Quartet No. 1
By Eugene Larkin
Located in Kansas City, MO
Eugene Larkin Quartet No. 1 Woodcut in two colors Signed and titled by hand Size: 20 x 29.5 inches COA provided Eugene Larkin (1921-2010) The late Eugene Larkin was an artist who worked in the Twin Cities area for many years and needs little introduction. His works have been shown, collected and appreciated by numerous galleries, museums and collectors throughout the United States. Larkin was influential both as an artist and as a teacher. He taught at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design between 1954 and 1969, where he was head of printmaking and Chairman of the Division of Fine Arts. From 1969-1991 he was a professor in the Design Department at the University of Minnesota. Eugene Larkin, a lithographer, teacher and artist who left behind scores of works, some of them in the permanent collections of the Library of Congress and the Museum of Modern Art. He was considered an early promoter of lithography education, Larkin introduced it into arts programs while teaching at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design and the University of Minnesota. He held a prominent place in the art world through decades of working and teaching in Minneapolis. His work depicted a wide range of subjects, from musicians to nature, including a series of woodcuts based on William Blake's ""Songs of Innocence and Experience." Larkin also wrote a textbook, ""Design: The Search for Unity."" It was his work with lithography, an 18th-century printmaking process, for which he was best known. His last local exhibit was a retrospective at The University of Minnesota Weisman Museum in 2005. ""Sometimes I start the artistic process from a literary source - Adam and Eve, the Egyptian nature gods, or classical Greek themes but sometimes I start from nature. Trees have always been a favorite subject. I see trees as people, as vertical objects...

Gauguin, The Long Night (Te Po), Gauguin (after)
By Paul Gauguin
Located in Southampton, NY
Woodcut on vélin Utopian paper. Unsigned and unnumbered, as issued. Good Condition. Notes: From the folio, Gauguin, A portfolio of 12 color woodblocks, Paul Gauguin, French, 1848-1903 from the collection of the Museum Of Fine Arts, Boston, 1946. Rendered by Albert Carman (1899-1949); published the Museum Of Fine Arts, Boston and The Studio Publications, Inc., New York and London; printed by Holme Press Inc., New York, in an edition of MMMD. Excerpted from the folio, Paul Gauguin and Emil Bernard at Pont-Aven, Brittany, in 1888, each made a bas-relief, wooden panel to decorate a piece of furniture for a friend. In order to keep a record of their designs, a few inked impressions were made on paper. The illustration at left is a reproduction of a print which is possibly one of the above mentioned. It is further possible that this experiment later gave Gauguin the idea of making woodcuts. Just as his work in painting expressed a revolt against the overemphasis on factual representation of the nineteenth century in favor of decorative pattern and color, so also his woodcuts leaned strongly to the same side of the balance. Ten of the cuts reproduced (all excepting Soyez Amoureuses and Changement de Residence), which constitute the whole of his best known series, were made at Pont-Aven beginning in the fall of 1894, after Gauguin's return from his first trip to Tahiti and after he broke his ankle. They were at first roughly cut with a common carpenter's gouge, and the flat surfaces sandpapered and engraved with a sharp in-strument, perhaps an engraver's burin. A few trial proofs were printed in black ink only. Then the hollows were deepened with a woodcutter's gouge and highlights were added. An edition of thirty to fifty impressions of each subject, with the addition of color blocks (one, two or three), was made by Louis Roy...

