This original and comfortable chair, designed by Dutch interior and furniture designer Bas van Pelt (1900-1945), was manufactured by E.M.S. Overschie. The chair features a cantilevered tubular metal frame, lending it a sleek and modern appearance. This is contrasted by the warm, coarsely woven red 'sisal' fabric used for the seat and backrest, complemented by black lacquered wooden armrests. The combination of these materials creates an exciting visual and tactile experience. During the early 1930s, Van Pelt designed several pieces of tubular steel furniture, which were produced by D3 and E.M.S. Overschie. At that time, furniture designers with a functionalist approach were particularly interested in exploring the applications of tubular steel in furniture design.
Bastiaan Johannes van Pelt (1900-1945) was a Dutch furniture designer and interior designer. As son of a book printer, he spend his time after school working in several printing companies in Holland. At that time he already engaged in topics like designing furniture, interiors, carpets and fabrics, graphic work and pottery. Frits Henningsen is justly one of the most renowned master cabinetmakers, with this pair of easy chairs illustrating why.
The typical elements of Danish modern furniture, the straight lines, the clear design, had developed with time, starting on the long path from the historical style that was still predominant in the 1920s. Architect and furniture maker, Frits Henningsen had a significant role in paving this path. As an active member of the Cabinetmakers Guild from 1927, he was admired by his peers for the high quality of his craftsmanship. The shape of this chair model shows Henningsen’s opposition to the younger designers in the 1940s who preferred strictly straight lines. Henningsen on the other hand, believed furniture design needed to maintain curvature which contributed to a homely look. About the designer:
Hvidt & Mølgaard were the founders of the Copenhagen-based, Danish design and architectural firm which existed from 1944 until 2009. Founded by Peter Hvidt (1916-1986) and Orla Mølgaard-Nielsen (1907-1993), the company was a pioneering force in Danish furniture design and industrialized production in the 1950s, creating furniture that was easy to mass-produce and economic to transport.
Danish architect-designer Orla Mølgaard-Nielsen was born in 1907. His formative years were spent in Copenhagen, studying at the Aalborg Technical School and at the Art and Crafts School of the Design Museum. From 1931 until 1934, he continued his studies in furniture design at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts under the instruction of Kaare Klint. Peter Hvidt was born in Copenhagen in 1916. He studied architecture and cabinetry at the School of Arts and Crafts in Copenhagen. Subsequently, he worked at various design firms before establishing his own studio in 1942.
