Modernist beach scene; signed lower right; image size is 11.5 x 8.5 inches, framed it measures Ruth Gikow (January 6, 1915 Ukraine - 1982 New York City) was an Important American Jewish woman visual artist known primarily for her work as a genre painter. Her paintings often depict human figures interacting with an urban environment. Ruth Gikow was born in 1915 in the Ukraine. Her father, Boris, was a photographer and her mother was named Lena. In 1920 she emigrated to New York City due to civil war and pogroms against the Jewish community. The pilgrimage took around two years. Once in New York City, the Gikow family found themselves in poverty, rather than the middle-class comfort they enjoyed in Ukraine. Ruth Gikow's skill was prominent even in youth, as she excelled in drawing in elementary school and entered Washington Irving High School at age thirteen in which she furthered her art prowess. Later, she studied at the Cooper Union Art School, where she studied under school director Austin Purvis, Jr. and regional artist John Steuart Curry. In her second year of Art School, she was awarded a scholarship which she used to work with fellow painter Raphael Soyer. She joined the New York City WPA Federal Art Project in 1935, where she was allowed to dedicate herself to her artwork full-time. In 1939, inspired by the muralists Diego Rivera and José Clemente Orozco, she applied and later won a commission to paint murals for Bronx Hospital, Rockefeller Center and the New York World's Fair. After the events of Pearl Harbor and once the Federal Arts Project was abandoned, Gikow's murals were sought after by New York department stores wishing to commission wall paintings. Gikow became disillusioned with mural painting due to the commercial aspect of these commissions. Joan Kahn (USA 1953-) grew up in New York City; Princeton, New Jersey; and Vermont; in an environment that patronized the arts. At home her father, a professor, and mother, a state economist and homemaker, collected nineteenth and twentieth century drawings and prints, Middle eastern rugs, and ceramics, pewter, and old tools. Her grandfather, Max Westfield, was an academically trained portrait painter and her great uncle was a well-known gallery owner and art dealer in pre-World War II Germany. One of the influential experiences of Joan’s youth was visiting her grandfather in his studio in Tennessee where the family had first immigrated. Growing up near New York, and spending a year in Paris during high school, provided formative visits to museums and galleries. Joan was academically talented in grade and high school, but after her father’s death during her first years at university she found herself concentrating on studio and history of art. Roberto Lauro is a British-Swiss Post War & Contemporary artist who was born in 1932. Roberto Lauro was born in 1932 in Gorey Harbor on the island of Jersey (Great Britain) the son of a Swiss mother, Rosa Ramseier, from Oberdiessbach / Emmental, Switzerland, and and Italian father Innocenzo Roberto Lauro, born in Mondovi, Italy. In 1941 he moved to Switzerland with his mother. 1949-1953 he lived in Gunten (Switzerland) where he did an Apprenticeship as a lithograph and offset printer and graphic designer in Thun. There he was introduced to the color theory of Johannes Itten by Hermann Oberli at the Bern School of Applied Arts. From 1953 to 1955 he worked as a fine art printer in Norway where he was influenced by the color theory of Edvard Munch. These works bears the influence of Russian artist Andre Lanskoy, Tachisme and the Cobra artists Karel Appel, Constant, Corneille, Christian Dotremont, Asger Jorn, and Joseph Noiret. In 1980 he begins his development of three-dimensional picture objects, Sculpture, detachment from the canvas, using metal as a support and play space for light and color. By 1981 he has turned full time to fine art. He spends the next years growing and developing his considerable talent. Inspired by classical music, the rhythm, mood and lightness of which form the basis for the large swings and loops of his colorfully lacquered metal and blown glass sculptures. These are "pensieri", thought sketches that capture the emotions in countless versions. There is something dance-like about his rotating sculptures. Everything becomes music and the rhythm of colors. In 1988, after exhibitions in Europe, he has his first exhibitions in Atlanta and San Francisco (USA), In 1989 he does his first glass and metal sculptures at the Roberto Niederer glassworks, Hergiswil (Switzerland). In 1992 has a retrospective exhibition in the Tan Gallery, Zurich, and the Eleonore Austerer Gallery, San Francisco. They Publish a catalogue raisonne, Eine Retrospektive, covering a 45 year career. In 1993 he creates A Retrospective, a unique sculpture in a table top form that contains his catalogue raisonne and an original lithograph. 