"The Bridge over the Seine Near Argenteuil" Oil Reproduction after Claude Monet
By (after) Claude Monet
Located in Pasadena, CA
This framed reproduction of Claude Monet's immensely popular painting, “The Bridge Over The Seine Near Argenteuil,” comes with a certificate of authenticity on the back and is numbered 1102, making it interesting for several reasons. The artagraphic process used to produce this work in a limited edition of 2900 is considered the state-of-the-art in art reproduction and the most respectful approach to reproducing a painting by a master. In three steps, this technique creates a 3D replica of an original oil painting's color and surface texture. Colors are scanned with a digital laser and then printed separately using oil-based inks on a single sheet. A mold is created from the original painting to reproduce its surface texture and bas-relief brushstrokes. Unlike lithographs and serigraphs, there is a palpable material and relief if you run your fingers over the surface. At the Impressionist group's first exhibition in 1874, Claude Monet demonstrated his deep interest in the motif by working on seven depictions of the Argenteuil bridge and four of the railroad bridge upstream. The artwork depicts Monet's immediate impressions of the scene rather than offering detailed realism. In these series, moored sailboats occupy the foreground, while the fluidity of the river melts harmoniously with the geometrically contrasted presence of the bridge and its imposing pillars. Monet manipulates his palette and complementary color schemes to create the illusion of light and movement through small, separate, and visible brushstrokes, making it one of the artist's most recognizable signatures. The painting displays a diversity of styles, with some elements more solid, having strong and distinct lines and structured forms defined by firm contours, while the water and the sky in the background give off an impression of moving space, floating, and ripples. An original painting of the series can be seen at Musée d'Orsay in Paris, France...

La Negra (The Black Woman)
By Rufino Tamayo
Located in San Francisco, CA
This artwork titled "La Negra (The Black Woman)" from the suite "The Mujeres File" 1969 is an original colors lithograph on B.F.K. Rives paper by renown Mexican artist Rufino Tamayo, 1899-1991. It is hand signed and numbered 150/150 in pencil by the artist. The image size is 26.85 x 21.25 inches, sheet size is 29.5 x 22.15 inches, framed size is 42 x 35 inches. Published by Touchtone Publisher, New York, printed by Ateliers Desjobert, Paris. Referenced and pictured in the artist's catalogue raisonne by Pereda, plate #109 page 107. Custom framed in a wooden silver frame, with silver spacer and fabric matting. It is in excellent condition. About the artist: A native of Oaxaca in Southern Mexico, Rufino Tamayo's father was a shoemaker, and his mother a seamstress. Some accounts state that he was descended from Zapotec Indians, but he was actually 'mestizo' - of mixed indigenous/European ancestry. (Santa Barbara Museum of Art). He began painting at age 11. Orphaned at the age of 12, Tamayo moved to Mexico City, where he was raised by his maternal aunt who owned a wholesale fruit business. In 1917, he entered the San Carlos Academy of Fine Arts, but left soon after to pursue independent study. Four years later, Tamayo was appointed the head designer of the department of ethnographic drawings at the National Museum of Archaeology in Mexico City. There he was surrounded by pre-Colombian objects, an aesthetic inspiration that would play a pivotal role in his life. In his own work, Tamayo integrated the forms and tones of pre-Columbian ceramics into his early still lives and portraits of Mexican men and women. In the early 1920s he also taught art classes in Mexico City's public schools. Despite his involvement in Mexican history, he did not subscribe to the idea of art as nationalistic propaganda. Modern Mexican art at that time was dominated by 'The Three Great Ones' : Diego Rivera, Jose Clemente Orozco, and David Alfaro Siqueros, but Tamayo began to be noted as someone 'new' and different' for his blending of the aesthetics of post Revolutionary Mexico with the vanguard artists of Europe and the United States. After the Mexican Revolution, he focused on creating his own identity in his work, expressing what he thought was the traditional Mexico, and refusing to follow the political trends of his contemporary artists. This caused some to see him as a 'traitor' to the political cause, and he felt it difficult to freely express himself in his art. As a result, he decided to leave Mexico in 1926 and move to New York, along with his friend, the composer Carlos Chavez. The first exhibition of Tamayo's work in the United States was held at the Weyhe Gallery, New York, in that same year. The show was successful, and Tamayo was praised for his 'authentic' status as a Mexican of 'indigenous heritage', and for his internationally appealing Modernist aesthetic. (Santa Barbara Museum of Art). Throughout the late thirties and early forties New York's Valentine Gallery gave him shows. For nine years, beginning in 1938, he taught at the Dalton School in New York. In 1929, some health problems led him to return to Mexico for treatment. While there he took a series of teaching jobs. During this period he became romantically involved with the artist Maria Izquierdo...

