A Muse by Dieter Roth set of ten abstract black and white lithographs
By Dieter Roth
Located in New York, NY
This series of abstract black and white Roth prints is full of movement, wildly diverse mark making, visceral, three-dimensional shapes and dynamic sketched lines. The artist worked on the same stone, erasing and adding elements with each step of the process to create a new print. Working on a lithography stone allowed him to scratch away areas with precision, revealing tightly hatched white lines that complement swaths of smokey gray. A Muse reflects Roth’s interest in permutations, decay, and a mathematical approach to making images. Each week the artist created a new variant: the series was originally planned as a set of 52. Dieter Roth, A Muse 1971-1972 series of 12 prints (this set is an incomplete set of ten prints), lithographs from stone printed in black on white handmade paper image 18.9 × 14.6 in / 48 x 37 cm paper 30.7 × 20.9 in / 78 x 53 cm edition of 30 each, numbered and signed, 6 artists copies this series 1/30 printed by Karl Schulz, Braunschweig and published by Petersburg Press, London weekly variant printed from the same stone, began October 1971 (52 prints were planned, but only 12 were executed) Condition: excellent with some dimples and wear commensurate with age Catalogue Reference: Roth 185-196 Dieter Roth was a printmaker from childhood: his first etching at the age of 16 was scratched into a soda can, and despite the failure of the can to print anything but a shadow of ink, he continued his study and by 20 was a serious apprentice in lithography to a well-known commercial artist, Eugen Jordi. Later he would continue to print and publish much of his own work. From the 1960s onward, his collaborations with Petersburg Press brought him international recognition and produced some of his most celebrated work: Six Piccadillies (1970), and Containers (1972). Interested in chance and spontaneity, Roth was drawn to make prints using unorthodox means: according to mathematical principles, using equations, or by randomly rearranging blocks before they were run through the press. The artist often printed plates repeatedly in different colors, producing many variations from just a few images. He used the printing press and materials to interrogate the creative process rather than just as tools to achieve an edition of identical prints: for example, overprinting or under-inking, or running objects through the press (in 1968, a box of chocolates). Roth was not just interested in the chance of making pictures but the unpredictability of decay: allowing the grease from slices of meat to slowly contaminate paper, immersing a print in vegetable juice, clamping metal to paper to produce rust, and pouring chocolate over a finished work. Roth would make hundreds of print editions and books over his career and blurred the line between genres and mediums, embarking on prodigious collaborations and experimentation with music, poetry...

1981 New York/New Wave P.S.1 poster (Basquiat New York/New Wave)
By Jean-Michel Basquiat
Located in NEW YORK, NY
New York/New Wave PS1 1981: A rare, highly sought after Basquiat collectible announcing Basquiat (as SAMO) in his first major show. Curated by the great Basquiat champion, Diego Cortez, the show would mark Jean-Michel's official unveiling to the art world. A historical document of the New York downtown art scene of the time, additional participants included (with their names listed on the poster): Keith Haring, Futura 2000, Andy Warhol, Kenny Sharf, Robert Mapplethorpe, Nan Goldin, Dondi, Lady Pink, Lawrence Weiner & many more figures of historic acclaim. Basquiat credit (as SAMO) found in the lower area of the top second area. Folding exhibition poster; 22 x 34 inches. Fair overall vintage condition; minor signs of handling; minor separation to folds in a few areas. Few known to have survived in good condition. Unsigned from an edition of unknown; RARE. Poster design by Randolph Black. Glenn O'brien, Artforum 2003: "1981: “NEW YORK/NEW WAVE”: "In June of ’80 the spectacular “Times Square Show,” mounted in an abandoned multistory massage parlor on Forty-first Street and Seventh Avenue, took things to a whole new level. The show was as funky as its surroundings and as lively a happening as had been seen since the ’60s. Artists dropped in and contributed to this nonstop party, a continuous work-in-progress that featured not only the best young artists but also film, video, and live music performances. It brought worlds together—the uptown (as in the Bronx) with the downtown. The institutional emergence of this new force took place in mid-February 1981, in the “New York/New Wave” show at P.S. 1 in Long Island City, a spectacular exhibition featuring 119 artists (more or less) and curated by Diego Cortez. Mammoth in scale, “New York/New Wave” offended purists as much by its maximalist approach as by its content. Cortez hung the art from floor to ceiling, throughout the galleries and the halls. He brought together a coalition of punks, No Wave musicians, young painters, graffiti artists, poets, performers, and more radical-type forefathers like Ray Johnson, Lawrence Weiner, William Burroughs, and Andy Warhol to create a museum–as–fun house that engaged the eye and mind relentlessly. I find quite a few names who went on to serious things: Kathy Acker, David Armstrong, Jean-Michel Basquiat, David Byrne, Sarah Charlesworth, Henry Chalfant, Larry Clark, Arch Connelly, Jimmy de Sana, Dondi, Brian Eno, Fab 5 Freddy, Peter Fend, Futura 2000, Jedd Garet, Nan Goldin, Keith Haring, Duncan Hannah, Roberto Juarez, Bill Komoski, Greer Lankton, Lady Pink, Marcus Leatherdale, Arto Lindsay, Judy Linn, John Lurie, Lydia Lunch, Ann Magnuson, Christoper Makos, Robert Mapplethorpe, Frank Moore, Lee Quinones (LEE), Rene Ricard, Kenny Scharf, Kate Simon, Duncan Smith...

