We recently reclaimed five Venini balls lamps from the renovation of a palazzo in Florence. These 1960s Murano glass ball lights are clear with opaque white diagonal stripes. The murano glass balls are extremely special and are in perfect condition. The metal rods, ceiling rose and fittings are tarnished with age as can be seen from the photographs. The new owner will need to be happy with this level of tarnish or replace the metal work. The lights have their original wiring but may benefit from rewiring. This level of wear together with the tarnished metal have been reflected in the price. They are €800 and we currently have 5 of these available.

The lamp bulb is adjustable in height achieved by a bracket that allows the lamp to be slid up and down the lamp stem.
This lamp was designed by the Italian duo formed by Angelo Ostuni & Renato Forti and manufactured by O-Luce in 1958.

Founded in 1945 by Giuseppe Ostuni, Oluce is the oldest Italian design company still operating in the lighting world, a unique production excellence which translates passionate aesthetic and technological research into the potential of light into actual form. Over the years, Oluce has succeeded in building a collection structured like a tale, rich and multifaceted, inhabited by products that transcend fashion to become Italian design icons.
Its relationship with the design world begins
In 1951, Oluce successfully took part in the IX Triennale, presenting – in the lighting section curated by Achille, Livio and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni – a Luminator designed by Franco Buzzi. As was typical at that time, the company instantly gained visibility on the international panorama thanks to Domus magazine. Major success was then reasserted by Tito Agnoli with nominations at the second edition of the Compasso d’Oro awards, in 1955, for his two lamps (the 363 floor lamp and a special bookshelf model). In 1956 these were followed in rapid succession by two more nominations: one for a remarkable table lamp in polyvinyl slats and another for a pendant lamp (mod. 4461) with double perspex shade. Bulbs are sorrounded by 24 led crystal vertical elements to diffuse the light with the refraction principle.
This is an interesting version of the Sciolari's production. Usually he is known for bare un-shaded lights and great, sculptural, metalwork. Most of the time it's missing a play with light. Here Gaetano has used classic crystal chandelier in a contemporary revised and updated design. A step in the past: chandeliers were made to have many upward lights (in origin candles) to provide greater light output for larger rooms. The addition of elements of glass or crystal all around was not made to shade the light, but to refract it, creating the impression of multiplying the light candles or bulbs used. This lighting play was used with all the leaves and frills of Murano chandeliers and French crystal chandeliers...

Sculptural chandelier with a unique combination of reticello and Pulegoso finis.
The reticello bowl what indicates the decade. It's made by overlapping two filigree bowls spiralizer in opposite directions. Before Carlo Scarpa and Dino Martens works in the 1940s, reticello was made without bubbles in the middle of each square of clear glass resulting by the nesting. It's simply because it was considered a flaw to see the bubbles. On the next decade, the overlapping was done on the Piera as the bubble trapped by the canes was then considered a plus.
The 14 leaves have a central striped clear stem and the feathers are made in Pulegoso. My friend Sergio Rossi, master of Murano, when he saw the picture said "the times when Pulegoso was made in the Crucible". Full batch of Pulegoso was made by Barovier for the lighting and Venini or Seguso for accessories.
The Pulegoso finish, from puleghe (chips, the chemical dust that is added to create an infinitive number of bubbles inside the glass mass) is a signature of the Barovier chandelier.