Young Loons, Very large original color lithograph
Located in San Francisco, CA
This artwork titled "Young Loons, 1990 is an original color lithograph by Canadian Inuit noted artist Pitaloosie Saila. 1942-2021. It is hand signed, titled, dated, located, described and numbered 34/50 in pencil by the artist. The subject size is 38.75 x 23.25 inches, sheet size is 44 x 30 inches, framed is 51.75 x 37.25 inches. Custom framed in a metal frame, with grey/blue backing. It is in excellent condition. About the artist: Pitaloosie was born in 1942 on the southwest coast of Baffin Island near what is now the community of Cape Dorset. She spent her childhood years in various hospitals in Quebec and Ontario for treatment of tuberculosis. She learnedEnglish during this time, and recalls the difficulty she experienced in relearning her native language upon her return to Baffin Island in 1957. She is now one of the few of her generation who speak both English and Inuktitut fluently. Pitaloosie began drawing in the early 1960’s, and quickly established herself as a versatile and intelligent graphic artist. Over the years, she has become a familiar presence in the Kinngait Studios, and her work has been included in annual print collections since 1968. Since the late 1960’s, Pitaloosie has made frequent trips to southern Canada to attend exhibitions and conferences. In 1967, she spent several weeks in Toronto while her husband, the well-known sculptor Pauta Saila, participated in an International Sculpture Symposium. Subsequently, she has visited Halifax, Toronto, Ottawa, Kansas City and Vermont. Her work has been featured in solo drawing exhibitions, and in 1977, Canada Post issued a stamp depicting her print, Fisherman’s Dream. Her 1985 lithograph entitled In the Hills represented the Northwest Territories in the centennial celebration of the National Parks of Canada. Amnesty International, the international human rights organization, selected a drawing by Pitaloosie entitled Mother and Child to use for their 1990 Christmas card. She was also one of nine featured artists in the acclaimed exhibition Isumavut: The Artistic Expression of Nine Cape Dorset Women, which opened at the Canadian Museum of Civilization in the fall of 1994 and continues to travel to other venues. Pitaloosie’s husband, Pauta, passed away in Cape Dorset in June of 2009 at the age of 93. In 2004, both she and Pauta were appointed members of the Royal Canadian Academy of the Arts, in recognition of their life’s work and contributions to Canadian art. Flowering Peppermint Plants: A 17th C. Besler Hand-colored Botanical Engraving
Located in Alamo, CA
This is a hand-colored copper plate engraving entitled "Pulegium Cervinum, Pseudo Pulegium Struthium, Pulegium Regium", depicting flowering Peppermint, Weld and Pennyroyal plants respectively from Basilius Besler's landmark work, Hortus Eystettensis (Garden at Eichstatt), first published in 1613 in Eichstatt, Germany near Nuremberg and later in 1640 and 1713. This beautiful colorful engraving is printed on thin laid chain-linked paper. There are subtle creases in the right upper corner, very common with Besler's relating to the drying of the paper during its production. The right margin is thinner than the others. The print is otherwise in excellent condition with striking hand-coloring. Basilius Besler (1561–1629) was an apothecary and botanist. He was curator of the Willibaldsburg Castle garden of Johann Konrad von Gemmingen, prince bishop...

