventh feature film and his second shot in Hawaii, 'Girls! Girls! Girls!' was a safe money-spinner for both his record label RCA and the film's distributor Paramount, who saw Elvis voted as 1962's 'Top Box Office Draw' for having three of the top grossing films of that year. The highlight of the film is Presley's performance of his enduring pop classic 'Return to Sender,' which subsequently peaked at no.2 on the US Billboard chart when released as the lead single from the soundtrack album. Seen in sublime profile, Elvis is every inch the handsome heartthrob as the penniless fishing boat pilot on this ultra rare B2 poster for the original Japanese release. Completing one of the best poster designs we have seen for this picture, a bevy of bikini-clad beauties feature at the foot of the photomontage, with Elvis as the carefree sailor sandwiched between his two love interests, played by Stella Stevens...

Thunderbirds Are Go Original Vintage Australian Daybill Movie Poster, 1966
Located in Devon, GB
Printed in stunning stone lithography, this explosive Australian Daybill poster advertised the first full length feature film based on the British sci-fi Supermarionation television series 'Thunderbirds.' Created by Gerry and Sylvia Anderson, 'Thunderbirds' combined a form of electronic marionette puppetry, which they named "Supermarionation," with scale model special effects sequences. Set in the 2060s, 'Thunderbirds' followed on from the Anderson's earlier Supermarionation productions including 'Fireball XL5' and 'Stingray.' The series followed the exploits of International Rescue, a life-saving organisation equipped with technologically-advanced land, sea, air and space rescue craft headed by a fleet of five vehicles named the Thunderbirds and launched from the organisation's secret base of operations in the Pacific Ocean. Steve McQueen The Blob Original Vintage Japanese B2 Movie Poster, 1965
Located in Devon, GB
A young Steve McQueen is pitched as the main event on this incredibly rare B2 poster for the first Japanese release of the cult drive-in era classic ‘The Blob’ in 1965, cashing in on the king of cool’s box office draw at the height of his popularity. A relative unknown only seven years prior, McQueen had not been pictured on anything but the theatrical lobby cards at the time of the original US release in 1958 and was credited as ‘Steven McQueen.’ Perfectly epitomising the schlock sci-fi B movie, ‘The Blob’ starred a 28-year old McQueen in his first leading role as a rebel teen who discovers the gelatinous alien invader wreaking havoc throughout his small Pennsylvania community and tries to warn the sceptical townspeople before it is too late. Distributed by Paramount as the B movie to ‘I Married a Monster...
