Moshe Matus (Matusovski) 1908, Warsaw, Russian Poland - November 23, 1958 Toronto, Canada. was a Polish Israeli modernist painter who lived during the last decade of his life in The United States and Canada. Matus was born in 1908 in the Russian city of Warsaw, into a traditional and Zionist family, the eldest of the three children of Dr. Josef Matusovsky, a dentist, and was a member of Hashomer Hatzair in Warsaw in 1924. When he was 15, He studied at the Bezalel Academy of Art and Design in the 1920s with Boris Schatz and was educated at the Herzliya Gymnasium where he studied painting and sculpture. He studied for several years at École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts (Bose-R) in Paris. He returned to Tel Aviv and lived there on Sheinkin Street. Paul Henry Brach, (born March 13, 1924 in New York City - d.November 16, 2007 in Easthampton, New York) was an American abstract painter and a lecturer and educator.
As an abstract painter Paul Brach exhibited his work in New York with the Leo Castelli Gallery, the Cordier & Eckstrom Gallery, and with the André Emmerich Gallery and then later with Flomenhaft Gallery. Paul Brach's estate is represented exclusively by Eric Firestone Gallery.
Paul Brach was born in New York City and was raised in Brooklyn and the Bronx. He went to the University of Iowa where he studied painting with Grant Wood. He served in the US Army during World War II. After the war, he finished school in Iowa on the GI Bill. At the University of Iowa he met the artist Miriam Schapiro and in 1946 they married. By 1951 they moved back to New York City and befriended many of the artists in the downtown Abstract expressionist New York School, including Joan Mitchell, Larry Rivers, Knox Martin and Michael Goldberg. He was associated with the New York print studio Atelier 17 (Stanley Hayter) During the early 1960s Brach had part-time teaching jobs at The New School, Cooper Union, The Parsons School of Design and Cornell University's New York City Program.
In 1967 Brach and his wife Miriam Schapiro moved to Southern California. He became the Dean of the CalArts program in Los Angeles in 1969. As dean of the School of Art at the California Institute from 1969 to 1975, Mr. Brach hired John Baldessari, Allan Kaprow and the critic Max Kozloff, among

The Original American Colony was a colony established in Jerusalem in 1881 by members of a utopian society led by Anna and Horatio Spafford. Now a hotel in East Jerusalem, it is still known by that name today.
After suffering a series tragic losses following the Great Chicago Fire of 1871 (see hymn "It is Well with My Soul"), Chicago residents Anna and Horatio Spafford led a small American contingent in 1881 to Jerusalem to form a utopian society. The "American Colony," as it became known, was later joined by Swedish Christians. The society engaged in philanthropic work amongst the people of Jerusalem regardless of religious affiliation, gaining the trust of the local Muslim, Jewish, and Christian communities.During and immediately after World War I, the American Colony carried out philanthropic work to alleviate the suffering of the local inhabitants, opening soup kitchens, hospitals, orphanages and other charitable ventures.
Towards the end of the 1950s, the society's communal residence was converted into the American Colony Hotel. The hotel is an integral part of the Jerusalem landscape where members of all communities in Jerusalem still meet. In 1992 representatives from the Palestine Liberation Organization and Israel met in the hotel where they began talks that led to the historic 1993 Oslo Peace Accord.

The Colony moved to the large house of a wealthy Arab landowner, Rabbah Husseini, outside the city walls in Sheikh Jarrah on the road to Nablus. Part of the building was used as a hostel for visitors from Europe and America. A small farm developed with animals, a butchery, a dairy, a bakery, a carpenter's shop, and a smithy. The economy was supplemented by a shop selling photographs, craft items and archaeological artifacts. The American Colonists were embraced by the Jewish and Palestinian communities for their good works, among them, teaching in both Muslim and Jewish schools.
Photography
Around 1900, Elijah Meyers, a member of the American Colony, began taking photographs of places and events in and around the city of Jerusalem. Meyers's work eventually expanded into a full-fledged photographic division within the Colony, including Hol Lars (Lewis) Larsson and G. Eric Matson, who later renamed the effort as the Matson Photographic Service. Their interest in archeological artifacts (such as the Lion Tower in Tripoli pictured here), and the detail of their photographs, led to widespread interest in their work by archeologists. The collection was later donated to the Library of Congress.

Carlos Betancourt (born San Juan, Puerto Rico 1966) is an American multi-disciplinary artist. His artworks explore issues of memory, and his own experiences, while also dwelling in issues of nature, the environment and matters of beauty, identity and communication. He has worked as a curator, furniture designer and has collaborated in with Louis Vuitton as well as on architectural and site-specific private and public commissions with architect Alberto Latorre.
Betancourt artwork is in part inspired by his relationship with nature as well as by the diverse cultures and history of the Caribbean basin, Florida and the Americas. Peter C. Jones is a fine art photographer, documentary film director, publication consultant, producer, and author. He has organized more than one hundred exhibitions throughout the United States and Europe and produced more than sixty books. Born and raised in New York City, he graduated from the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) where he studied privately with Harry Callahan. Jones is President of the Josef and Yaye Breitenbach Foundation originating twenty-eight one-person exhibitions and ten books. He has served as a member of the Board of Fellows at The Center For Creative Photography. Jones is also a former consultant to The Philadelphia Museum of Art, Aperture and the Estate of Paul Strand.
In 2004, Nazraeli Press published Sweep Out Cottage, a compilation of photographs made in and around a house known as the Four Winds in Little Compton, Rhode Island. He has showed at KMR Arts Gallery and at Bonni Benrubi Gallery. His photos are in many private and public collections.
A Rising Tide of Silence was Jones’s first documentary production. The film explores the life and international influence of Father Thomas Keating who introduced Centering Prayer to a wide western audience. A Rising Tide of Silence premiered at the 2013 Aspen Film Festival and won the Audience Choice Award. Peter Jones has spoken at numerous screenings most recently at Harvard and at the Dalai Lama's Center For Ethics at MIT.Jones is the author of The Changing Face of America (Prentice Hall Press) and the co-author of three other books including Social Gardens (Stewart, Tabori & Chang). His photographs, articles, and op-ed pieces have been published by The New York Times Magazine, Connoisseur, Smart Money, Aperture, and The Providence Journal.
Peter C. Jones lives in Los Angeles with his wife, Charlotte M. Frieze, who is a Fellow of the American Society of Landscape Architects and the Garden Editor of House & Garden magazine.
