Symbol of Memories 2
Located in Ibadan, Oyo
Symbol of Memories 1 is an original painting by Oladimeji Alabi. Oladimeji created the Symbol of Memories with Mixed Media on a 30W by 50H inches primed canvas. The symbol of Memories is inspired by the story of my childhood. The objects and signs we grew up with as a child in our homes become symbols of our memories today. Art has the ability to evoke strong emotions and convey meaningful messages. One such artwork that does just that is "Symbol of Memories," a stunning piece that uses the mother as a symbol of life and hope. This artwork is made even more significant by the use of damask fabric, which was popular among Nigerian women in the late 70s to 90s and used for making gele, the head ties worn by women. The artwork speaks volumes about the importance of mothers in society. The mother is dressed in a vibrant damask fabric, which adds a sense of richness and texture to the painting. The use of damask fabric in the painting is significant as it represents a part of Nigerian culture and history. Damask was a popular fashion among Nigerian women in the late 70s to 90s and was used to make gele, the head ties worn by women on special occasions. The fabric is often associated with elegance, sophistication, and beauty, which adds a layer of meaning to the artwork. The mother in the painting is the focal point of the artwork, symbolizing the importance of mothers in society. Mothers are the backbone of families, providing love, support, and guidance to their children. They are often the ones who hold families together through difficult times, serving as a symbol of hope and resilience. The use of the damask fabric in the painting also represents the concept of memories. The fabric has a rich history in Nigerian culture, and for many people, it is a symbol of their childhood and the memories they hold dear. The painting serves as a reminder of the importance of preserving memories, both good and bad, and how they shape our lives. Overall, "Symbol of Memories" is a beautiful piece of art that celebrates the role of mothers in society. The use of damask fabric adds a layer of meaning to the painting, representing the importance of preserving memories and the rich culture of Nigeria. The mother as a focused subject symbolizes life and hope, the fabric applied in this art is called damask, which was a popular fashion among Nigerian women around the late 70s to 90s used for making gele(the head ties). To lead a happy, fulfilled life there is two simultaneous truth that is critical for us to remember. The first is that we are gods. Vastly powerful gods invent their lives in this scented carousel of dreams and intense wonders. The second is that we are nothing. Bellow all significance, a speck within a speck of dust, alive for a spark of time, winking out and gone. When we forget either one of these perspectives, we are lost. Omowumi
Located in Ibadan, Oyo
The title "Omowumi" itself exudes a sense of elegance and mystery, drawing us into the realm of enchantment where the magical moments of life reside. The woman depicted in the painting stands as the embodiment of grace and serenity, radiating an aura of tranquility that mirrors the beauty of the flowers she holds. Her choice of attire, a flowing white armless gown, symbolizes purity and serves as a canvas for the vibrant colors of the bouquet to come alive. The bouquet of flowers cradled in the woman's hands serves as the focal point of the artwork, and rightly so. Flowers, with their ephemeral beauty and fragrance, have long been a symbol of life's fleeting nature and the beauty that resides in transience. They remind us that life is a delicate dance, and every moment should be treasured and savored. "Omowumi" captures the essence of reminiscing about beautiful times spent with flowers in hand...

Ilori 2 (Heavy)
Located in Ibadan, Oyo
The title itself, "ÌLÒRÍ," holds a special meaning, as the artist reveals it is a name given to a child who finds its way into their mother's belly while she is still breastfeeding another child. This unique and touching term encapsulates the interconnectedness of life, illustrating how love and new beginnings can emerge even in the midst of existing responsibilities. Adebayo's artwork appears to be a reflection on her personal journey and the story of her birth. She shares how her mother affectionately calls her "ÌLÒRÍ" and playfully recounts the amusing moments when she questions her conception. The artist playfully suggests that she jokingly implores her mother to use protection, a humorous remark that adds a light-hearted touch to the piece. The openness and candor with which Adebayo communicates her personal story add authenticity and vulnerability to the artwork, drawing viewers into her emotional world. The central theme of the artwork revolves around family, particularly the artist's late brother who was just nine months old at the time of her conception. Through her words, "I Miss you bro and happy mother's month. Your struggle is noticed," Adebayo honors her sibling's memory and acknowledges the sacrifices her mother made as a parent. The metaphorical use of the phrase "coconut head" suggests a sense of stubbornness, perhaps referring to the artist's own determination to enter this world despite the odds. This resilient spirit symbolizes the strength of the human will and the innate desire to live, even against all odds. It is a testament to the power of life and the profound connection between siblings, even those who have never met. "ÌLÒRÍ" is more than just a visual artwork; it is a story of life, love, and the unbreakable ties that bind families together. Janet Adebayo...

