African Ethiopian Tribal Folk Art Painting 20th Century

Ancient Ethiopian painting imported to Italy by a diplomat during the Italian occupation of Ethiopia, in the late 1930s. This genre scene painting is divided into eighteen squares bordered by a black frame and divided into three lines. The scene depicts the story of a couple with three children through the stories of their domestic life and their rural activity; each box has a caption written in the Amharic language. In the first line: they grind; they drink; …illegible… while they spin; they bring water.
In the second line: comb, cut your hair; treats your teeth; grind; they bring the wood; they bring water.
In the third section: they prepare beer; they prepare bread; they cook bread; they prepare lunch; while they eat; while they drink. This canvas is painted in shades of ocher and is mounteed on a ebonized frame. Dates back to the late 1930s. The canvas show minimal tears and signs of wear but we can customize a restoration.
The human figures are characterized by unrealistic proportions of the head and body and depicted in static positions. This sense of fixity and the narration in successive chapters in domestic environments make the paintings easily intelligible and suggestive.

Splendid 17th-century Italian painting by unknown artist, but certainly a follower of Caravaggio, relying on style and drawing.
The painting has a very beautiful gilded wooden frame, with a subtle greek with spheres and an overlying rectangular frame with sinuous flowers on each corner, very elegant and beautiful.
The painting depicts one of the most depicted religious scenes ever, the scourging of Christ, and is entirely done in oil on copper.
The scourging of Jesus is an episode narrated in the Gospels (Mk15:15-16; Mt27:26-27; Lk23:16-26; Jn19:1-17[1]).
Scourging is a flogging, particularly bloody, by means of sticks, rods or cat-o-nine-tails, the latter instrument consisting, in the Roman typology, of a short stick to which were secured several strings ending in metal claws, leads and bone splinters that caused tremendous lacerations and fractures to the tortured person. Chains are used in this scene, both to immobilize Jesus Christ and to flog him, as we can see in the upper right hand of the scourger.
According to some personal research, it turned out that the actual scourging of Christ was mostly depicted at the column, while this Christ is on the ground, so presumably Christ here is scourged during the Way of the Cross at one of those stages where he fell.
The painting has a very dark coloring, which is why this painting is believed to faithfully follow Caravaggio's style of dry, authoritarian brushstrokes. The painting shows a figure agonizing on the ground that continues to receive beatings and floggings of all kinds, representing Christ; his face is crucified in a loquacious expression of pain, he turns his eyes to heaven as if to invoke God, but at the same time those same eyes admonish the wickedness and arrogance inherent in humanity.
Christ has one hand resting on the ground in the act of holding himself, while the other takes a completely unnatural stance against the barren ground. His body appears hardened to wanting to parry the blows, his legs are curled up on his knees as he takes kicks from the soldier above him. Christ is depicted pinned down from the neck with a very large and strong black iron bolt held by the other soldier. A divine whiteness reverberates with vibrant luster on the maphorion of the present Virgin. The palpable iridescence that structures the thin rosaceous garment, woven with the same fresh light, produces a slight rustle when she takes her hands off. The Madonna in fact takes a prayerful pose, opening her palms to underline her fervent ecstatic intention; the white neck is rendered with perishable fullness of pigments, like the hands, perfectly alive, and the very shiny eyes. With fine shrewdness the artist of the present styles the Virgin's hair with thin white ribbons, exacerbating the purity. An evocative light falls gently on the bust, a materialized sign of divine glory.
The present can be traced back to the late Mannerist climate that prevailed in the capital after the emanation of the Tridentine council (1545-1563). The late Mannerist licenses that can still be seen there, such as the intense lyricism in the stylistic code adopted by the artist, are innervated in the new basic catechetical intent, which at the end of the century produced a certain figurative rigorism. The present, however, still responds to that extraordinary Roman dynamism that raised the capital to a bulwark for the entire mannerist lesson, matched only by a second artistic center, the Florentine one. The engaging carriage of the Virgin reflects the contemporary examples of Giuseppe Valeriano (1542-1596), a Jesuit painter, returning in the Marriage of the Virgin of the Roman Church of Jesus, as well as in the Madonna of Sorrows in the Recanati Altarpiece, equal ardor. Gianni Metalli, * 28.2.1930 Lugano, † 24.11.2006 Lugano. He attended compulsory school in Lugano and then the School of Arts and Crafts in Bellinzona. He is self-taught in his artistic training. After a figurative beginning, in the early 1970s he began a pictorial research of geometric orientation, which drew important stimuli from the meeting with the architect and artist Alberto Sartoris. He mainly creates small and medium-sized acrylics, accompanied by watercolors and drawings on paper.