1993–1995 he begins work on a number of large scale public outdoor commissions, including Light Columns for a Bank building, and a commission of a sculpture-fountain in Oetwil am See. In 2001 he creates a wall sculpture entitled "Color Poems of the Yearly Cycle. A linen bound book enclosed in a unique plexi display with a one - of a - kind metal and glass sculpture,containing 12 linocuts each printed in colors and signed. Roberto Lauro's sculptural work work is spontaneous and loaded with energy. The furrows, rifts, cracks and scars in the metal allow light to enter; it is then reflected back by the glass. His work is a clear statement of our times, uniting the intellect and the heart in search of the spiritual. Like the interplay of light and shadow, his sculpture combines fragile, transparent glass with solid, heavy iron. These colorful and luminous sculptures convey a powerful presence and emit vibrant positive energy. With their jagged exteriors and translucent cores, the spectacular sculptures created by the synergy of metal and glass are powerful - yet fragile. Lauro has created and mastered his own idiom and proven that through the artist sheer will and vision, seemingly incompatible materials such as iron and glass can indeed be combined. He studied at the National Academy of Design, The Art Students League, The Beaux-Arts Institute of Design, and with Charles Webster Hawthorne, founder of the Cape Cod School of Art in Provincetown. SCOTT KILGOUR (b. 1960): ELECTRIC LIGHT BULB Etched slate, 1992, signed ''Scott Kilgour'', titled and dated on the reverse. Provenance: Camilla and Earl McGrath Collection. Scott Kilgour is a British Postwar & Contemporary painter who was born in 1960. Their work was featured in several exhibitions at key galleries and museums, including the Elga Wimmer PCC and the Howl! Happening. Encouraged by the first curator of 20th Century Art at the Metropolitan Museum, Henry Geldzahler, to move to New York City in the early 80's, Kilgour experienced first hand the frenetic contemporary American art scene. By the end of the decade, after absorbing the eclectic New York sensibility, Scott's lines and curves had evolved due to contact with Pop Art, Minimalism, New Wave, Graffiti and modern dance. His work was further influenced by Edmund Carpenter, a prestigious anthropologist, who galvanized his interest in continuous line drawing and knotwork designs. Gallery exhibits in the ‘80s included 56 Bleecker Street Gallery, DIA Foundation and Holly Solomon Gallery. In the 90's, Kilgour would further expand his body of knot-work designs, embarking on a decade-long study exploring the spatial relationship of continuous line drawing in Scottish Celtic Interlace. Kilgour's linear style is grounded in Charles Rennie Mackintosh's Art Nouveau aesthetic. This exploratory culminated in a 1999 exhibition at the Mackintosh Museum, Glasgow School of Art, as part of the Glasgow UK City for Architecture & Design celebration. Currently, Scott is working on a botanical body of work inspired while drinking a glass of rose in Provence, surrounded by a blossoming white French rose garden. Flowers are an ideal subject for Scott’s linear execution, as no two images are the same based on rosette whorl and luminous petals radiating from a single node. Kilgour attended the Glasgow School of Art and has been featured in media outlets including Interview Magazine, New York Magazine and Elle Décor. "New York Exhibitions". 1965). His brightly-colored, light-infused, ornamental compositions bring together aspects of many modernist art movements including Fauvism, Impressionism, Symbolism, and abstraction. Della-Volpe first studied painting at the prestigious National Academy of Design before joining the Army during World War II. As a soldier, the artist saw action on Utah Beach, winning a Purple Heart, and his experiences undoubtedly affected his later artistic style. The Fauvist "coloristic exuberance" found in the works beginning in the mid 1960's, with their vibrant fuschias and yellows, seem to offset what could be an otherwise solemn tone to many of his works at the time. Upon his return from military service, Della-Volpe’s style evolved significantly. In the years following the second world war, his work was solemn, imbued