About the Publication: Parallelement (Parallel), published and printed in 1969 by Pierre de Tartas, Paris-Bievres, is one of the most refined and luxurious livres d'artiste of the late twentieth century, uniting Paul Verlaines celebrated poetry with the visionary imagery of Leonor Fini. Produced with uncompromising standards of printing, paper, and typographic craftsmanship, the folio exemplifies the golden era of French limited-edition printmaking. Issued in multiple paper states—from Japon nacre to grand velin d'Arches—the album reflects the meticulous care, material richness, and artistic ambition characteristic of Pierre de Tartas' finest publications, affirming its status as a masterwork in the tradition of French illustrated albums. About the Artist: Leonor Fini (1907–1996) was an Argentine-born Italian-French painter, illustrator, author, and stage designer whose electrifying fusion of myth, mysticism, eroticism, and psychological depth established her as one of the most unmistakable and influential artistic voices of the twentieth century. Celebrated for depicting women as sovereign, enigmatic, and psychologically commanding beings, Fini rejected the patriarchal hierarchy of Surrealism even as she exhibited alongside its foremost figures, forging instead a fiercely independent path defined by theatricality, female autonomy, and visionary imagination. Her richly symbolic universe filled with sphinxes, priestesses, witches, and androgynous guardians was shaped by a broad constellation of influences including Pablo Picasso, Alexander Calder, Alberto Giacometti, Salvador Dali, Joan Miro, Wassily Kandinsky, Marcel Duchamp, and Man Ray, while also drawing deeply from Symbolist painting, Renaissance portraiture, and Venetian colorism. Moving among artists such as Max Ernst, Giorgio de Chirico, Leonora Carrington, Dorothea Tanning, Meret Oppenheim, and Pavel Tchelitchew, she nevertheless maintained a singular vision whose impact reverberates through the work of later creators including Kiki Smith, Cindy Sherman, Marlene Dumas, Tracey Emin, Pierre et Gilles, Laurie Simmons, and numerous feminist and queer artists who embraced her exploration of gender, identity, and psychological mythology. A prolific illustrator and designer, Fini also shaped European performance culture through celebrated costumes and stage designs, while her paintings entered major museum collections worldwide, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Tate Modern, Centre Pompidou, the Museum of Modern Art in Buenos Aires, and the Moderna Museet. Known for her imaginative freedom, elaborate personal style, and legendary Parisian salon, she remains a defining figure in feminist and avant-garde art history. The highest auction record for Leonor Fini was achieved when her self-portrait Autoportrait au Scorpion sold for 2,319,000 USD at Sotheby's New York on May 12, 2021, underscoring the dramatic rise in appreciation for her visionary legacy. Exclusive Invitation Card to Andy Warhol Memorial Lunch from Estate of Tim Hunt
By Andy Warhol
Located in New York, NY
SUPER RARE! Invitation Card to private Andy Warhol Memorial Lunch, from the Estate of Tim Hunt, 1987 Offset lithograph card 6 1/2 × 3 3/5 inches Unframed This exclusive invitation to the private memorial lunch for Andy Warhol is an historic collectors item. Few people in the world own this card other than those who were invited to the event and/or their heirs, though it has occasionally appeared at public auction now that another generation has passed. This offset lithograph invitation card to Andy Warhol's Memorial Lunch at the Diamond Horseshoe in the Paramount Hotel bears an image of Andy Warhol's iconic 1967 Marilyn on one side, and on the other side is an announcement that reads as follows: ANDY WARHOL A Memorial Lunch Wednesday, April 1, 1987 The Diamond Horseshoe 235 West 46th Street New York City Special thanks to: Carillon Importers Caffe Condotti Glorious Food All leftover food and flowers will be donated to the homeless program at Church of the Heavenly Rest. Marilyn - Andy Warhol 1967 The provenance of this card is impressive as it comes from the estate of Warhol Foundation curator and sales agent Tim Hunt, who was married to bestselling author Tama Janowitz, author of "Slaves of New York". Tama would describe how she met Tim Hunt as follows:  "Andy Warhol died in 1987. In the long hot summer after, I bought a tiny basement apartment on West 70th Street over by West End Ave. That’s when I met Tim Hunt. A model for Werther’s Caramel and Ralph Lauren who’d gone to Oxford and had a brother who was a famous race car driver, he’d been with Christie’s a few years and had come over from England to work on the Warhol estate. He would later become my husband. Andy would have loved Tim. But the two had never met..." The event in this invitation is the more exclusive Memorial Lunch on April 1st 1987, held prior to Warhol's Memorial Mass at St. John the Divine, later that evening, the latter of which was attended by thousands of people. The press referred to this earlier event as a "Special Memorial Lunch Party" - using the vernacular of the day, as everything in the mid to late 1980s seemed like a party - until it was not. Interestingly, no start time, or even time range, is mentioned on this invitation - something that is rarely if ever missing from such an item; further evidence that it wasn't enough just to get this card; one had to already be in the know to be able to attend. Either that, or the lunch party was going on all day - so invitees could show up whenever they wanted. Or, alternatively, it was simply an accidental omission with no hidden message. And another side note: one of the sponsors of this Memorial luncheon, Carillon Importers, is the holding company or importer for Absolut Vodka, which commissioned Andy Warhol to create a series of advertising ads that would comprise one of the most successful, award-winning advertising campaigns of the era - and the most successful of the company's history. Who attended this event? Probably everybody who was anybody in the nexis of art, celebrity, high fashion and big business. Getty images features photographs by celebrity paparazzo Ron Galella of some of Warhol pals entering or leaving the Diamond Horseshoe for this exclusive event including Dianne Brill...
