Austrian Biedermeier-period sofa crafted of mahogany veneer, upholstered in beige fabric with geometric motifs. This refined piece of furniture has rolled armrests decorated with twisted patterns and medallions, and large backrest highlighted with scrolls and palmette. The sofa rests on four square fluted legs. The Biedermeier period began in the states of the German Confederation and in the Austrian Empire in 1815 (Congress of Vienna) and ended in 1848 (March Revolution). The Biedermeier style referred mainly to the decorative arts, but also included sculpture and painting. In contrast to the opulence and heroism of Napoleon's Empire, the Biedermeier style promoted calm and simplicity. From 1830 onwards, it embodied a new, comfortable, bourgeois way of life. In furnishing, the emphasis was placed on the structure of the furniture that had robust and geometrical forms, softened by curves. This two-seater sofa model 3330 was designed by Arne Vodder for the Danish manufacturer Fritz Hansen during the 1960s. A museum piece, rarely available for sale, especially in the two-seater version. This sofa is upholstered in high-quality amber brown natural leather. Spacious and comfortable pillows are loosely placed. The wide armrests resemble the shape of a wing. The legs are made of black lacquered steel. Perfect proportions, Scandinavian craftsmanship with a clearly marked line of furniture due this project timelessness. The traditions and philosophical assumptions of Danish craftsmanship have been translated into a modern furniture idiom. Vodder was born in Denmark in 1926. Trained as a carpenter and architect, he studied with Finn Juhl at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen. After school, he worked as a designer in Hindsgaul, focusing primarily on office decor. In 1950, Vodder founded his own architectural and design studio with architect Anton Borg. Over the years, the studio moved to several locations in Copenhagen before finally settling in the suburb of Holte, north of the city. Vodder and Borg worked together until the 1970s. Vodder is best known for its furniture designs that were usually simple pieces consisting of natural materials such as rosewood and teak. His designs were often inspired by natural forms. Vodder collaborated with respected brands, designing furniture for manufacturers such as Fritz Hansen, France & Søn, Nielaus, Sibast, Kircodan. In the 1950s and 1970s, Vodder furniture designs were used by President Jimmy Carter at the White House and President Anwar Sadat in Cairo, and were incorporated into the United Nations Office in Geneva and graced many hotels, banks, and embassies around the world. His works have been widely presented both individually and in collective exhibitions with artists such as Verner Panton and Nanna Ditzel. Fritz Hansen, also known as the Republic of Fritz Hansen, is a Danish furniture design company whose history begins in 1872 in Nakskov. From the very beginning, Fritz Hansen and his son Christian placed emphasis on the high quality of their furniture, which is their hallmark until the present day. The long list of orders in the first fifty years of the company's operation confirms this. At the beginning of the 20th century, Christian Hansen began experimenting with the steam-bending of beech wood, and in 1915 he created the first laminated chairs, which became the company's specialty. Arne Jacobsen completely dominated the 1950s in the company. He started working together in 1934, but his breakthrough came when he created the Ant laminated chair in 1952. The next projects: Series 7 (1955), Swan (1958) and Egg (1958), which were designed for the Royal Hotel in Copenhagen, became milestones in the history of Fritz Hansen and are still produced today. Biography Not wishing to simply produce or be rational about a product, Noé Duchaufour-Lawrance prefers that each of his projects has its own unique scenario, nourished without distinction between uses, forms, materials or aesthetics. For him, curves and straight lines, sensuality and strictness interact in confrontations that are conducive to create meaning and awaken our senses. Through his desire to breath life into both the objects and spaces he designs, Noé Duchaufour-Lawrance views each project as an organic form that will grow over time with its user, almost like a natural element that can Challenge human order or disorder. Originally, Noé Duchaufour-Lawrance was a sculptor, preoccupied with each work he created by a story and intimate link with nature that he felt the need to retranscribe by using his hands. But soon the idea of stirring emotions in others by creating useful forms became an evident path for someone who loves the beautiful as much as the functional and harmony as much as social responsibility. So he turned to design. Noé Duchaufour-Lawrance often compares his approach to tsubo niwa, the tiny garden at the centre of a traditional Japanese house. Like an organic pulse in a profession dedicated to meeting the demands of an industry, a market or a specific client, he is as ready to design objects with inspired lines for manufacturers (Bernhardt Design, Ceccotti Collezioni, Cinna, Ligne Roset, La Chance, Petite Friture, Tacchini, Zanotta.) as he is to imagine harmonious living areas (Senderens, Air France Lounges, Ciel de Paris, Meurice Oenotheque, Transumance Chalet, #Cloud Paris lounge) or even to define a product image or showcase for a famous brand (Paco Rabanne, YSL Beauty, Perrier-Jouët,). Thus in 2015 Montblanc associated its name with Noé Duchaufour-Lawrance, entrusting him with the architectural plans of the company’s 500 boutiques worldwide. His unique approach has led him to conceive exceptional objects that have been presented in the Pierre bergere gallery in Brussels and the BSL gallery in Paris. He has participated in prestigious events like the AD Interiors exhibition at Paris’ Musée des Arts Decoratifs in 2013 and more recently, the AD collections exhibition, also in Paris. His creative meanderings have led him to initiate a collaboration with the Neal Feay workshop in the United States and also to work with two royal factories in France: Mobilier National (National Furniture) and the Manufacture de Sevres (ceramics). The latter two endeavors combine his contemporary vision of design with the finely-honed skills of master craftsmen that were used in the 18th century. His approach has been acclaimed by the French and international press and he has received many prizes including NeoCon Silver 2016 for his Modern Family collection for Bernhardt Design, the 2015 Via Label, the 2014 Janus business prize for the Air France Salons, the GQ Best Designer prize in 2012, the prestigious Red Dot prize for Best Product in 2011 and both the Elle Decoration International Design Prize and Wallpaper Design Award in 2009. With his innate fondness for Art Nouveau, he relies not only on the universal character of nature to impose shapes that make sense but believes that the IDEA of a total, multidisciplinary art is vital for contemporary creation.