with a quiet darkness. Over time, this darkness faded: by the 1950s, influenced by his time at the Art Students League, his oeuvre was overtaken by the tenants of Abstract Expressionism. Paintings from this period boast bold brushwork, energetic compositions, and strong color. Although the next decade saw Della-Volpe trade expressionist abstraction for figuration, his love of color continued to shine through his work.Della-Volpe took a teaching position as the first artist-in-residence at Bennett College in Millbrook, New York where he remained for 28 years, serving as chairman of the Art Department for most of that time. Obviously influenced by impressionism 's preoccupation with the treatment of light, Della-Volpe's own works have a "faultless tonal quality, with its sense of failing light—the areas of silvery gray deepening into rosy tans" (Arts Magazine. Moshe Vorobeichic received his initial artistic training in the early 1920s in Vilnius, Lithuania, where he studied painting, architecture, and photography. Marty Greenbaum (1934-2020) was an American painter, mixed media assemblage and book artist. Greenbaum is best known for his mixed media assemblage, painting and artist books. Greenbaum appeared in three films: Hallelujah the Hills in 1963 by Adolfas Mekas, Life Dances On, in 1980 by Robert Frank, and The Present in 1996 by Robert Frank. Between 1962 and 1965 he took part in happenings by Allan Kaprow and experimental dance by Yvonne Rainer. Greenbaum authored his own happenings, i.e. Coney Island Carny, including artists such as Eddie Barton, Remy Charlip, Paul Kaplow, Paul Krasner, Al Hanson, Ed Blair, Allen Ginsberg, John Hammond, Eddie Rabkin, Lou Gossett, Renee Renee, Allan Kaprow, Phyllis Yampolsky, Thomas Hoving, Jackie Ferrara, Peter Schumann, Jim Bell, Bill Marshall, Corla Lopez, Bruce Waite, and Mark di Suvero, as well as organizing the Hall of Issues with Phyllis Yampolsky at The Judson Memorial Church. Greenbaum had several teaching positions in the New York City public school system and was a member of the Creative Artists Public Service program twice, he also participated in various exhibitions with book objects. His work is in several public collections including The Art Institute of Chicago, Artists' Books, The Brooklyn Museum Collection, The Chrysler Museum, Norfolk, VA, Citibank, NYC, Colgate University, Hamilton, NY, Jacksonville Art Museum, Jacksonville, FL, Madison Art Center, Madison, WI, SUNY at New Paltz, NY and more. Books as Objects "Greenbaum, an early conceptualist, burned books in the 1960s, exhibiting the remains as 'corpses.' Today, he makes fetishistic notebooks filled with colored paper and scribbled equations, accretions of feathers and Rhoplex." "Marty Greenbaum and Barton Lidice Benes destroy texts to create sculpture: Benes 'Bound Book,' a literal rope and wax imprisonment, and Greenbaum's 'Cutting Up,' a mixed media paste over of muted colors." Some of his most notable artist books include: "Batman" 1963-67, "In '84 Returned in 2004". Two stories about Marty from James Pernotto: we met at William Weege print shop in 1974 when he drove out from NYC with Alan Shields and Paco Grande and I was a lithography printer hired to work with them. Alan recalled on the trip out that Marty was working on his altered books and putting airplane glue on the pages and lighting it with a match. Enough said. I printed for Marty. He is best known for his work in photorealism and abstract illusionism. The name Photorealism (also known as Hyperrealism or Superrealism) was coined in reference to those artists whose work depended heavily on photographs, which they often projected onto canvas allowing images to be replicated with precision and accuracy. The exactness was often aided further by the use of an airbrush, which was originally designed to retouch photographs. The movement came about within the same period and context as Conceptual art, Pop art, and Minimalism and expressed a strong interest in realism in art, over that of idealism and abstraction. The first Photo realists were Chuck Close, Don Eddy, Richard Estes, Ralph Goings, Robert Bechtle, Audrey Flack, Denis Peterson, Lowel Nesbitt and Malcolm Morley. Each began practicing some form of Photorealism around the same time, often utilizing different modes of application and techniques, and citing different inspirations for their work. However, for the most part they all worked independent from one another. For example, Chuck Close came of age at the height of Pop art and Andy Warhol's Factory, and was based out of SoHo in lower Manhattan.