The Duchess of St. Albans: A 17th C. Portrait After a Kneller Painting
By (After) Sir Godfrey Kneller
Located in Alamo, CA
This is a 17th century engraved mezzotint portrait of the Duchess of St. Albans by John Smith, after a painting by Sir Godfrey Kneller. It was published in London by John Boydell in 1694. The Duchess of St. Albans (1642-1712) was a woman named Diana de Vere. She was born in 1642, the daughter of Aubrey de Vere, the 20th Earl of Oxford. In 1662, she married Charles Beauclerk, the illegitimate son of King Charles II and his mistress, Nell Gwyn. As a result of her marriage, Diana became the Duchess of St. Albans, and she and Charles had several children together. Diana was known for her beauty and charm, and she was a prominent figure in the court of King Charles II. Despite her husband's illegitimate birth, Diana was highly respected in the royal court and was known for her intelligence and wit. She was a patron of the arts and supported many artists and writers of the time. Diana lived through a tumultuous period of English history, including the Great Fire of London and the Glorious Revolution, which saw King James II replaced by William of Orange. She died in 1712 at the age of 70 and was buried in Westminster Abbey. Descendants of Diana and her husband, who was an illegitimate son of King Charles II, include Diana, Princess of Wales and her son William, Duke of Cambridge. An author wrote of her: "The line of Vere, so long renown’d in arms, Concludes with luster in St. Albans’s charms; Her conquering eyes have made their race complete, It rose in valor, and in beauty set." This striking mezzotint engraving depicts Diana, Duchess of St Albans in a three-quarter length pose, standing, wearing loose flowing dress and a wrap. She has a very serene, calm appearance as she is looking straight at the viewer. There is a landscape of trees in the background. The print is adhered in the corners to an archival backing, which is itself adhered in the upper corners to a larger backing. The print is trimmed to just beyond the plate mark. There are areas of discoloration in the margins and in the inscription area, but the print is otherwise in very good condition. The sheet measures 14.5" high and 10" wide. This mezzotint is held by multiple museums and institutions, including The British Museum, The National Portrait Gallery London, The Fine Arts Museum of Boston, The Lewis Walpole Library at Yale, The Yale Center for British Art, The Fitzwilliam Museum at Cambridge and The National Galleries of Scotland. The original Kneller painting is part of the British Royal Collection Trust and hangs in the King's Private Dining Room at Hampton Court Palace. Sir Godfrey Kneller (1646-1723) was a leading portrait painter of his time, particularly renowned for his depictions of the British aristocracy and royalty. He was born in Lübeck, Germany, and trained in Amsterdam under the painter Ferdinand Bol...

Tuko-See-Mathla, A Seminole Chief: A Hand-colored McKenney Hall Lithograph
By McKenney Hall
Located in Alamo, CA
This is an original 19th century hand-colored McKenney and Hall lithograph of a Native American entitled "Tuko-See-Mathla, A Seminole Chief, No. 106", published by Rice, Rutter & Co. in 1865. For his portrait, painted by Charles Bird King, Tuko-See-Mathla wore a colorful outfit, primarily of red and blue with tassels and a matching headdress, a necklace including his presidential peace medal, two metallic bands on each arm, beautiful high moccasin boots and he carries a rifle. He appears to be standing in a desert landscape. This original beautifully hand-colored McKenney and Hall lithograph is presented in a cream colored mat (adhered at the top), suitable for framing with a protective clear sleeve. The mat measures 13.88" x 11.75" and the sheet measures 10.63" x 7.38. There is one tiny spot in the lower portion of the left and right margins and minimal discoloration at the left and right edges (obscured by the mat), but the print is otherwise in excellent condition. Col. Thomas J. McKenney was Superintendant of The Bureau of Indian Affairs from 1816 until 1830. He was one of a very few government officials to defend American Indian interests and attempt to preserve their culture. He travelled to Indian lands meeting the Native American leaders. "February Bouquet" from The Twelve Months of Flowers series by Robert Furber
By Robert Furber
Located in Alamo, CA
This framed hand-colored engraving entitled "February Bouquet" is from 'The Twelve Months of Flowers' by Henry Furber, published in London in 1730 by Robert Sayer and John King. Each of the twelve hand-colored engravings in the book were produced from paintings by Pieter Casteels (1684-1749) and engraved by Henry Fletcher (1710-1753). The book featured twelve detailed engravings of seasonal plants in bloom in the form of a bouquet. More than 400 different species of flowering plants were included with each plant numbered and accompanied by a list of the corresponding species names. Thirty-five species of flowers are depicted in this engraving in a bouquet sitting in an ornate attractive bowl. A few of the flowers lie loose on a table. The flower species are listed in a table in the lower portion of the plate, along with the month that these flowers are in bloom. This colorful print is presented in a gold-colored wood frame with a cream-colored double mat with a heather green inner mat. The frame measures 23.5" High, 19" wide and 1.63" deep. There are a few small frame abrasions, but the print is in very good condition. Robert Furber...
