Ansonia Pair of Silver 5-Light Candelabra from Aesthetic Movement 19th Century
By Ansonia Clock Company
Located in New York, NY
Pair of Ansonia silver-plated 5-light candelabra in a style reminiscent of the Aesthetic Movement and from the 19th century. They measure 20'' in height by 11 1/2'' from arm to arm and appear to be unmarked. The Ansonia Clock Company was a clock manufacturing business founded in Ansonia, Connecticut, in 1851, as a subsidiary of the Ansonia Brass Company by Phelps and two Bristol, Connecticut, clockmakers, Theodore Terry and Franklin C. Andrews. Terry & Andrews were the largest clock manufacturers in Bristol, with more than 50 employees using 58 tons of brass in the production of about 25,000 clocks in 1849. The company has produced hundreds of different clock models, including Gingerbread, Porcelain, and Crystal Regulator styles. Ansonia clocks were exhibited at the U.S. Centennial exhibition in Philadelphia in 1876. In 1877 the clock company purchased a factory in New York and moved most of its production there after being spun off from the brass company. Henry J. Davies of Brooklyn, himself a clockmaker, inventor and case designer, joined the newly reconstituted company as one of its founders. As President, he is thought to have been largely responsible for the figurine clocks, swing clocks...

Marvelous Pair of 19th C. French Ormolu Four Arm Candelabras, Signed P. Canaux
By Paul Canaux and Company 1
Located in New York, NY
A Marvelous Pair of 19th century French Ormolu Four-Arm Candelabras, Signed Paul Canaux. Paul Canaux was an incredible jeweler and silversmith, and would produce his pieces in 30 rue des Francs-Bourgeois in Paris. He originally worked for the great silversmith and plater Joseph Mégemond. Following his career with Mégemond on August 9th, 1888 he placed his own hallmark. He was a made an array of products, which included silverware, cutlery, tea sets, centerpieces, candelabras as well as many other silver and gilt-bronze objects of the highest quality. His maker’s hallmark was struck in 1892 and they changed the name to "Paul Canaux et Cie". In the 5 Generations of our business, these are some of the greatest candelabras we have ever had the pleasure of adding to our collection. This is truly an exceptional pair of candelabras. They were produced by P. Canaux, a master silversmith who made the most wonderful and outstanding pieces of silver and ormolu. These ormolu candelabras are no exception with a variety of hand-chased and hand-chiseled motifs which elevate these pieces to a different level of quality and craftsmanship. The top most finial of each candelabra is absolutely marvelous with a phoenix emerging from a cauldron of flames. Flanked on either end of each candelabra are two satyrs each holding up a candelabra arm with superior quality, each wrinkle in their faces and hair on their heads is visible. Between the candelabras is a basket of ormolu cast fruits, leaves, and vines. They are truly breathtaking and in high-relief against the main body of the candelabras. The other two candelabra arms are held up by Nereus, the Greek GD of the sea. He is known for his half-man, half-dolphin appearance with a majestic and highly detailed pair of angelic wings...

Pair of American Rococo Revival Patinated Bronze Candelabras, Ca. 1825
Located in New York, NY
Bronze, dark-brown patina, unmarked. Measures: Height: 23” Width: 14” The notion of an “American Rococo” seems a contradiction in terms. The very word rococo is as French as Camembert. It connotes a style that reigned along with Louis XV in the aristocratic decadence of the 18th Century. It was garlanded, nonchalant, associated with erotic marshmallow nudes by Francois Boucher and foppish courtiers costumed as shepherds pretending they understood Jean-Jacques Rousseau when all they really wanted was romantic dalliance in the formal gardens of Versailles. In the history of painting it produced but one great artist, Antoine Watteau. By contrast, Americans of the period are remembered as the flinty inheritors of New England Puritans, full of rectitude and having not a moment for furbelow or frippery. Such few painters as were around included hard-nosed realists like John Singleton Copley and Charles Willson Peale. Well, as it turns out, life once again acts according to the principle of paradox. There was an American rococo. It came to us indirectly via England disguised under the name Chippendale. Now for the first time the style receives comprehensive survey in the exhibition “American Rococo, 1750-1775: Elegance in Ornament.” Jointly organized by New York’s Metropolitan Museum and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, it opens here Sundaywith a spread of some 170 works of decorative art and a conscientious catalogue with essays by Met and LACMA curators Morrison H. Heckscher and Leslie Greene Bowman. There are at least two ways of looking at the decorative arts. Connoisseurs appreciate their design and craftsmanship. Those of sociological bent examine objects of material culture for their revelations of history and the temper of the times. Actually neither view is complete without the other. Stylistically the rococo reveals a longing for intimacy in its small scale and an urge to organic nature in its love of stylized vines, tendrils, tiny flowers and seashells. If it were a new manner being promoted by Madison Avenue today it would probably be called “Baroque Lite.” There is an ease about the style that makes it airy, but it has an underlying formality that bespeaks lives of gentrified cultivation rather than beer-bellied sloth. It’s fascinating to examine the flintlock firearms on view and find these weapons of death shaped and decorated with the most exquisite care by wood carvers and metal engravers. All of this is completely consistent with the main currents of 18th-Century European thought. In France, Rousseau sang the virtues of nature and the noble savage like a present-day ecologist. In England, John Locke...
