20th Century, Italian Bronze Planter or Gueridon
Located in IT
20th century, Italian bronze planter or Gueridon Measures: cm W 56 x maximum diameter 51 x H 90. H on the floor of the wide 81 cm This refined planter was made in Italy, in Naples, towards the Early 20th Century in the style of «Retour d'Egypte». It consists of a tripod structure in finely chiselled gilded bronze and lacquered in tones. Each leg originates with scroll decorations and phytomorphic elements with golden details, supported by a sphinx with hairstyle, tail and golden wings. This sits on a curvilinear and wavy element decorated with golden ramage and a man’s head with a long beard of classic taste. The legs end with an injured foot and rest on a tripartite base that connects them. In the middle of each leg there is a bronze junction with curls and volutes that converges towards the others in the center, where a vertical element contributes to the momentum and gracefulness of the whole. The basin of the planter is in lacquered tin, with gold edges and reserves. The rising part of the tub has some holes that allow the breathability of the space. This tripod is inspired, with variations, to a famous model of the brothers Luigi and Antonio Manfredini, active in Milan at the beginning of the nineteenth century, financed by the viceroy of Italy Eugenio de Beauharnais, adopted son of Napoleon Bonaparte, for the opening of the real manufacture of Eugenia. The Retour d'Egypte style was widely echoed in France and Europe and originated from General Bonaparte’s military campaign in Egypt in 1799. The fashion of the Egyptians had already in Italy found a previous interpreter in the engraver Giovan Battista Piranesi, but the vast diffusion that also had in the furniture the Egyptian ornament...

Josef Hoffmann Gueridon, circa 1910, Austria
By Josef Hoffmann
Located in Girona, Spain
Josef Hoffmann Gueridon. Made with bentwood. Vienna Secession Circa 1910, Austria. Vintage condition. The Austrian architect Josef Hoffmann was a central figure in the evolution of modern design, and a leader in an aesthetic movement born in Europe in the late 19th century that rejected florid, extravagant ornamentation in favor of a new emphasis on simplicity of line. As a founder of the turn-of-the-century Wiener Werkstätte (in English: the Viennese Workshops), a design cooperative that produced superbly crafted furniture and housewares, Hoffmann was a pioneering practitioner of what would become a fundamental principle of modernism: that good design is a way of life. Hoffmann came of age amidst a shift in the culture of the applied arts, as a conservative order that looked only to the past for inspiration was pushed aside. But what, exactly, would replace that order was in question, and Hoffmann’s career embodies the developing patterns of design’s new spirit. His architectural work reflects his time as a student of the Vienna architect Otto Wagner, who disdained excessive decoration and employed new materials such as steel girders and reinforced concrete to create buildings with airy, open interiors full of light. As a designer of furniture and interiors, Hoffmann was consistently open-minded about the aesthetics he explored. He was an early adherent of the flowing, organic forms of the Art Nouveau design movement that began to flourish in the late 1880s, but by the opening of the Wiener Werkstätte in 1903, Hoffmann’s designs embraced the beauty of geometry in pieces that feature grids and angular forms. Hoffmann’s greatest works reflect his ability to combine seemingly conflicting design visions into coherent wholes. His architectural masterpiece, the Stoclet Palace in Brussels, has an exterior that groups together simple geometric forms and spacious interiors marked by subtly naturalistic design details that lend rooms an air of charm and geniality. Hoffmann’s signature furniture design is an adjustable lounge chair, the Sitzmaschine (1905), that marries a curving frame with square and rectangular back- and side rests. This piece, like so many others by Hoffmann, reflects a groundbreaking, forward-thinking appreciation for the union of different looks and sources that marks the best of interior design in our own day. Moreover, items offered on these pages, which range from enameled silver jewelry, to a silver flower vase basket, to lighting pendants and sconces...

Large Empire style pedestal table in Mahogany and Mahogany veneer
Located in Paris, FR
Very handsome Empire-style pedestal table in mahogany and superb ormolu mount after a model by Jacob-Desmalter, the circular top in verde antico marble surmounting a mahogany frieze mounted with a band of laurel leaves between rosettes, supported by the heads of three finely chased ormolu female caryatids, each facing outwards, hair braided, bare feet and arms crossed, wearing armbands and a diaphanous gown, the brace centered by a chased covered urn flanked by three elegant squatting winged sphinxes wearing Nemean headdresses and braids tied in front, all resting on claw feet. The design of this superb pedestal table was inspired by a famous table-console or "double-sided console" made by the renowned Parisian cabinetmaker Jacob-Desmalter, itself based on designs by Napoleon's chief architects and ornamentalists, Charles Percier (1764-1838) and Pierre François Léonard Fontaine...

Dichroic Glass Side Table, Rona Koblenz
Located in Geneve, CH
Dichroic side table - Rona Koblenz Measures: 49 x 50 x 30 cm "A spectrum (plural spectra or spectrums) is a condition that is not limited to a specific set of values but can vary infinitely within a continuum". - Rona Meyuchas-Koblenz is inspired by reflection and refraction, absorbent and repellent. The studio’s continuous interest to create a timeless dialogue from past to future through presently active living, has been expressed in its current work, ‘Spectra’, using Dichroic finished glass as a dominant material. The environment we live in is affected by a spectrum of different conditions. Kukka chose to use Dichroic glass to help express the significant conditions affected by light and time, reflection and refraction. Similar to the social behavior expressed through social media channels and the internet: absorbing and repelling, yet the glass, a modern material used since the Roman empire, has its own structural, solid properties. The quartz is an abundant mineral in earth. The slabs are solid, reflecting physical, stable and timeless design. "I am particularly interested to create timeless design by using simple geometry and basic materials . The dialogue between the two is expressed in Spectra" - Rona Meyuchas-Koblenz Rona Meyuchas-Koblenz Born in Tel-Aviv, Rona is an internationally acclaimed product designer, art director and researcher. She graduated in 1999 with a Master degree from the Scuola politecnica di design in Milan and started her career by working in different design consultancies in Milan and London. Rona's experience in design and manufacturing then motivated her to create products under her own label, and her first collection was released in Milan during Salone del Mobile 2007 at Spazio Romeo Gigli. The following year she was approached by the British embassy in Milan to exhibit selected products at The Galleria d’Arte moderna in Milan, an exhibition curated by Sir Paul Smith and Moroso. The minimalist democratic approach and an honest design are most recognized with Rona’s style and work. In 2010, she created the brand kukka, which works for architects, interior designers, private clients and retailers such as Conran, Paul Smith, La Rinascente, Selfridges, or De Padova. The studio, underpinned by creative stimulation, specializes in experimenting with materials, manufacturing methods and technology. Rona is also a visiting lecturer (V&A, LFA, Design Museum talks, ICFF, Shenkar College, Plymouth university) a writer (BVD Magazine) , tutor (Domain Boisbuchet, Shenkar College) and the founder of Designers in the Middle.
