Junichiro Sekino Signed Japanese Woodblock Print Boy and His Dog
By Junichiro Sekino
Located in Studio City, CA
A relatively large, very appealing and enduring image of youth and friendship exemplified by a boy and his dog by master Japanese artist or printer Junichiro Sekino. The print is stamped with the artist's seal and signed in pencil by the artist and may also be numbered and dated as well, as most of his works are, but if so, it is hidden under the mat.
Junichiro Sekino was largely considered, along with Kiyoshi Saito, to be one of Japan's paramount 20th-century master print artists. Both were prominent leaders of the Sosaku Hanga movement. Sekino's works can be found in many museums including:
The Museum of Modern Art, N. Y., the Art Institute Chicago...

Chikanobu Triptych – Shogun Returns from the Hunt in Koganehara, c.1897
Located in Langweer, NL
Chikanobu Triptych – Shogun Returns from the Hunt in Koganehara, c.1897
This powerful and dynamic triptych by Toyohara Chikanobu (1838–1912) depicts the Shogun and his retinue returning from a falconry hunt across the vast grasslands of Koganehara. The print is part of the celebrated Meiji-era series Chiyoda no Omote (Outer Palace of Chiyoda), which portrayed ceremonial and military scenes from the life of the Tokugawa shogunate. This series blends historical reverence with a modern Meiji sensibility, celebrating Japan’s warrior heritage at a time of rapid transformation.
Rendered in rich color and vivid linework, the triptych shows a noble procession in motion: the mounted Shogun at center turns back toward the viewer, while falconers and warriors in elaborate dress surround him. Attendants carry game and falconry equipment, and a dense forest line marks the horizon behind them. The sweeping composition emphasizes both movement and status, with the central figure visually dominant and placed against a pale, open sky.
The triptych is signed by Chikanobu with the toshidama cartouche and published by Fukuda Hatsujirō around 1897. Chikanobu, one of the last great ukiyo-e masters, was celebrated for his ability to capture imperial ceremony, samurai culture, and the feminine elegance of the court — often in triptych format for dramatic impact.
While the work shows some age-related signs, it retains strong visual appeal and is a compelling historical document of samurai-era tradition as imagined through Meiji eyes.
Condition report: Good overall condition considering age. The three sheets are mounted together on old Japanese paper backing (verso), which is loosening slightly along the joins. Light overall toning and minor wrinkling across the panels. Colors remain well preserved with strong impression and no major losses or tears. Margins present, minor handling wear visible. A stable and attractive display piece.
Framing tips: We recommend float mounting the full triptych in a custom horizontal frame, allowing the slight backing and joins to remain visible as part of its historical charm. Use a dark walnut or black lacquer frame with an off-white or light beige acid-free mat. Proper archival mounting can help preserve the integrity of the backing while enhancing its display quality.
Technique: Woodblock print (ōban triptych)
Maker: Toyohara Chikanobu, Japan, c.1897
Publisher: Fukuda Hatsujirō
Keywords:
Chikanobu triptych, samurai falconry print, Japanese woodblock print, Meiji print, Chiyoda no Omote, shogun artwork, Koganehara, antique Japanese triptych...

Shanghai Deco Nanyang Brothers Tobacco Poster, c. 1930
Located in Chicago, IL
This framed advertising poster for Nanyang Brothers Tobacco dates to the 1920-30s and melds the meticulous detail of traditional Chinese painting with the nuanced color and fine resolution of color lithography. Known as yuefenpai, or calendar posters, these advertisements depicted fashionable women and intriguing scenery alongside annual calendars and product placements. Evolved from traditional nianhua paintings (New Year pictures), these advertising posters were strongly influenced by the Art Deco movement in the west and recall the economic boom of early 20th century Shanghai, an international center of business and trade.
In this example, a young woman dressed in fine clothing and jewelry strolls through a traditional courtyard garden, surrounded by stone statues and towering pagodas. In the lower left corner is an open pack of Golden Dragon Cigarettes and below an array of cigarette brands, each a product of Nanyang Brothers Tobacco. The scene is surrounded by trailing vine scrollwork and text suggesting the poster may have been given as a corporate gift...

A wonderfully composed woodblock print by famed Japanese printmaker Kiyoshi Saito. Many consider Saito to be one of the most important, if not the most important, contemporary Japanese printmakers of the 20th century. This print is of a temple guardian of Tofuku-Ji which is one of the Kyoto Gozan or Five Great Zen Temples in Kyoto
The print is signed and stamped, titled (Tofuku-Ji, Kyoto (A), dated (1961), and numbered (12/200) by the artist.
Would be a great addition to any modern Japanese print...
