Barkoff seeks to “portray a sense of vastness” and instill feelings of awe in his viewers, he says. Furthering his exploration of the abstract, Barkoff paints in his studio, rather than en plein air, fabricating landscapes from his visual and emotional memories. The Impressionist-turned-Expressionist painter is inspired by the atmospheric qualities of works by Claude Monet and J. M. W. Turner and cites Gerhard Richter as a more contemporary influence. He recently transitioned from using a paintbrush to using a squeegee and palette knives for his work, as the latter allow for greater spontaneity and manipulation of color.
He says of his work: “Looking at a blank canvas can be both exciting and frightening at the same time. Most of the time exciting wins out and I plunge in. That is, I paint the landscape, which for me is what it’s all about. The landscape represents nature and contemplating nature is being in touch with God. You could cast me as a modern-day Luminist-Tonalist-Impressionist. Monet’s Water Lilies have been a big influence, along with the landscape painter Wolf Kahn.”

Carol Bennett's artwork is a meditative journey through both the water and through life. She is one of the few artists to truly capture what it's like to be in and moving and swimming through the water.
For Carol, the act of swimming underwater is similar to the process of painting. Her approach results in multi-layered surfaces that are intricate and textured and unexpected. She is constantly experimenting with her pieces: adding, subtracting, sanding. When she is not painting Swimmers, she is capturing the fish surrounding her.
She has created over 100 large public and corporate commissions internationally, and is in private collections around the world. Carol Bennett was recently currently featured in two exhibits at the Honolulu Museum of Art. Networking and Water: Carol Bennett featuring female swimmers, as well as marine nets floating or submerged in water. Bennett was also part of the group exhibit Making Waves highlighting the important role of women artists in the museum’s contemporary collection. In this show, the works by international and Hawaii-based artists all have a relationship to water. Featured artists also included: April Gornik, Agnes Martin, Judy Pfaff, Kiki Smith and Pat Steir!

Using symmetry as a basis, Drakopoulos derives structure by combining elements from the natural world and science. Modifying these elements digitally, Drakopoulos distills into a pattern or shape, and then layers them with a different structure and repeats the process of layering paint in resin. She tries to find the most subtle and interesting way to connect the different layers that will reveal an underlying structure or system.
Slowly as the work evolves, these inner-connections and details begin to form and define the energy and invisible forces that govern the movement of matter, from the microcosmic level of molecules and light particles, to the macrocosmic of planets and galaxies. Drakopoulos views the cosmos as a primordial, all encompassing field within which the illusion of matter is created and dissolved. In this field, particles come together to create complex structures and matter evolves into its maximum state of order. This moment is temporary, a state of transition. The form will subsequently dissolve and the process will begin again. The central images that appear in her work describe this moment of emergence. They are not a representation of actual cosmic phenomena but rather an invented image of an inner mindscape.