Vintage Jim Dine Green Bathrobe exhibition poster, 1970s retro pop art font
By Jim Dine
Located in New York, NY
This original, vintage poster on poster stock features one of Jim Dine's most iconic motifs: the bathrobe. In 1964, Dine saw an ad in the New York Times: “The ad shows a robe with the man airbrushed out of it. There was nobody in the bathrobe, but when I saw it, it looked like me.” Standing in for the artist's own body and rife with personal meaning, it provides a framework for limitless formal and stylistic experimentation. Here, the garment is colored bright green and defined by variegated black lines. Numbers label each part of the robe as in an anatomical chart. Bold black lettering reads Jim Dine, Petersburg Press...

Kind of Blue (Hand signed and dated card depicting his sculpture)
By Richard Deacon
Located in New York, NY
Richard Deacon Kind of Blue (Hand Signed and Dated card), 2005 Offset lithograph postcard Boldly signed and dated 9-01-05 by the artist above the image of the sculpture 5 4/5 × 4 1/4 inches Unframed Offset lithograph postcard depicting Richard Deacon's 1995 ceramic sculpture "Kind of Blue", in the collection of the Arts Council of Great Britain. This work is hand signed and dated on the front of the image. Very good vintage condition; minor handling and discoloration around far corners (edges) to the card which will easily frame out. Richard Deacon’s voluptuous abstract forms have placed him at the forefront of British sculpture since the 1980s and, hugely influential, his works are visible in major public commissions around the world. His voracious appetite for material has seen him move between laminated wood, stainless steel, corrugated iron, polycarbonate, marble, clay, vinyl, foam and leather. As he explains: “Changing materials from one work to the next is a way of beginning again each time (and thus of finishing what had gone before)”. Deacon describes himself as a ‘fabricator’, emphasising the construction behind the finished object – although many of the works are indeed cast, modelled or carved by hand – and accordingly the logic of the fabrication is often exposed: sinuous curved forms might be bound by glue oozing between layers of wood or have screws and rivets protruding from sheets of steel, wearing their hearts on their sleeves. Such transparency highlights the reactive nature of the process: it is part of a two-way conversation between artist and material that transforms the workaday into something metaphorical. The idea of ‘fabrication’ also denotes making something up, of fiction rather than truth, and this knack for wordplay surfaces in Deacon’s titles, which might establish juxtapositions or wreak new meaning from familiar sayings or clichés – see Let’s not be Stupid (1991), No Stone Unturned (1999), Water Under the Bridge (2008) or Shiver My Timbers (2016). Richard Deacon Biography Richard Deacon was born in Bangor, Wales, UK in 1949 and lives and works in London, UK. He has a BA from St Martin’s School of Art, London, UK (1972) and an MA in Environmental Media from the Royal College of Art, London, UK (1977). Solo exhibitions include Kula Gallery and the Museum of Fine Arts, Split, Croatia (2021); Middelheim Museum, Antwerp, Belgium (2017); San Diego Museum of Art, San Diego, CA, USA (2017); Prague City Gallery, Prague, Czech Republic (2017); Museum Folkwang, Essen, Germany (2016), Kunstmuseum Winterthur, Switzerland (2015); Tate Britain, London, UK (2014); Sprengel Museum, Hannover, Germany (2011); Musée de la Ville de Strasbourg, France (2010); Portland Art Museum, Oregon, USA (2008); PS1 Contemporary Art Center, New York, USA (2001); MACCSI, Caracas, Venezuela (1996); Whitechapel Art Gallery, London, UK (1989) and Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, USA (1988). He represented Wales at the Venice Biennale, Italy (2007) and has participated in the Venice Architecture Biennale, Italy (2012), Glasgow International, UK (2006) and documenta 9, Kassel, Germany (1992). What it doesn't mention is that Andy Warhol famously painted his portrait in 1986! Peter Halley is that legendary.
