R.P. Overmyer (American, 1948-2010). An original oil painting (this might be acrylic) on canvas. A figural Pop Art work painted in an abstract whimsical style, featuring an interior scene of bloody murder, with corpse figure, bullet riddled wall and chair, picture frame with photograph, and additional forms. Artist signature to bottom R.P. OVERMYER. The artist was a syndicated cartoonist and creator of the popular strip, "Hollywood Dog." Work Size: 29.5 x 39.5 in. Dimensions: 30 X 40.25 X 1.75 in. Overmyer was a longtime LA-based cartoonist and designer. His newspaper clients included LA Weekly and the San Jose Metro Weekly; his animation employers included Fox and Universal Studios. He may be best known for his Hollywood Dog feature, which was nationally syndicated in its current, political-cartoon illustration art form since I believe January 2006 and included the Los Angeles Times among its clients. The feature was originally a comic strip for the Los Angeles Reader, was trademarked for t-shirt production in 1989, and was briefly the basis for a television show in the post-Simpsons 1990s. That show appeared in 1993 and feature Simpsons utility performer Hank Azaria as the voice of the title character. Included in the Victor Salmones book published in 1991 "A Sense of Human". This large sculpture 76" almost two meters tall 196cm. Victor Salmones (1937-1989) was the most widely known sculptor living and working in Mexico during his lifetime. His sculptures won him universal acclaim and are held in the collections of museums, corporations, cities, universities and private collectors in some 30 countries. During his career, he was highly sought after and increasingly involved in the execution of commissions for major public works around the world. Salmones developed his love and talent for creating sculptures by working with clay in high school. He attended the Instituto de Bellas Artes where he was an apprentice to the Bauhaus master, Hoffman. He was trained to use the exacting, age-old lost wax method of casting and worked principally in bronze. The artist Loren Munk (born 1951) is primarily known for his YouTube nickname James Kalm as an uploader of videos about New York exhibitions, amongst others. He presents himself as a maker of contemporary paintings for several decades and of cubist paintings of urban imagery. Munk has received accolades for his drawings and mosaics. He differs from traditional mosaic artists by the manner in which he incorporates glass into his decorative paintings. His unique and innovative use of materials such as mirror, gold-leaf and glass mosaic affirmed him as a founding force of Kitsch Art and a leading member of New York Neo-Expressionism. Munk's work debuted in SoHo in 1981 with a double show at J. Fields Gallery and Gabrielle Bryers. Since then, he has overseen an international career. In addition to exhibiting in Brazil, France, Germany and the United States, Munk has received national and overseas, public and private commissions. He is well represented in important collections throughout Europe, South and North America and the Middle East. This is a large colorful, bold, vibrant original oil painting on canvas, hand signed and dated 1989. It is titled Crete. Joan Thorne (1943-) is a New York artist nationally and internationally recognized. A third generation Abstract Expressionist woman artist who has exhibited works over the past 30 years. Her art has been shown in the Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington, DC, the Whitney Museum’s Annual Exhibition, the Grand Palais in Paris, and Barbara Rose’s seminal exhibition American Painting: The Eighties at New York University’s Grey Gallery. Her recent shows in New York City have been reviewed by the New York Times, Art in America, ArtNews and The New Criterion among others. Her work has been compared to Elizabeth Murray work. It is colorful and has a 1980's, Memphis Milano feel to it. Thorne grew up in Greenwich Village. Her mother was a Ukrainian immigrant from a musical family, who became an English teacher; her father, a surgeon. Recognizing their daughter’s artistic talents early, they enrolled her at age six in the Little Red Schoolhouse on Bleecker Street in Greenwich Village. Founded in 1921 by Elisabeth Irwin, a pioneer in educational reform, the school has continued to maintain its reputation as a progressive and nurturing catalyst for creative children. Pete Seeger, the folk singer, performed there so frequently that Thorne remembered him as if he were one of the teachers. In 1971, Thorne met Faith Ringgold (b. 1930) and joined her as a teacher at the Women’s House of Detention on Rikers Island in a new program called “Art without Walls–Free Space.” The program, which had been born from the civil rights movement, was aimed at enriching the lives of the inmates. Thorne and her peers came of age struggling against sexism in the art establishment and its attendant lack of exhibition opportunities for women. Since 1985, this issue had been loudly exposed by the public protests of the Guerrilla Girls, whose members remain a well-kept secret. Her painting has been included in two Whitney Museum Biennials and various other museum group exhibitions both in the United States, Europe and Latin America. She has had numerous one person shows in galleries such as: Sideshow Gallery New York, Fischbach Gallery, New York City, Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington D.C., Willard Gallery, New York, Graham & Sons Gallery, New York, The Clocktower, New York City, and the National Arts Club among others. JOVAN OBICAN Cannes, France, b. 1918, d. 1986 Jovan Obican (1918-1986) artist, painter, sculpture and mosaic ceramic artisan was born in Cannes, France, to his Yugoslavian parents. From childhood on, Jovan practically devoted himself to art, scratching designs into the dirt when paper was unavailable. He trained with many recognized teachers and with many styles. He finished his training, imbued with the spirit of his native country, the people, their legends, and their philosophy. It has been said that his work has a "timeless quality" and a naive, folk art, outsider art brut quality, child-like primitive style. Obican is identified with his style the world over, a style that is simple yet sophisticated; child-like yet masterfully adult; a style that tells a story with psychological, philosophical or sociological overtones. His funny little people are always colorful, full of spirit, living with music and birds to bring them happiness. Best known for his depictions of folklore and traditional costumes rendered in a playful, childlike style and for his happy Jewish wedding scenes. He often used bright colors and black outlines in his renderings of figures and animals, giving his work an illustration-like quality. Thematically, the artist’s work is similar to Marc Chagall and Jean Dubuffet for its dreamlike images and so-called naïve style of painting. Over the course of his career, the artist maintained a studio in Boca Raton, Florida and Dubrovnik, Croatia—part of former Yugoslavia— where he developed an interest in Eastern Europe’s Jewish culture. Many of his mature works depict Jewish traditions and ceremonies, including traditional Jewish weddings, the dancing of the Hora, and traditional music. There is a display of his works in his former Dubrovnik studio. His style is a unique conglomerate of tradition, history, legends, heroes, old customs and folklore. It is a self-standing style, recognizable, cheerful, whimsical and a happy creation. Naïve art is any form of visual art that is created by a person who lacks the formal education and training that a professional artist undergoes (in anatomy, art history, technique, perspective, ways of seeing). Unlike folk art, naïve art does not necessarily evince a distinct cultural context or tradition. Naïve art is recognized, and often imitated, for its childlike simplicity and frankness. Paintings of this kind typically have a flat rendering style with a rudimentary expression of perspective. One particularly influential painter of "naïve art" was Henri Rousseau (1844–1910), a French Post-Impressionist who was discovered by Pablo Picasso. Naïve art is often seen as outsider art that is by someone without formal (or little) training or degree. While this was true before the twentieth century, there are now academies for naïve art. Naïve art is now a fully recognized art genre, represented in art galleries worldwide. Museums devoted to naïve art now exist in Kecskemét, Hungary; Riga, Latvia; Jaen, Spain; Rio de Janeiro, Brasil; Vicq France and Paris. "Primitive art" is another term often applied to art by those without formal training, but is historically more often applied to work from certain cultures that have been judged socially or technologically "primitive" by Western academia, such as Native American, sub saharan African or Pacific Island art (see Tribal art). This is distinguished from the self-conscious, "primitive" inspired movement primitivism. Another term related to (but not completely synonymous with) naïve art is folk art. There also exist the terms "naïvism" and "primitivism" which are usually applied to professional painters working in the style of naïve art (like Paul Gauguin, Mikhail Larionov, Paul Klee). At all events, naive art can be regarded as having occupied an "official" position in the annals of twentieth-century art since - at the very latest - the publication of the Der Blaue Reiter, an almanac in 1912. Wassily Kandinsky and Franz Marc, who brought out the almanac, presented 6 reproductions of paintings by le Douanier' Rousseau (Henri Rousseau), comparing them with other pictorial examples. However, most experts agree that the year that naive art was "discovered" was 1885, when the painter Paul Signac became aware of the talents of Henri Rousseau and set about organizing exhibitions of his work in a number of prestigious galleries. The Earth Group (Grupa Zemlja) were Croatian artists, architects and intellectuals active in Zagreb from 1929 to 1935. The group included the painters Krsto Hegedušić, Edo Kovačević, Omer Mujadžić, Kamilo Ružička, Ivan Tabaković, and Oton Postružnik, the sculptors Antun Augustinčić, Frano Kršinić, and the architect Drago Ibler. A term applied to Yugoslav (Croatian) naive painters working in or around the village of Hlebine, near the Hungarian border, from about 1930. Ces McCully, Australian, b. 1982 Untitled (Altar), 2021 Signed and dated CES '21 on the reverse Oil on canvas 39 1/2 x 31 1/2 inches (100.3 x 80 cm) Unframed Ces McCully (born 1982, Melbourne, Australia) Now based in Southern France, Ces McCully is a contemporary Australian artist, whose work is collected and shown internationally. ​ Rachael McCully's oeuvre includes text based pieces which utilize chance in color relationships, and abstract geometric paintings which often have a meditative effect; both sharing autobiographical elements with a reflection on society, and a minimalist approach. "I dabbled in painting, photography, writing and design over the years," before settling more firmly on painting. Feminist icons Cindy Sherman and Barbara Kruger were amongst her inspirations as she began studying art. However now Rachael McCully-Kerwick is forging her own visual language in the