Marc Chagall, Tribe of Naphtali, from The Jerusalem Windows, 1962 (after)
By Marc Chagall
Located in Southampton, NY
This exquisite lithograph after Marc Chagall (1887–1985), titled Tribe of Naphtali, from the album Marc Chagall, The Jerusalem Windows, originates from the 1962 edition published by Andre Sauret, Editeur, Paris, and printed by Mourlot Freres, Paris, June 7, 1962. This luminous composition celebrates the Tribe of Naphtali, symbolizing eloquence, swiftness, and divine grace. Tribe of Naphtali captures Chagall’s poetic vision through a harmonious orchestration of radiant blues, greens, and golds, evoking motion, vitality, and spiritual liberation. The image reflects the artist’s ability to translate ancient symbolism into a timeless modern language—one that bridges faith and imagination, merging biblical narrative with lyrical abstraction. In this work, Chagall transforms sacred tradition into an exaltation of life, beauty, and spiritual freedom. Executed as a lithograph on velin paper, this work measures 15 x 11 inches (38.1 x 27.94 cm). Unsigned and unnumbered as issued. The edition exemplifies the exceptional craftsmanship of the Mourlot Freres atelier, renowned for its collaboration with the most important modern artists of the 20th century. Artwork Details: Artist: After Marc Chagall (1887–1985) Title: Tribe of Naphtali, from Marc Chagall, The Jerusalem Windows Medium: Lithograph on velin paper Dimensions: 15 x 11 inches (38.1 x 27.94 cm) Inscription: Unsigned and unnumbered as issued Date: 1962 Publisher: Andre Sauret, Editeur, Paris Printer: Mourlot Freres, Paris Condition: Well preserved, consistent with age and medium Provenance: From the album Marc Chagall, The Jerusalem Windows, published by Andre Sauret, Editeur, Paris, June 7, 1962 Notes: Excerpted from the album, This album, which was compiled by Andre Sauret, was completed on June 7, 1962. The texts by Jean Leymarie were composed by hand in "Romain du roi" and were printed by The Imprimerie Nationale de France. The thirty-six preparatory color designs, some of which are in twenty colors, were transferred to the stones by Charles Sorlier under the direction of Marc Chagall. These designs and the two original lithographs by Marc Chagall were printed by Mourlot Freres. The other reproductions and the binding are by Draeger Freres. About the Publication: Marc Chagall, The Jerusalem Windows (Les Vitraux de Jerusalem), published in 1962 by Andre Sauret, Editeur, Paris, stands as one of the artist’s most celebrated illustrated albums and a cornerstone of modern printmaking. The publication documents Chagall’s monumental stained-glass windows created for the synagogue of the Hadassah-Hebrew University Medical Center in Jerusalem—an artistic and spiritual masterpiece dedicated to the twelve tribes of Israel. Conceived in collaboration with master printer Charles Sorlier and the renowned Mourlot Freres atelier, the album compiles the artist’s original color studies through vibrant lithography, achieving a remarkable luminosity that mirrors the glowing transparency of stained glass. The accompanying text by art historian Jean Leymarie offers profound insights into Chagall’s vision, faith, and symbolism. Completed on June 7, 1962, this edition embodies the union of fine art, craftsmanship, and devotion, capturing the transcendent beauty of Chagall’s windows and their universal message of peace and faith. About the Artist: Marc Chagall (1887–1985) was a Belarus-born French painter, printmaker, and designer whose visionary imagination, radiant color, and deeply poetic symbolism made him one of the most beloved and influential artists of the 20th century. Rooted in the imagery of his Jewish heritage and the memories of his childhood in Vitebsk, Chagall’s art wove together themes of faith, love, folklore, and fantasy with a dreamlike modern sensibility. His unique style—merging elements of Cubism, Fauvism, Expressionism, and Surrealism—defied categorization, transforming ordinary scenes into lyrical meditations on memory and emotion. Influenced by Russian icon painting, medieval religious art, and the modern innovations of artists such as Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, and Georges Braque, Chagall developed a profoundly personal visual language filled with floating figures, vibrant animals, musicians, and lovers that symbolized the transcendent power of imagination and love. During his early years in Paris, he became an integral part of the Ecole de Paris circle, forming friendships with Amedeo Modigliani, Fernand Leger, and Sonia Delaunay, and his creative