Adja Yunkers Expressionist Painting
By Adja Yunkers
Located in New York, NY
Gouache and ink on mat board by Adja Yunkers, signed and dated 1958 on verso. An early work from Yunkers's Abstract Expressionist period, when he was married to art critic Dore Ashton and was part of the circle that congregated at Cedar Tavern. Born in Riga, Russia, Yunkers led a highly cosmopolitan life, studying and working in Leningrad, Berlin, Paris, London, and Stockholm (where he edited and published two art magazines) before settling down in the U.S., primarily in New York City in 1947. A teacher at the New School for Social Research, Yunkers was internationally renowned for his woodblock prints and lithographs, turning to painting--first Expressionist, later Minimalist color fields--in the late 1950's. His work is in the permanent collections of numerous museums, including the Brooklyn Museum, MoMA, the Corcoran Gallery, MFA Boston...

Mixed Media Painting Memorie, Gianfranco Asveri
By Gianfranco Asveri
Located in New York, NY
Memorie, by Italian artist Gianfranco Asveri mixed media on paper, gallery framed in white wood frame and under glass. Depicted are his recurring themes of his favourite subjects: his mother, his dog, his cat, his farm, and his farm animals.
Gianfranco Asveri was born in Fiorenzuola D’Arda, Italy, in 1948. The artist lives and works at Gasperini on the hills between Parma and Piacenza with his beloved dogs.
He began to paint in 1969. His first work was merely figurative. In the 1980s he moved closer to the “Art Brut” style.
Renowned in Italy, Asveri has just finished a solo exhibition in Genoa at the Medioeval “Commenda” and will be presented in Paris next February during the Contemporary Art Fair in Port de Versailles.
Recently, the newspaper “Il Sole 24 Ore” (The Italian Economic newspaper) included Asveri among the artists to watch in terms of investment in the Italian Art Market.
An appreciable number of famous critics have written essays about his works: Paolo Bledinger, Luca Beatrice, Flaminio Gualdoni and Martina Corgnati.

– Sogni dipinti, Galleria Rotaross, Novara.

Modern Still-Life Pinecone Oil Painting Panel Buffie Johnson 1974 Plant Series
By Buffie Johnson
Located in Brooklyn, NY
Oil on linen. "Pit Thea", Study of a pine cone. From the Plant Series 1968-1989. Signed lower left, dated 1974. Signed and titled and dated on back. 20" X 24" (floating frame 21" X 25").
My imagery is rooted in the world of the spirit which manifests itself through ritual, myth and symbol. The monolithic single-image plant forms which I began painting in 1968 are potent symbols of the ancient Great Goddess in Her aspect as ‘Lady of the Plants’, who . . . has been worshipped under a thousand names since the beginnings of prehistory.”
(Buffie Johnson, Artist’s Statement for the exhibition catalogue of The Language of Symbols, Landmark Gallery, New York City, April 1980.)
“... in the ancient world ... such images were perceived as sacred. This sense of divinity inherent in the plant has inspired these icons and through them I hope to evoke a similar magical experience. These forms were created both as metaphors for the spiritual mystery of nature . . . [and] as celebrations of the feminine.”
(Buffie Johnson, Artist’s Statement for the exhibition catalogue of Buffie Johnson: The Spirit of Plants, Chuck Levitan Gallery, New York City, October 3rd – October 26th, 1997.)
