Roy Lichtenstein's works were often inspired by comic characters. They were angsty women, often appearing to be in distress. In this particular work, a beautiful, fraught woman with a furrowed brow grasps a telephone in both hands as she says "Ohh ... Alright ..." Lichtenstein lets us imagine the back story - and what might happen next. Kaplan's sculpture is a direct reference to this Lictenstein's iconic pop art painting of 1964.

Nick Weddell is a sculptor from Austin, Texas. He received a Bachelor of Fine Arts in ceramics from Texas State University (2016) and a Master of Fine Arts from the New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University (2019). Weddell creates metamorphosed versions of everyday objects ranging from cups to armchairs in order to catalyze a celebration of that which is and a challenge to seek that which could be. Weddell’s work is an arbiter of progress, a wrecking ball of convention, and above all a harbinger of joy.
In 2019, Nick Weddell was a visiting artist at the Center for Contemporary Ceramics at California State University Long Beach and was a resident artist in Versailles, France. I constructed this piece from the setters I used to fire the ceramic pieces of another sculpture along with some of the glaze test tiles. When I saw these "scraps" sitting together there was a visual harmony that suggested a new use for them.
