Listing is for UNFRAMED print. Inquire within for framing. Edition of 15. If the exhibition piece is sold or the customer orders a different print size, the photograph is produced upon purchase. Please allow two weeks for production. Shipping time depends on method of shipping. Price is subject to availability. The Robin Rice Gallery reserves the right to adjust this price depending on the current edition of the photograph. ABOUT: Every year, the gallery owner curates the show to best exemplify the 56 exhibited artists’ strengths and aesthetics, remaining cohesively linked by Robin’s extensive knowledge of her artists and of photography. “This is my favorite exhibit, even though it takes months to curate and a week to install,” says Robin. “It is my curatorial showcase.” From floor to ceiling, the walls of the gallery rooms are a mosaic of nearly a hundred photographs, their various sizes, color schemes and subject matter expertly laid out to fit together like the pieces of an eclectic puzzle. This year’s invitational image, “Beach Samba” by Patricia Heal, is a portrait of a woman in a large, orange-red sunhat, whose downward gaze obscures her face entirely. Blurring the line between photography and painting, the color palette and uniquely large grain pattern of the photograph is reminiscent of Georges Seurat’s pointillism...

ABOUT: The beauty of Tina West’s latest show lies in the maturity and wonder of her still lives. For every photo, West stages her scene with unique treasures from her vast collection. Allowing them to speak to her, rather than the opposite, each object is chosen not because of an image West is trying to recreate from her mind, but because of each object’s sheer attraction. The sharp subconscious connection West feels to her still life objects comes across strongly. This produces a magical end product that has both transformed and repurposed the photographed objects entirely. Though still lives are considered a classic image, West exemplifies a charming, experimental take that pushes the boundaries of the historical still life. His oblique compositions are a profusion of the quirky, the surreal, and the ambiguous, all of which are permeated by a haunting presence. Rather than presenting a factual reality, an illusion is fabricated to conjure the realms of our imagination. Clayton’s inspiration is primarily grounded in dreams, with references to notable artists such as Diane Arbus, George Hurrell, and Duane Michaels...

Dining Room
By Patricia Heal
Located in Hudson, NY
Listing is for UNFRAMED print. Inquire within for framing. Edition of 10. ABOUT: In her ninth solo show at the Robin Rice Gallery, veteran artist Patricia Heal documents her visual narrative of their enchanted home in upstate New York. Hidden within untouched forests lies Peabrook, a babbling brook running through the property. The classic architecture of the house is offset by uniquely quirky interiors designed by the English-born Patricia and her husband, Anthony Cotsifas, which generate an otherworldly existence within the estate. “Peabrook is my Neverland,” Heal states, in reference to J.M. Barrie’s Peter Pan. “It is a fictional place often described as a metaphor for eternal childhood.” Heal hopes that, with just a visit to the gallery and a little imagination, you, too, can see Peabrook. Her use of the large format, now-extinct Polaroid film for her black and white photographs, and the warm soft colors found in many of the other pieces of the collection, contribute to the sense of antiquity and fantasy surrounding Peabrook. The whimsical subject matter, including mythical creatures and extensive taxidermy, complete the “magical” representation of Heal’s home that she strove to depict. The simply framed 4” x 5”, 5” x 7” and 8” x 10” photographs sit within large mattes, in keeping with the classical quality of her images. “I really wanted to work in film again, and this project seemed the right one to do it with,” says Heal, who lists Sarah Moon and André Kertesz as artistic inspirations. The dark and mysterious invitational image, “Willow”, depicts a portrait of a hooded woman, her downward gaze partially obstructed by the soft branches of a fern from the surrounding garden. The earth-toned image contains the unpredictable streaked effect of developed instant film. In another image, entitled “Sitting Room”, we see a positive image of a film negative. Most notable is the hanging rhinoceros head towering impressively over two antique sitting chairs...

