Marty Greenbaum (1934-2020) was an American painter, mixed media assemblage and book artist. Greenbaum is best known for his mixed media assemblage, painting and artist books. Greenbaum appeared in three films: Hallelujah the Hills in 1963 by Adolfas Mekas, Life Dances On, in 1980 by Robert Frank, and The Present in 1996 by Robert Frank. Between 1962 and 1965 he took part in happenings by Allan Kaprow and experimental dance by Yvonne Rainer. Greenbaum authored his own happenings, i.e. Coney Island Carny, including artists such as Eddie Barton, Remy Charlip, Paul Kaplow, Paul Krasner, Al Hanson, Ed Blair, Allen Ginsberg, John Hammond, Eddie Rabkin, Lou Gossett, Renee Renee, Allan Kaprow, Phyllis Yampolsky, Thomas Hoving, Jackie Ferrara, Peter Schumann, Jim Bell, Bill Marshall, Corla Lopez, Bruce Waite, and Mark di Suvero, as well as organizing the Hall of Issues with Phyllis Yampolsky at The Judson Memorial Church. Books as Objects "Greenbaum, an early conceptualist, burned books in the 1960s, exhibiting the remains as 'corpses.' Today, he makes fetishistic notebooks filled with colored paper and scribbled equations, accretions of feathers and Rhoplex." "Marty Greenbaum and Barton Lidice Benes destroy texts to create sculpture: Benes 'Bound Book,' a literal rope and wax imprisonment, and Greenbaum's 'Cutting Up,' a mixed media paste over of muted colors." Arie Azene, Israeli painter, born in Germany, 1934 Arie (Eisman) Azene was born in Hamburg, Germany. He immigrated to the Land of Israel with his parents soon after birth. In 1958, after studying art in Paris, he settled on Kibbutz Tzova in the Judean Hills, where he lived for 28 years. He spent 1968-1970 in France, England and Germany. In 1984, he moved to Jerusalem. Stylistically, Azene was influenced by the New Horizons group to which he was exposed during his studies at the Avni Institute in Tel Aviv. Jean Souverbie was a figurative painter of the French school, known for known for his cubist and modern interpretations of classical nudes, in addition to seascapes and still lifes. Born in Boulogne-Billancourt in 1891, It was a meeting with Nabis group artists Maurice Denis and Paul Sérusier in 1908 that influenced Souverbie to become an artist. An interest in the work of the classical painter Nicolas Poussin at the start of his artistic career would turn out to be an enduring one, the influence of which can be seen throughout Souverbie’s oeuvre. Souverbie enrolled at the Académie Ranson in 1916, where he befriended Pierre Bonnard, Edouard Vuillard, and Félix Edouard Vallotton. Souverbie's art style is best described as a distinctive blend of Synthetic Cubism and Classicism (also referred to as Neo-Greek or a return to order). Initially influenced by the Post Impressionist, Symbolists and Fauvist Nabi artists like Maurice Denis In the 1920’s, Souverbie turned toward cubism after the discovery of Georges Braque’s work, but the decisive turning point was reached in 1925, when he exhibited along the Section d’or at the Vavin Raspail gallery and met Charles Gleizes, André Lhote, Louis Marcoussis, and many other members of the Parisian avant-garde including Pablo Picasso who he deeply admired. This master, who had become a friend, deeply influenced Souverbie’s artistic conceptions. His nudes became more and more geometrical, their sculptural bodies echoed cubists icons of the Spanish painter. Souverbie went on to have a show of 54 Cubist paintings at the Bernheim-Jeune Gallery in 1929, which solidified his reputation as an important figure in the Parisian art scene of the 1920s and 1930s. By the 1930’s Souverbie had become renowned. He turned to the realisation of monumental works (commissions) which made him famous around the world. In 1937, he was amongst artists chosen to decorate the new Palais de Chaillot, built for the Universal Exhibition to replace the Palais du Trocadéro. Jean Souverbie taught at the Académie Julian and the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris during the 1940s. Among his best-known students are Philippe de La Hogue-Rey, Philippe Lejeune, Jean Le Merdy, Yves de Saint-Front, Georges Visconti and Pierrette Bloch. He was an important mentor figure for Francoise Gilot during her early career as she developed her own artistic style. Israel has had a Vibrant Folk Art, Naive art scene for a long time now, artists like Yisrael Paldi, Nahum Guttman, Reuven Rubin and even Yefim Ladyzhensky had naive periods. The most well know of the strict naive artists are Shalom of Safed, Irene Awret, Gabriel Cohen, Natan Heber, Michael Falk and Kopel Gurwin. Naïve art is any form of visual art that is created by a person who lacks the formal education and training that a professional artist undergoes (in anatomy, art history, technique, perspective, ways of seeing). Unlike folk art, naïve art does not necessarily evince a distinct cultural context or tradition. Naïve art is recognized, and often imitated, for its childlike simplicity and frankness. Paintings of this kind typically have a flat rendering style with a rudimentary expression of perspective. One particularly influential painter of "naïve art" was Henri Rousseau (1844–1910), a French Post-Impressionist who was discovered by Pablo