Since 1962 he has held solo exhibitions in local and foreign galleries; he has participated in group exhibitions in Switzerland and later also in Germany and Italy. Between 1963 and 1985 he designed some theater sets. In the 1970s and 1980s he illustrated several literary and artistic publications. In 1996 he created an important public work in Locarno and in 2000 he carried out another significant intervention in the headquarters of the Banca dello Stato in Lugano. Since 1961 he has received several awards in Ticino and Italy. Since 1967 he has been a member of the SPSAS. In 2001 he exhibited at Villa dei Cedri in Bellinzona, where his donation to the museum was presented. In 2010 the Museo cantonale d’arte in Lugano exhibited the core of the painter’s works belonging to the cantonal collections, which includes the donation of Olga Metalli, the artist’s widow.
Metalli draws the initial inspiration for his geometric poetics from architecture and natural landscapes. In the 1970s he began his own investigation by marking the pictorial surface with quadrilaterals of various sizes, chromatically divided or partially curved. In their coplanar juxtaposition they evoke jagged mosaics or collages of fragments cut out and sewn together into a new totality. The formal structure is determined by a vertical dynamic, counterbalanced by a subtle horizontal segmentation. The color scheme dominated by gray-blue tones is interspersed with thoughtful yellow-red accents. Among the references of this first period is above all the Como abstraction of Mario Radice and Manlio Rho.
In the 1980s a new type of articulation takes over: the introduction of an oblique axial orientation, which disrupts the reticular ordering of the surface and frees the rhythm of the fields from the orthogonality adhering to the plane of the support. An inclined rectilinear element acts as an ordering axis for the distribution of the quadrilaterals. This creates "chromo-formal" nuclei that float lightly on the white background, evoking the Suprematist grammar of Kasimir Malevic. The artist himself intends these configurations as projections of imaginary "harmonic" architectures or axonometric perspectives, based on ordering lines. There is no shortage of more decorative results, set aside towards the end of the decade. The tonalism of the beginnings has lightened, acquiring greater luminosity and expressive force.
In the 1990s a further turning point occurs: Metalli progressively abandons the compositions with an oblique dominant in favor of a renewed orthogonal structuring of the pictorial plane. A reduced number of monochrome surfaces and lines (primary colors, gray and black) are evenly distributed on a white or gray background. The saint is depicted in front of the Virgin holding the Child portrayed with the wedding ring in his hand, enriched with a precious stone. According to the Golden Legend, Catherine of Alexandria was a very beautiful young woman, the only daughter of the king of Costa, who had refused to marry the emperor Maxentius because she was a Christian and devoted to Christ. Maxentius, unable to convince her to sacrifice to idols, had sent to call the wisest men and fifty philosophers and orators who presented themselves and tried to divert her from faith in Christ. Catherine, however, played so well that she was able to convert them, arousing the anger of the emperor who condemned them to the stake. Catherine, however, who had criticized Maxentius for the new persecutions against the Christians, was sentenced to prison without food. Abandoned for twelve days, she was fed by a dove sent by God. Maxentius then decided to execute her with the torture of the toothed wheel become her attribute iconographic; but by divine intervention this broke and the young was saved. Finally, she was beheaded and milk flowed from her neck. Catherine’s princely status is witnessed here by her sumptuous dress. The iconography of the mystical marriage was born in the fifteenth century, probably because the traditional iconographic attribute, the wheel, was sometimes so small as to look like a ring, and refers to a vision that will always remain present in the mind and heart of the saint. In Heaven she appeared to her, among the Angels and Saints, Christ the Child, in the arms of the Virgin. He took a precious ring that the Virgin Mary handed to her and put it in her finger, saying "I, your Creator and Saviour, take you in marriage; confident that you will keep you pure until you celebrate your eternal wedding with me, in Paradise" When Catherine was laughing, she found in her finger the same ring that she had seen and had in Heaven, and she considered herself forever the bride of Christ.