Judgement
By Victoria Goldman
Located in Hudson, NY
Listing is for UNFRAMED print. Inquire within for framing. Edition of 22. ABOUT: Victoria Goldman’s twenty-year-long fascination with Tarot has created a series of photographs based on the imagery and the mythology behind the ancient Tarot cards. Each image in the collection is inspired by and named after one of the 22 major archetypes of the Tarot. While photographing and teaching yoga and meditation in India, Hawaii, and throughout Europe, Goldman always made sure to carry a Tarot deck in her backpack. She views Tarot as a tool for personal elevation, helping her direct her focus and better understand her psyche. The collection’s soft focus and figurative emphasis is reminiscent of the work of Francesca Woodman or Julia Margaret Cameron, whom Goldman cites as personal artistic inspirations. The concept behind the exhibition was long thought-out; while some pieces date as recently as two months prior to the exhibition opening, others date as far back as 1999 or 2000. Shot primarily with vintage Polaroid and film with a twin lens Rolleiflex camera, the dark, moody, mythological images recall a classical tone that mirrors the timelessness of the cards themselves. The invitational image, entitled “Wheel of Fortune”, depicts a young woman in a glittering gown, her backside facing the viewer and her body positioned to spin a large carnival wheel hidden in the darkness of the photograph. The high-contrast nature of the image abstracts the gown, morphing the glitter on the dress into drops of light that shine through the dark air. The slender young woman in “Fortune” can be found in several of the collection’s photographs, depicting not just Lady Luck, as in the invitational image, but also the Emperor, the Devil, and even the World. Says Goldman, “I chose to use one main model for this show to speak to the fact that all of the characters that Tarot contains are within each one of us.” This model appears again as the inspiration for “Judgement”, a color portrait portraying the woman surrounded by furs, with a brass crown on her head and a large magnifying glass held against her face. The magnifying glass distorts the model’s delicate features, expanding her nose and bright blue eyes, while sky and tree branches reflect brightly upon the glass itself. Victoria Goldman has been exhibiting her photography on both a national and international scale for over 25 years. Goldman was born in New York City, attended Sarah Lawrence College in Bronxville, and has lived in Santa Fe, NM for the last 15 years. Her work has been featured on numerous book and CD covers, and has been published in editorials such as Healthy Living Magazine, Yoga Journal, and The Magazine. Goldman likes to describe her photography as “visual poetry”, referencing Mary Oliver...

Please allow two weeks for production. Shipping time depends on method of shipping. Price is subject to availability. The Robin Rice Gallery reserves the right to adjust this price depending on the current edition of the photograph. ABOUT: In Gordon’s third exhibition, his remarkable capacity for discovery and self-described “pathological curiosity” makes for an entirely unpredictable series of photographs, while the small size of the gelatin silver prints emphasizes their detailed nature and enhances the mysterious quality generated by his choice in cameras (namely, the increasingly popular Holga film camera). Stettinius’ wry sense of humor, references to popular culture, and use of kitschy subject matter permeate the entire black and white exhibition. The invitational image, “Yoda’s Garden”, is a perfect emblem of the exhibition’s mischievously comedic representation of Americana. In this image, a scarecrow proudly stands at the center of a growing cornfield, a gingham dress wrapping its body and a mask of the popular Star Wars character “Yoda” serving as its head. Although the references to both Star Wars and The Wizard of Oz may appear staged, Stettinius’ photography is anything but. Stettinius frequently finds inspiration in road trips, generating an aesthetic with the satirical playfulness of David Graham or Ralph Meatyard. This spontaneous, anthropological approach to photography can be seen in several of the pieces in Stettinius’ collection. This is perhaps most notably found in “Fast Money...

ABOUT: In this exhibition, Lance Clayton’s aquatic, figurative photographs contain an attention to detail that leaves the viewer constantly discovering new information within them. His oblique compositions are a profusion of the quirky, the surreal, and the ambiguous, all of which are permeated by a haunting presence. Rather than presenting a factual reality, an illusion is fabricated to conjure the realms of our imagination. The invitational image, “Swim”, is an illustrative shot of a man doing the butterfly stroke, his back to the viewer with arms powerfully extended across the frame, as if to embrace the open, infinite skies above him. The grainy quality of the piece is created using a dark room technique in which tissue is layered upon the photograph, creating an allover ethereal atmosphere reminiscent of Edward Steichen’s early work. Another image, “Rungs”, photographed in Lake Okeechobee, Florida, shows a rusty silver pool ladder descending into a vista of midnight blue water. The highlights and reflections in the water, however, resemble the night sky and thereby disorient the viewer’s perspective. The piece entitled "Kim, Orem, Utah” expresses some of Clayton’s more hauntingly sensual themes. The photograph displays a woman floating in a pool, her darkly lit face above the water and her serpentine body below. The sinister, yet lyrical, mood of the photograph is largely emblematic of the entire collection exhibited. Clayton’s inspiration is primarily grounded in dreams, with references to notable artists such as Diane Arbus, George Hurrell, and Duane Michaels...

ABOUT: Since the inception of Sunshine & Noir in 2001, Alleman has shot extensively in Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco and other American cities. In his latest iteration Alleman takes a detour beyond the frenetic landscapes of urban America into Paris - playfully guiding the viewer through a simultaneously familiar and foreign geography. In the exhibition, square and panoramic landscapes and iconic landmarks stretch across the gallery, where Alleman creates intrigue by re-expressing instantly recognizable subjects. Images with blurred, vignetted edges epitomize his surrealist style, haunting throughout the series. His artful mastery at capturing movement is seen in the invitational image, San Fernando Valley...
