In 1954, Olivetti, the Italian office equipment manufacturer, hired BBPR to design their New York showroom on Fifth Avenue and to create their first series of office furniture, called Spazio (1959/60). This line included chairs, shelving, cabinet systems, and desks, just like the one shown here. It won the Compasso d'Oro Award in 1962. The cabinet contains compartments with drawers secured on both sides. The top is furnished with dark brown vinyl which adds a sturdy touch the overall industrial appearance.
Studio B.B.P.R. was an Italian architectural partnership founded in Milan in 1932 by Gianluigi Banfi (1910-1945), Lodovico Barbiano di Belgiojoso (1909-2004), Enrico Peressutti (1908-1976) and Ernesto Nathan Rogers (1909-1969) who had studied at the Politecnico di Milano. B.B.P.R. was thus an acronym formed from the first letters of their family names. The architects found each other in their opposition to fascism in Italy in the 1930s and 1940s during Mussolini's autocratic regime. The architects therefore believed in developing a style that would have no references to contemporary politics. During the Second World War, they all joined the resistance. However, Rogers, a Jew, fled to Switzerland and both Belgiojoso and Banfi were deported to the Mauthausen concentration camp in Austria, where Banfi died in 1945. Despite the immense loss of Banfi, their architectural practice continued in the same name as before after...

Designed by Charlotte Perriand in the 1970s for the Les Arcs ski resort in France.
This beautiful two door cabinet is made from Solid pine, laminate and veneered lacquered panels.
The top is made from a anthracite laminate and is framed by a solid pine wooden rim.
The doors and sides of the cabinet are made from a white lacquered veneer, on the doors you can find two large solid pine knobs.
There is one shelve behind each of the doors.
The cabinet was fully restored and is in very good condition.

Charlotte Perriand was born on 24 October 1903 in Paris. She studied at the École de l'Union Centrale des Arts Décoratifs from 1920 to 1925. Two years later, she began working as an interior designer, based at her studio on Place Saint-Sulpice. Her research and interest in furniture design led her to collaborate with Le Corbusier and Pierre Jeanneret in the 1920s and 1930s. We are certain, because of several style elements that are typical for his designs for Liberty & Co in the late 19th century. We have no pictures in books or other evidence, but the pieces from his hand that can be found on the internet reveal style elements that are very similar and they were used by no one else. The design of this incredibly artistic piece shows both the influences of Medieval and Rural Britain. It were these early and amazing pieces of furniture from the Liberty Studio (headed by Wyburd) that made people across the continent speak of the 'Stile Liberty'. Designers like Wyburd and pieces of furniture like this amazing cabinet, influenced and shaped the entire development of the Jugendstil and Art Nouveau in Europe. That too makes this rare piece important for collectors and possibly for museums around the world.
This cupboard is a work of art and it is an absolute joy to look at. It is all made of solid and stained oak and apart from the stunning and impressive overal design with the overhanging top with supporting beams, there are some key style elements that make this cabinet really stand out. First of all, there is the ever so true saying which is embossed in copper in beautiful Arts and Crafts letters which reads 'WELCOME IS THE BEST CHEER'.
