An 18th century Chinese Porcelain Famille Rose Mandarin 3-Piece vase Garniture Set. A status symbol between the 17th and 19th centuries, most garniture sets have by now been damaged or broken up with the individual pieces sold off. Few complete sets now exist, and even fewer survive in their original state, which makes this beautifully painted set of three Chinese Porcelain Famille Rose vases so much more special. With mandarin orange and gilt unusually bold and swooping dragon handles, each delicately decorated vase is completed with a lid seating a gloriously pompous foo dog. The bodies are decorated with hand painted famille rose flowerpot cartouches, as well as, chirping birds, and banded flowers and vines.

Set of Five Yohen-Kin Shino Ceramic Plates by Suzuki Tomio

Japanese ceramic Suzuki Tomio (born in 1948) specializes in Shino ware. In 2003, he successfully developed Yohen-kin or transformed gold Shino, an opulent and golden glaze which led to a number of luster glazes in the artist’s growing body of work. Inspired by the golden tea ceremony room in Osaka Castle commissioned by Toyotomi Hideyoshi (1536-1598) where honored guests were served tea from a glittering bowl coated with pure gold, it took the artist nearly a decade of experimentation and refinement to achieve the glaze while strictly adhering to traditional shino making techniques.
This set of five Yohen-kin plates displays a lustrous transformation. Signed on the bottom of plates. With original wrap cloth and the storage tomobako box entitled and signed by the artist in Kanji, with additional red seal. The size of the box is 5-1/8 x 8-1/4 x 8-1/4 inches.

Born in Melrose, Ohio in 1922, Clyde Burt would go on to become a major voice in American studio ceramics. He studied at Fort Wayne Art School and later at the Cape Cod School of Art before landing at the Cranbrook Academy of Art to study under Maija Grotell. While Grotell is responsible for bringing the wheel to Cranbrook, Burt made it central to his practice and his thrown works express the same endless curiosity as his teacher. Upon returning to Ohio, Burt built a home studio on his family’s farmland near the Little Auglaize River and harvested rich clay from the surrounding area. A potter and painter, Albert Green (1914 - 1994) earned an international reputation for his ceramics, stoneware, and canvases. A graduate of the University of Pennsylvania, he studied painting at the Art Students League in New York City, supporting himself with retail jobs selling men’s clothing. But in 1946 a chance encounter with a display of contemporary Japanese pottery inspired him on the spot to switch from painting to pottery. Green learned pottery techniques through engineering manuals and applied his knowledge of college chemistry to teach himself glazing. “In those days I looked at pots constantly,” he said. “I’d travel 100 miles to look at a good pot. I simply taught myself.”
He took his painting skills and applied them to his clay works, creating pieces that critics praised for their painterly qualities and subtle sense of color. In 1976, he retired from the retail clothing...

Turi Heisselberg Pedersen has, all through her career, strived to develop the vessel as abstract form and as an independent sculptural object.
As Turi notes “working in clay is to me connected with many underlying cultural bound references, but also strongly connected to nature. The very process of building in clay is a process from nature to culture. We have an inherent understanding of beauty and design evolved in thousands of years of visual impressions from our cultural history, but especially also from nature. In this context, I am aiming to create a visual and emotional reading of the objects, working with shape, rhythm, volume, movement, and texture”.
In the interplay between culture and nature, Turi’s works are inspired by geological structures and crystal formations, but also by architecture, the edged rendering of a computer drawing or folded paper shapes. Most of her faceted shapes seem to have a seed of coincidence or unplanned development, reminding one of crystal formations growing in irregular clusters.?
Heisselberg Pedersen’s sculptures are hand-modeled from stoneware and glazed with slip-glazes, which gives the works a stone-like, dry surface with a rich texture. Some of Turi’s designs...
