Idia (Iyoba) was the mother of Esigie, the Oba of Benin who ruled from 1504 to 1550. She played a significant role in the rise and reign of her son, being described as a great warrior who fought relentlessly before and during her son's reign as the Oba (king) of the Edo people. Queen Idia was instrumental in securing the title of Oba for her son Esigie following the death of his father Oba Ozolua. To that end, she raised an army to fight off his brother Arhuaran who was supposed to be the Oba by right and tradition but was subsequently defeated in battle. Esigie’s mother became the 17th Oba of Benin.
Esigie instituted the title of iyoba (queen mother) and conferred it on his mother, along with Eguae-Iyoba (Palace of the Queen Mother). —Wikipedia

About Artist
Emmanuel Ojebola was born in southwest Nigeria Eruwa Oyo state in the late 90s. He had his secondary education in the Baptist model High school Sango Eruwa where he developed his interest in the art using the course of his junior secondary school education.

Emotan (real name Uwarraye) was a 15th-century market woman who plied her trade at the Oba Market in the ancient kingdom of Benin during the reign of Oba Uwaifiokun and Oba Ewuare the Great. She was known for her humanitarian work, love for children, and most importantly the key role she played during the period of Prince Ogun’s (Oba Ewuare I) succession travails following his time in exile.
Although Emotan had no biological children of her own, Emotan loved and took care of many children in her foster home. Some parents would send their children to live with Emotan and learn some trades from her for a period of time. About Artist
Macaulay Barnabas Osagie is a self-taught Artist and a graduate of the prestigious University of Benin, Nigeria, West Africa. Hailed from Benin heritage, which is known for its rich history, culture, and traditions. Growing up, He was fascinated by esthetics as a form of expression; this propelled his journey into the world of art. His passion for art began at the age of five, scribbling images on the ground using sticks—it evolved into drawings in primary and secondary schools. He was often selected among students to represent my secondary school in various art competitions.
"Knowing that Art fuels my existence and helps me connect with the world better, in 2018, I decided to not only do art for love and relief, but to explore it professionally, and build a renowned career in the industry. One that reflects my views on societal issues and serves as an echo of hope. Determined to pay my dues, I had the privilege of working at Prince Saheed Adelakun's Olokun Art Studio in Abule-Egba, Lagos. It was there I met with other professionals. About Artist
Roseleen Labazacchy, a true Nigerian born in the year 2000 and based in Ibadan, Oyo state Nigeria. Roseleen holds a National Certificate of Education in Fine Art from Emmanuel Alayande College of Education, Oyo State.
She is a mixed-media painter. Roseleen was exposed to art from a very young age; Her father being an artist himself enrolled her in the popular Nike Art Gallery at a very young age to learn traditional Adire making, a skill she still practices to date.
This was how she started art professionally and she has been getting better at what she does since then. In 2020, amidst the lockdown's intensity, my art journey ignited professionally. With ample time to delve deep, I explored figurative painting and abstract drawings until early 2022. I created a different series of paintings, one standout series, "Black, Bold, and Beautiful," celebrated the radiant essence of black women through six vibrant portraits clad in Ankara suits. While one found a home with a collector in Tel Aviv, the rest lingered in my studio.
Two years on, a spark ignites within me to revisit this series, infusing it with the evolved narrative that aligns and fits into the conversation my works now engage in as a Contemporary Gospeller. The notions of “Restoration and restitution” weigh heavily in my heart, reflecting on personal and global scales.
While global discourse focuses on returning stolen artefacts from Africa back to their origins, my perspective delves deeper into the restoration of lost time and purpose. My point of view on Restoration and Restitution is from this notion that man can lose years of his life in futility, and when the time of profit comes, it occurs mostly at the brink of life.
A profound scripture, "I'll restore the years that the locust has eaten," resonates deeply, offering a beacon of hope amidst perceived futility. When I read this verse, it distinctly jumped out at me. Wow! Years can be restored! There is hope!
To make this revisiting more contextual, I look out for material which can be regarded as “used-up”, “less-value”, or “wasted” - then it appears to me that Jute sack fits into this context! The Jute sack stands for the lost years of glory, having exchanged hands from one country to another before ending up in my studio to take a new life, different from what it has been used for.