Adventure Story 1
Located in Ibadan, Oyo
"Adventure Story" is a homage to the rich cultural traditions passed down through generations. The artwork's protagonist, a male hunter, stands as a representation of the deep-rooted connection between man and nature, as well as the preservation of traditional practices. The wooden local gun he carries symbolizes both the tools of his trade and the ancestral knowledge that has been handed down through time. Bello's artwork prompts us to appreciate the importance of preserving and honoring our cultural heritage. It serves as a reminder that our traditions, rituals, and stories hold invaluable wisdom and provide a link to our past, helping us understand who we are as individuals and as a collective. The central theme of "Adventure Story" revolves around the spirit of adventure, encapsulated by the hunter in the artwork. The headlamp tied around his head signifies his readiness to explore the unknown and face the challenges that lie ahead. It speaks of the courage to navigate unfamiliar territories and the determination to embrace new experiences. The headlamp, traditionally used to illuminate darkness, can also be interpreted metaphorically as a beacon of knowledge and enlightenment. It symbolizes the hunter's quest for wisdom and understanding, highlighting the importance of seeking knowledge as we venture into the uncharted territories of life. Olamilekan Bello...

Blue Towel 1
Located in Ibadan, Oyo
"Blue Towel" is an artistic composition that demands our attention. The woman wrapped in the titular blue towel stands as a metaphor for the delicate nature of the human condition. The choice of a towel, an item commonly associated with comfort, adds a layer of paradox, suggesting that beneath the surface, vulnerability and uncertainty may reside. The color blue further amplifies the artwork's emotive power. Blue, often associated with tranquility, introspection, and depth, offers a subtle insight into the subject's state of mind. It prompts us to consider the significance of self-reflection and the search for personal meaning that lies beneath the facade we present to the world. Bello's "Blue Towel" invites viewers to delve into the multifaceted nature of vulnerability and identity. The woman's posture and gaze suggest introspection as if she is immersed in deep thought, grappling with the layers that make up her sense of self. The vulnerability expressed in her body language encourages us to reflect on our own journeys of self-discovery and the masks we wear to shield our vulnerabilities from the world. The blue towel enveloping the lady can also be interpreted as a symbolic cocoon, representing a transformative stage in her life. It alludes to the moments of introspection and self-exploration that are essential for personal growth and understanding. Just as a caterpillar retreats into a cocoon before emerging as a butterfly, the woman in the artwork may be undergoing her own metamorphosis. Olamilekan Bello...

Idia
Located in Ibadan, Oyo
Idia (Iyoba) was the mother of Esigie, the Oba of Benin who ruled from 1504 to 1550. She played a significant role in the rise and reign of her son, being described as a great warrior who fought relentlessly before and during her son's reign as the Oba (king) of the Edo people. Queen Idia was instrumental in securing the title of Oba for her son Esigie following the death of his father Oba Ozolua. To that end, she raised an army to fight off his brother Arhuaran who was supposed to be the Oba by right and tradition but was subsequently defeated in battle. Esigie’s mother became the 17th Oba of Benin. Esigie instituted the title of iyoba (queen mother) and conferred it on his mother, along with Eguae-Iyoba (Palace of the Queen Mother). —Wikipedia She's the epitome of courage, vision, strength, and vigor. In this Becoming series, I hope to revive our heritage as well as examine the intricacies of self-actualization, vis-a-vis drawing inspiration from the African history from the Benin and Esan perspective, contemporarily. My Lady
Located in Ibadan, Oyo
"My Lady" is a testament to the artist's admiration for the beauty that women possess in their unique forms. Oyindamola skillfully captures the essence of femininity through the lady's enchanting smile, which radiates joy and confidence. This portrayal challenges society's narrow definitions of beauty, reminding us that every woman, regardless of societal standards, possesses an innate beauty that should be recognized and celebrated.