spirit resonated with that of his peers and successors—Alexander Calder, Alberto Giacometti, Salvador Dali, Joan Miro, Wassily Kandinsky, Marcel Duchamp, and Man Ray—artists who, like Chagall, sought to push the boundaries of perception, emotion, and form. Over a prolific career that spanned painting, printmaking, stained glass, ceramics, and stage design, Chagall brought an unparalleled poetic sensibility to modern art, infusing even the most abstract subjects with human warmth and spiritual depth. His works are held in the most prestigious museums around the world, including the Museum of Modern Art, the Centre Pompidou, the Tate, and the Guggenheim, where they continue to inspire generations of artists and collectors. The highest price ever paid for a Marc Chagall artwork is approximately $28.5 million USD, achieved in 2017 at Sotheby’s New York for Les Amoureux (1928). Palazzo dell Angelo
By John Taylor Arms
Located in Middletown, NY
Palazzo dell'Angelo 1931 Etching and drypoint on cream-colored, handmade laid paper with deckle edges, 7 1/4 x 6 3/4 inches (185 x 171 mm), edition of 100, full margins. Signed, dated and numbered "Ed. 100" in pencil, lower margin, second state (of three). Printed by Henry Carling, New York. Extremely minor mat tone and some inky residue in the top right corner, all unobtrusive and well outside of image area. An exquisite impression of this intricate image, with astonishing detail, and all the fine lines printing clearly. The image represents the first print which Arms printed on his own handmade paper. Framed handsomely with archival materials and museum grade glass in a wood gilt frame with a flower and garland motif. Illustrated: Dorothy Noyes Arms, Hill Towns and Cities of Northern Italy, p. 180; Anderson, American Etchers Abroad 1880-1930; Eric Denker, Reflections & Undercurrents: Ernest Roth and Printmaking in Venice, 1900-1940, p. 116. [Fletcher 233] Born in 1887 in Washington DC, John Taylor Arms studied at Princeton University, and ultimately earned a degree in architecture at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1912. With the outbreak of W.W.I, Arms served as an officer in the United States Navy, and it was during this time that he turned his focus to printmaking, having published his first etching in 1919. His first subjects were the Brooklyn Bridge, near the Navy Yard, and it was during his wartime travel that Arms created a series of extraordinarily detailed etchings based on Gothic cathedrals and churches he visited in France and Italy. He used what was available to him, namely sewing needles and a magnifying glass, to create the incredibly rich and fine detail that his etchings are known for. Upon his return to New York after the war, Arms enjoyed a successful career as a graphic artist, created a series of etchings of American cities, and published Handbook of Print Making and Print Makers (Macmillan, 1934). He served as President of the Society of American Graphic Artists, and in 1933, was made a full member of the National Academy of Design. In its most modern incarnation, Palazzo dell'Angelo was constructed in or around 1570. The building, which has a rich and storied history, was erected upon the ruins of an earlier structure which predates the Gothic period. Some remnants of the earliest features of the residence were most certainly still visible when Arms visited, as they are today. Having a background in architecture, there's no question that Arms was moved by the beauty, history and ingenuity represented in the physical structure. One thing specifically gives away Arms's passion for the architecture, and that is the fact that he focused on the building's Moorish entranceway, balustrade, and two mullioned windows, and not on the curious Gothic era bas-relief of an angel nestled into the facade of the building, after which the structure is named. The sculpture itself doesn't appear in Arms's composition at all, despite the fact that it is the feature of the building that is most famous in its folklore. Arms instead focuses on the oldest portion of the architecture, even documenting some of the remnants of a fresco, and a funerary stele for the freedman Tito Mestrio Logismo, and his wife Mestria Sperata (visible above the water level, to the left of the door, behind the gondola), which was first described in 1436. Among the many notable bits of history regarding the Palazzo, it has been documented that Tintoretto painted frescos of battle scenes on the facade of the building. The paintings have been lost to time and the elements, but not entirely to history. The empty frame...
