About the artist: Gail Sherman Corbett, sculptor, painter and art teacher, was the daughter of Frederick Coe and Emma Jane (Ostrander) Sherman and was born in Syracuse, New York. Her father was descended from Philip Sherman of Dedham, Essex, England, who came, in 1633 to Roxbury, Massachusetts, and afterwards, with eighteen others, founded the town of Portsmouth and the Colony of Rhode Island. He was the Second Secretary of that colony. Corbett's mother was a descendant of Michael Dyckman, one of the framers of the New Amsterdam Charter in 1623. Gail Sherman was educated at the Syracuse High School and the Anne Brown School, New York. She began her studies in sculpture at the Art Students' League in New York under Augustus Saint Gaudens, George DeForest Brush and others, and was later a student at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris. She was given her first large commission in 1901, and, between then and 1914, when her work was interrupted by the War, she executed many memorial tablets, portrait busts, bas-reliefs, sundials, fountains, and medals. Her work received a medal and mention at the Panama-Pacific Exhibition in San Francisco in 1915. Her best known groups are the Hamilton S. White Memorial, Syracuse, New York (1905), the Kirkpatrick Memorial Fountain, Syracuse (1908), and the bronze doors of the Municipal Building, Springfield, Massachusetts (1913). Miss Sherman was married at Syracuse, June 28, 1905, to Harvey Wiley Corbett, a New York architect. They had two children: Jean and John Maxwell Corbett. During 1915-1917, Mrs. Corbett gave her services to the Woman Suffrage Party, and in 1916-1917 she was Chairman of the Chelsea Branch of the Woman's Municipal League. She was a member of the National Sculpture Society, the American Numismatic Society, the Woman's Municipal League, the New York Women...

The Bay Area Figurative Movement (also known as the Bay Area Figurative School, Bay Area Figurative Art, Bay Area Figuration, and similar variations) was a mid-20th Century art movement made up of a group of artists in the San Francisco Bay Area who abandoned working in the prevailing style of Abstract Expressionism in favor of a return to figuration in painting during the 1950s and onward into the 1960s. Spanning two decades, this art movement is often broken down into three groups, or generations: the First Generation, the Bridge Generation, and the Second Generation. Many of the "First Generation" artists in this movement were avid fans of Abstract Expressionism, and worked in that manner, until several of them abandoned non-objective painting in favor of working with the figure. Among these First Generation Bay Area Figurative School artists were: David Park, Richard Diebenkorn, Rex Ashlock, Elmer Bischoff, Glenn Wessels, Wayne Thiebaud, Raimonds Staprans, and James Weeks. The "Bridge Generation" included the artists: Henrietta Berk, Nathan Oliveira, Theophilus Brown, Paul Wonner, Roland Petersen, John Hultberg, and Frank Lobdell. Pictographic scene by Charles Stewart (American, 1922-2011). There are several figures in the center of the piece, one of which has raised hands, as if to praise the sun above them. Surrounding the figures are symbols reminiscent of Neolithic art - spirals, handprints, and animal symbols. Signed "C. Stewart , T. S (for Taos Society of Artists)." in the lower left corner. Presented in a wood frame with vinyl faux-lizard skin wrapping, and a linen mat. Image size: 16.5"H x 21"W Charles C. Stewart (1922-2011) was born in Toledo, Ohio. From an early age he had a natural talent for the arts, so much so that during his school years, his teachers encouraged him to take classes at the Toledo Museum. He studied there for eight years. During World War II, he served with the tank destroyers in five campaigns. When he returned from the war, he studied art and sculpture at the Art Student's League in New York. He then went to Mexico for eight months to study and paint. While in Mexico, he fell in love with the country, its people and arts, vowing one day to return and live. In 1947, Stewart moved to Taos, New Mexico to start his career. He opened a frame shop and small studio and studied at the Taos Valley Art School under Louis Ribak. In 1949, he opened his own gallery. He taught art and sculpture at the Taos Art Association and at Philbrook Art Center in Tulsa, Oklahoma, as well as teaching private students. He built three homes in Taos, the last of which is known as the "Stewart House." The "Stewart House" was written up in the New Mexico Magazine in an article entitled "The House That Chuck Built" by Tricia Hurst In late 1984, Stewart and his wife, Mary Lou, were exploring the Baja in Mexico and ended up at "Land's End," a small fishing village on the Sea of Cortez called Cabo San Lucas...
