This Mursi woman is wearing a hat that doubles as a sumptuously decorated piece of kitchenware - most objects
here have multiple functions - but that also struck me as having something of early modern Europe about it. The resemblance of the fly that landed on her face as this photograph was taken to the mouches (literally 'flies') worn by European women in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries was purely a happy accident!