Picasso. Naïve art is often seen as outsider art that is by someone without formal (or little) training or degree. While this was true before the twentieth century, there are now academies for naïve art. Naïve art is now a fully recognized art genre, represented in art galleries worldwide. Museums devoted to naïve art now exist in Kecskemét, Hungary; Riga, Latvia; Jaen, Spain; Rio de Janeiro, Brasil; Vicq France and Paris. "Primitive art" is another term often applied to art by those without formal training, but is historically more often applied to work from certain cultures that have been judged socially or technologically "primitive" by Western academia, such as Native American, sub saharan African or Pacific Island art (see Tribal art). This is distinguished from the self-conscious, "primitive" inspired movement primitivism. Another term related to (but not completely synonymous with) naïve art is folk art. There also exist the terms "naïvism" and "primitivism" which are usually applied to professional painters working in the style of naïve art (like Paul Gauguin, Mikhail Larionov, Paul Klee). At all events, naive art can be regarded as having occupied an "official" position in the annals of twentieth-century art since - at the very latest - the publication of the Der Blaue Reiter, an almanac in 1912. Wassily Kandinsky and Franz Marc, who brought out the almanac, presented 6 reproductions of paintings by le Douanier' Rousseau (Henri Rousseau), comparing them with other pictorial examples. However, most experts agree that the year that naive art was "discovered" was 1885, when the painter Paul Signac became aware of the talents of Henri Rousseau and set about organizing exhibitions of his work in a number of prestigious galleries. The Earth Group (Grupa Zemlja) were Croatian artists, architects and intellectuals active in Zagreb from 1929 to 1935. Lena Gurr (1897–1992), was an American woman artist who made paintings, prints, and drawings During the course of her career Gurr's compositions retained emotional content as they evolved from a naturalistic to a semi-abstract cubist style. Born into a Russian-Jewish Yiddish speaking immigrant family, she was the wife of Joseph Biel, also Russian-Jewish and an artist of similar genre and sensibility. Gurr used Lena Gurr as her professional name. After marrying Joseph Biel she was sometimes referred to as Lena Gurr Biel. Biel had been born in Grodno, Poland (later absorbed into Russia) and had lived in England, France, and Australia before coming to New York. An artist, he specialized in landscape paintings and silkscreen printing as well as photography. He studied art at the Russian Academy in Paris. After immigrating to the United States, he studied under George Grosz at the Arts Students League. Gurr was born in Brooklyn and, apart from brief stays in Manhattan and in Paris, lived there her whole life. This painting bears the influence of Lyonel Feininger an influential German American artist. Gurr began studying art at a young age. In 1919 she studied painting and printmaking at the Educational Alliance Art School and between 1920 and 1922 she won a scholarship to attend the Art Students League where she took classes with John Sloan and Maurice Sterne. In 1926 and 1928 Gurr participated in group shows at the Whitney Studio Club in Greenwich Village and in 1928 she also participated in the 12th annual exhibition of the Society of Independent Artists at the Waldorf Roof in New York. (Reviewing this show, Helen Appleton Read, the critic for the Brooklyn Daily Eagle, said "I made three discoveries on my first visit, Thomas Nagel, Eugenie McEvoy and Lena Gurr with two figure compositions which have something of Marie Laurencin or Helene Perdriat quality of naive sophistication.") The Waldorf Roof was a set of rooms on the top floor of the Waldorf Astoria Hotel, one of which had glass sides and a glass roof. The rooms were used for concerts, dances, benefits, and exhibitions.From 1929 to 1931 Gurr took a leave of absence from her teaching position to travel in France with Joseph Biel, an artist whom she had met while studying at the Art Students League. Examples range from the most syrupy sentimentality to extremes of moral and intellectual confrontation. For me, the creative process is, on the simplest level, an aesthetic puzzle. Elements of the puzzle include contrast, color, visual texture, graphic pattern, and in some recent work, a simple cryptic symbolism. I have never been particularly interested in lyric or pictorial content, and though some of my work does contain undeniable spatial illusion, even that tends to be a by-product rather than a goal of the primary pursuit: the balance of light and dark, pure color and organic neutrals, energy and calm, strong pattern and subtle field. Having grown up in an environment of contemporary architecture, I have always valued the classic modern synthesis of form and function exemplified by the Bauhaus movement of the early 20th century. Hence, the simplest solutions are often the most satisfying. Obviously, the modernist ideal of efficiency in form and function requires that method of execution be as well adapted to the aesthetic goal as the visual language itself.
