Natural walnut, blackened steel, satin brass, and merino wool felt. 5 Drawers - 40” wide x 36” tall x 24” deep. Custom dresser built in celebration of both craft and detail. The hand-finished, mitered wood cabinet is filled with felt-lined, dovetailed drawers. Machined brass pivoting pulls adorn the surface of the drawers juxtaposing contemporary with antiquity. Hand carved wood legs feature “honey-dripper” ribbing and allow for easy leveling of the cabinet on uneven floors. Made entirely by hand in our Chicago studio. This is a totally functional two door cupboard. It is created from hot-rolled steel and found steel. The legs are made from salvaged pipe. The panels on the door fronts and sides are made from salvaged pieces of steel with the original paint and texture making this modern industrial aesthetic a model of sustainable design. The pattern is inspired by the Quilts of Gee's Bend Alabama. Prominent colors in this piece are red, green blue and grey. There are two fixed shelves inside the cabinet. Jim Rose Two-door strips quilt cupboard Hot roll and found painted steel 36 H x 35 W x 18 D in 91.44 H x 88.90 W x 45.72 D cm Jim Rose b. 1966 Bio: Born in Indiana, Jim Rose lived in Europe until he returned to the United States to attend college. After one year at Bard College, Jim transferred to the School of the Art Institute in Chicago (SAIC) where he graduated in 1988 with a BFA. His skillful interpretation of the Shaker design is a result of intense research and field study of Shaker furniture, architecture, culture and history. After over two decades of dedicated work, he has mastered the minimalism of the Shaker technique and created his own unique visual vernacular. The quilts of Gee's Bend have become a monumental influence taking this artist's work to new levels of unique interpretation and artistry. His selection of aged steel results in a patina directly related to that of aged wood while his colored strips beautifully mimic worn cloth. Each piece of furniture is masterfully made and intended for daily use. Jim Rose’s steel furniture is featured every year at SOFA Chicago for the past 25 years. This lacquered display cabinet from Shanxi province was crafted in the mid-19th century using traditional mortise-and-tenon joinery methods. The enclosed lower half was used for general storage and the open upper shelf was used to display precious objects such as vases, curios, or piles of books. The exterior is darkened by a black lacquer finish and hand-painted with charming decorative motifs, including bronze censers, flower vases, scrolls, and scholars' objects. Original brass hardware secures the doors, now richly aged with a smooth patina and subtle oxidation.
