A Japanese four-case lacquer inro by a member of Kajikawa family circa 19th century (late Edo to early Meiji period). It depicts a nocturnal scenery of a meandering stream surrounded by bush clovers, where a full moon is reflected on the water. It was masterfully decorated in gold and silver maki-e using a combination of techniques including takamakie, togidashi and kirigane as well as aogai (abalone shell) inlays. The stream was set between the slightly elevated banks, adding to this piece a already strong three-dimensional composition. The interior was decorated in gold nashiji. It was signed on the bottom "Kajikawa Zou" (made by Kajikawa and a pot seal centered with "Ei" in Kanji. In one of the compartment, there is a katakana mark, appears to be a name, possibly the owner.
Kajikawa clan was one of the most famous lacquer artisanal family established in the 17th century. Many well known members over the generations produced lacquer art in a wide range of formats, but two third were signed only with the family name such as this one. It is therefore not possible to pinpoint the exact author of this piece.

A Korean lacquered wood low table with exotic elaborate inlay work circa 19th century (Joseon Dynasty). The low table, supported by slightly curved legs, was traditionally placed on the floor or bed in as a luxury item in a noble wealthy household. Like Soban, the low profile was meant to be used sitting down on the floor or matt. It is suitable to be used as a coffee table for modern time. With its rectangular form, the prototype was likely from Chinese Kang table. Lacquered in black (with time the color always turned slightly brownish due to oxidation caused by light), the table showcases elaborate inlay work with exotic materials including crushed Mother-of-Pearl, golden tortoise shell, stingray Shagreen and twisted brass wires. The iconic motif in the center is "Dragon and Phoenix Chasing Fire Pearl", an auspicious symbol often used in wedding ceremony. The eyes of the dragon and phoenix were heighted with MOP shells. The horns and beards of the dragon were made of tortoise shell. The textured scale and feature were depicted with Shagreen. The mythological animals are surrounded with clouds formed by inlayed brass wire and islands of crushed MOP. On four corners anchored a square motif each with symbol of Bagua with four trigrams. Impressively, the fine inlay work continued onto the outer border. Buddhism symbols such as fans, pair of chimes, conch, and ribbons were depicted in great details. The aprons are also decorated with brass wire scrolls and various floral motifs in shagreen.

One of the most beautiful Korean Bandajis we have had with original patina circa mid-19th century of late Joseon Dynasty. Purchased in Seoul in 1987 and still retains its original hand-written invoice (dated to 1840s). Essentially a Korean drop front half-opening chest, Bandaji was widely used in the household to store family valuables, clothes and beddings. This particular piece on offer was made in Pyongyang area in now North Korea as a wedding chest indicated by the specific auspicious symbols on the metal hardware. Constructed in pearwood, a relatively rare wood type from northern peninsular, which is rather plain and lacks grains but mellowed into a lovely yellow color, the chest was instead sumptuously decorated with nickel-copper (Paktong) plates, hinges, stripes and bosses. Covering much of the entire front of the cabinet, the metal plates were placed with eye-pleasing symmetry pattern. The top row is centered with a large square lock plate with latch and a lock (with key), flanked by a pair of pulls in the bat form (symbol of luck). On offer is a set of five Japanese textile art panels called Oshi-E circa Meiji Period (1868-1912). This unusual set of panels depict various aspects of daily life in Edo time with beautiful details. Some of these panels are snapshots of the buzzling commercial activities at the marketplace, providing insight into the signages, architecture, costumes and how people interacted within a historical and pictorial context. Other panels depict daily leisure activities such as lounging in the park or visiting friends. The realistic rendering and attention to details are not short of "photographic" quality. From the signage of the shops to the motions and attires of the individual characters, from the hairstyle, small ornaments, down to the facial expression, were all recorded in great details. Each panel was signed with the artist's name Yukihana in Kanji with a red seal.
These panels are unframed and await your custom touch (framing with inner gilt spacer and mat costs about 250-500 depending on the material chosen, see a framed example in the last picture of a single framed panel we have for sale). We offer them for sale individually, but it will be great for a collector to consider the whole set so that they can stay together.
The Oshi-E (also known as kiritori zaiku) is a type of ornamental textile art dated back to the Muromachi period (1392-1573). It started among the elite aristocratic women in Kyoto before spreading wider in the Japanese society. Throughout Edo and Meiji period, Oshi-E were sometimes used to make offerings to the altars in the temple and in the late 19th century, it was exported to the west along with the other embroidery textile art. Framed Japanese Embroidery Dragon Tapestry Meiji Period

A striking Japanese embroidery tapestry circa 1890s Meiji period presented in a gilt wood frame under glaze. The design features four dragons coiling and slithering in the clouds. The most auspicious mythological creature, dragon was a very popular motif in Japanese textile art. Viewing this particular piece, one is struck by the superb craftsmanship with the profuse use of silver threads in satin stitches and complex chain stich coiling that create the background. The slight relief technique was also used on parts of the dragon heads, rendering the piece a strong sense of dimension and motion. The textile itself measures about 32.5"x46".
Japanese Meiji textiles were widely exhibited in the west during turn of the 20th century at the international exposition. It was used to showcase the Japanese aesthetics with the techniques at their pinnacle. These expositions solidified the country's images overseas and felled the Japanese craze in the west, which turned out to be a long-lasting influence on the western art. Many pieces were purchased and stayed in the west. As there is no brocade border present, the piece is likely the main part with the central motifs of a larger tapestry and was later framed for display.

Considered a leading ink painter, Qin Feng represents China’s avant-garde movement. Invited by the German government to curate an exhibition in Germany in order to promote cultural exchange between the two countries, Qin moved to Berlin in the ’90s where he began to fuse Western modernism and the Chinese ink tradition in abstract compositions. Feng uses traditional calligraphic materials but employs his brush with the unrestrained energy of the Abstract Expressionists. Inspired by his upbringing in Xinjiang, a multicultural intersection of the silk roads, Qin has incorporated Chinese, Uighur, Arabic, and Russian language into his work. Antique Japanese Inro by Shigehide Edo Period

This exquisite four-case lacquered inro was dated to the latter part of 18th century to early 19th century (Edo period) and made by Shigehide. The opposite sides of the inro together features a lavish flower arrangement in a bamboo basket (ikebana). The detailed craftmanship was a true pleasure to behold. Mostly Takamaki-e (high relief) were used to texturize the delicate petals of the chrysanthemums, on which different shades of gold were used to create contrast. Raden (mother of pearl) shells were also used to highlight some leaves, rendering the piece an interesting balance of color and material. The interior was completed in a mottled gold finish.