south of France. Ces McCully explores themes of female relationships and identity through minimalistic forms, geometric compositions and repeated tribal motifs. Her work, which moves between text pieces and abstract painting, is collected and shown internationally. In McCully’s typography works, she uses vivid colours to create stylised and geometric typographical pieces, divulging secret, and often brutally honest thoughts. Here for your consideration is a very interesting figurative painting by the well know American artist, Ben Stahl. Dedicated to Helen lower left and signed and dated lower left by the artist, 1978. Provenance: Saint Petersburg, Florida estate. Benjamin Albert Stahl (September 7, 1910 – October 19, 1987) was an American artist, illustrator and author. He showed precocious talent, winning a scholarship to the Art Institute of Chicago at age twelve. His artwork appeared in the International Watercolor Show at the Art Institute when he was sixteen. He later taught at the Art Institute, as well as at the American Academy of Art, the Art Students League of New York, Brooklyn's Pratt Institute and at various universities. Stahl won many prizes, including the Saltus Gold Medal of the National Academy of Design. Myriam Bat-Yosef currently lives and works in Paris. In 1933, her family fleeing the Nazi Holocaust, Miriam Bat-Yosef emigrates to Palestine and settles in Jaffa. In 1936, she suffers a family tragedy, her father, militant Zionist, is called to fight, still recovering from an operation of appendicitis. The incision will become infected, antibiotics did not exist yet, and her father will die in the hospital after 9 months of suffering. Henriette Wyeth Hurd (1907 – 1997) was an American artist noted for her portraits and still life paintings. The eldest daughter of illustrator N.C. Wyeth, she studied painting with her father and brother Andrew Wyeth at their home and studio in Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania. Henrietta Wyeth was born in Wilmington, Delaware, into an artistic family. Wyeth was the eldest of the five children of noted illustrator N.C. Wyeth and his wife Carolyn Bockius. Her siblings Carolyn and Andrew also became artists, and all three studied with their father. Andrew Wyeth became the most well-known artist of this family. Henriette contracted polio at age 3, which altered her health and use of her right hand. As a result, she learned to draw with her left hand and paint with her right. She grew up on the family farm in Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania, and attended local Quaker schools. She and her siblings were eventually homeschooled because their father distrusted the public school system. She began formal art lessons with her father at age 11, making charcoal studies and geometric shapes. A child prodigy, at age 13 Wyeth was enrolled in the Normal Arts School in Boston, Massachusetts. The next year, in 1921, she entered the Boston Museum of Art Academy. Two years later she moved to Philadelphia to study painting at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. By age 16, she was well known as a portraitist and received commissions for paintings of Wilmington residents. Deeply influenced by her father's unique realistic style, she rejected early 20th-century painting styles such as Impressionism and Cubism. She was also socially and politically conservative. As a result, later in life she rejected the progressive movements of the 1960s and 1970s, including the women's movement. She often criticized television and modern culture. At age 21, in 1929 Wyeth married artist Peter Hurd, a fellow student at the Pennsylvania Academy and her father's apprentice. His work is about the exploration of color and light through abstraction, with tonal gradations that infuse them with a meditative quality. During the eighties and nineties, he painted large monochromatic color field canvases with tonal gradations and soft edges that infuse them with a meditative quality and a sense of movement. When illuminated they become glowing surfaces of color and light. His artistic background and work link him closely with the first generation abstract expressionists of the New York School. Major influences include Jackson Pollock and Mark Rothko, and his mentors, Peter Busa and Esteban Vicente, whom he met and befriended during the eighties while living and painting in East Hampton. During the nineties, while living and working in Santa Fe, New Mexico, Novak initiated a project called "Light Emanations", in which he created digital computerized programs of changing light levels and configurations on a selection of his large paintings, dramatically illustrating the effect of light changes on color perception. Novak's body of work is extensive and include painting on canvas, panel and paper as well as monotypes, drawings, assemblages, mixed media and prints. He has often worked in series, focusing on a particular medium for years. Among these are "Meditations" (color pencil drawings), "Voices" and "Voices 2" (color aquatint etchings), "Echoes" (painting assemblage with minerals) and "Colors" (350 miniature panel paintings). In recent years his paintings have become more gestural, often with musical allusions. His work bears a relationship to the Light & Space Movement and Minimalism artists James Turrell, Larry Bell, Craig Kauffman, Billy Al Bengston, Peter Alexander, Laddie John Dill, Lita Albuquerque. these are also anticipative of the aquatint etching works by Anish Kapoor. Novak's work is in many public and private collections, including numerous museum collections. He spent his last years living in Palm Springs.
