Important and Rare Original circa 1900 Carlo Bugatti Occasional Table Ebonized
By Carlo Bugatti
Located in West Sussex, Pulborough
We are delighted to offer for sale this exceptionally rare and important original circa 1900 Carlo Bugatti occasional table
This table is special, designed by Carlo Bugatti, Italy around 1900, it’s a rectangular walnut occasional or centre table, partly ebonized, with floral inlays made of pewter, the legs partially covered with copper sheet, the tabletop covered with goatskin, this table was exhibited at the Musee d'Orsay, Paris, 2001
Carlo Bugatti (2 February 1856-April 1940) was an Italian decorator, designer and manufacturer of Art Nouveau furniture, models of jewelry, and musical instruments. Bugatti was born 2 February 1856 in Milan, in what would remain until 1859 the kingdom of Lombardy: he died in Molsheim, France.
Biography:
Son of Giovanni Luigi Bugatti, a specialist in interior decoration, Carlo studied firstly at the Brera Academy in Milan, and subsequently, from 1875, at the Académie des Beaux Arts in Paris. In 1880 he started to manufacture furniture in Milan, later transferring to France.
From 1888 he began to be successful beyond Italy. Nevertheless, till 1904 he maintained a Milan workshop in the city's Via Castelfiardo 6.
He was also, like his father, trained as an architect, but there is no evidence that any of his architectural designs were ever executed.
He triumphed at the exhibition of decorative art in Turin in 1902 and returned to Paris in 1904. Father of sculptor Rembrandt Bugatti and automobile manufacturer Ettore Bugatti, he moved in 1910 to Pierrefonds where he established an atelier.
From 1914-1918 he was nominated mayor of the village, and the outspoken anti-German industrialist Adolphe Clément-Bayard, who lived at the Domaine du Bois d'Aucourt, entrusted its upkeep to him. From then on, he devoted himself entirely to painting. After the suicide of his son Rembrandt in 1916, Bugatti, then 60, produced less, but he remained influential.
In 1935, at the age of 79, he retired near his son Ettore's family in Alsace. He settled in a flat north of Château Saint-Jean, Dorlisheim, with his wife Teresa (who died shortly afterwards), at the domain of promotion of Bugatti property of his son Ettore. He spent his last months at his apartment at the Bugatti factory in Molsheim, where he frequented the workmen and the house of 'the Hardtmühle', living with Ettore and his family.
In April 1940, he died at the hospital in Molsheim. He is buried in the Bugatti family cemetery at Dorlisheim. The Bugatti section of Molsheim's municipal Musée de la Chartreuse displays...

19th Century Irish Table with Marble-Inlaid Top having Aristocratic Coat of Arms
By J. Darmanin
Sons, Robert Strahan
Located in London, GB
The Specimen Pietra Dura Marble Armorial Top
By Joseph Darmanin of Malta
The shaped circular top finely inlaid with the arms of General Robert Edward King, 1st Viscount Lorton (1773-1854), masterfully executed in pietra dura and specimen marbles upon a fossil-rich yellow marble ground. The inlaid work is of exceptional delicacy, having all the hallmarks of the greatest heraldic tops by the famous makers, including the use of delicate shaded marbles.
The richly carved base, unmistakably Irish in conception and executed in dense, darkly patinated mahogany, is by Strahan of Dublin, one of the foremost cabinetmakers of his day. The double C-scrolled tripartite base enriched with carved flowers leading to the acanthus clasped pedestal support, on brass hidden castors.
The frame stamped 'Strahan' and retaining its original paper label from Strahan's Henry Street workshop. The underside of the marble top equally bearing its original trade label of 'J. Darmanin & Sons […] Malt.'
The base, Irish, circa 1835
The top, Maltese, circa 1830
Provenance
Commissioned by General Robert Edward King, 1st Viscount Lorton
Originally housed in the Billiard Room at Rockingham House, Co. Roscommon
By descent through the King-Harman family
Lady Dunn
Thence by descent
Private Collection, UK
Dimensions: H: 29 in / 74 cm Dia: 38 in / 97 cm
This table was most likely acquired by Lord Lorton on one of his Grand Tours-either in 1825 or 1836-aligning with Darmanin's transition to "& Sons." The Irish base, dated slightly later, suggests the top was mounted upon return, a common practice for souvenirs of elite European travel. The table remained at Rockingham House until its mid-20th-century demolition, a rare survivor from what was once considered John Nash's finest classical house in Ireland.
J. Darmanin & Sons of Malta
The renowned 'Marble Workers Darmanin' were Malta's leading marble craftsmen in the 19th century. They excelled in creating 'Monumental and Mosaic Slabs and other Decorative Artworks,' notably mosaic table tops...

Fine Regency Mahogany Library Centre Table
Located in Lymington, GB
A fine Regency-period tilt-top brass inlaid mahogany and calamander library center table.
Raised on a concave-sided triform base, with well-modelled cast-brass scrolling feet.
Also referred to as a monopodium (table).
All in excellent condition, well figured, and of very good rich color.
Typical of designs by Thomas Hope (1769 - 1831).
This form of antique table is also associated with work by George Bullock (1777 - 1818) and George Oakley (circa 1765 - 1841).
Refs:
A similar table with a leather insert, in the manner of Thomas Hope, circa 1800 - 1805, was sold in London for £39,650 - December 2010.
This early 19th century table is reminiscent of the ‘Grecian’ style that the pioneering collector and designer Thomas Hope (1769-1831) popularized in Britain with the publication of ‘Household Furniture and Interior Decoration’ in 1807.
Thos. Hope (banker, born 1769, d. 1831)
The furniture manufacturer George Oakley (circa 1765-1841) was greatly influenced by Hope’s designs, and produced fashionable furniture in this style, using brass and star inlays similar to our table on offer. The firm’s designs and craftsmanship earned them royal patronage, and Oakley worked for the Prince Regent at Carlton House, as well as supplying furniture and upholstery for The Mansion House and The Bank of England. His work for the Cheere family - of Papworth Hall, Cambridgeshire, UK - is well documented.
The reference to Geo. Oakley relates to a known table of this pattern in calamander wood and brass marquetry of starred-ribbon guilloche, which corresponds to the brass marquetry in a table supplied by Oakley in 1810 to Papworth Hall.

Parker, R. 'History of Papworth Everard...
