Japanese Style Cabinet-Secretary Att. to Perret Vibert, France, circa 1880
By Perret et Vibert
Located in PARIS, FR
A Japanese style carved wood cabinet, with a painted decor imitating Japanese lacquer, ornamented with flowers, birds and butterflies. Opening onto two drawers and a paper filer, the upright-secretary door is also fitted with red velvet. Surmounted by a drawer and asymmetrical shelves, composed in the Japanese « zen » spirit, the cabinet stands on four legs joined by an engraved stretcher. The great influence of the Far-East, through China and Japan, in the second half of the 19th century French art could be found first in painting and soon after in decorative arts and furniture as well. Following the Franco-English military campaign led in 1860 against the Imperial army in China, the French troops of Napoleon III brought back from the Summer Palace, a part of the Chinese Imperial court treasure, which will make up the famous Chinese Museum of Empress Eugénie at the Fontainebleau Palace. The French artists won’t be long to take inspiration from those exotic and sumptuous objects for their creations, as they used to do in the 18th century, when the best French cabinet-makers adapted the Chinese lacquers on the luxurious royal chests. But the influence of Japan, at the Meiji period (1868-1912), came also very quickly to France, thanks to the opening of the country in the middle of the 19th century, as well as the development of traveling and the amazing Universal Exhibitions, in which Japan participated for the first time in 1867 in Paris. Then many Japanese objects and prints were imported to France and to all Europe, and for which some collectors spent already fortunes. With Manet and Impressionists generation, the passion for Japanese art, more than a simple taste for an exotic style, was still in fashion until the turn of the 19th century. It provoked not only a craze among the French aristocratic families as well as the wealthy Paris high society, wishing renew their mansion inner decoration, but turned also to a real revolutionary movement among the “avant-garde” artists. Those artists, whoever they were, painters, cabinet-makers or designers of ceramic, bronze and crystal objects, adapted then those techniques and naturalistic motifs unknown until this time. Christofle, very famous since 1867 as a silversmith, was also one of the leaders among the inventors of Japanism. He knew how to use Japanese elements to his own splendid works made in silver or “cloisonné” enameled bronze. During the 1878 Paris Universal Exhibition, Christofle presented with great success his life-sized bronze Japanese ladies torcheres, executed by the renowned sculptor Guillemin. Another famous company to be mentioned, is “L’Escalier de Cristal”, producing art objects and furniture, all of high standard quality and innovating much with their Japanese decor. Highly remarked during the Universal Exhibitions, “L’Escalier de Cristal” collaborated with the greatest artists, such Gallé and Rousseau for glass- and ceramic wares, and the cabinet-makers Lièvre and Viardot, whom made furniture including sometimes authentic Japanese elements. In 1872, Alfred Perret and Ernest Vibert opened in Paris, at 33 rue du Quatre-Septembre a store that offered “natural bamboo furniture and cane seats” and all kinds of textile fittings for furniture. This furniture used for winter gardens and terraces of mansions knew then a resounding success. They developed their business around 1884 with their Japanese style furniture, very close to that executed by Gabriel Viardot (1830-1906). In 1886, the company appearing in the category of “Chinoiserie and Japoneries” offered, in addition to furniture and seating creation, works of art and inlaid furniture directly imported from the Far East ; an activity that expanded rapidly. Their exotic fantasy furniture presented at the Universal Exhibition of Paris in 1889 and 1900, rewarded them two silver medals. In 1894, the company was listed under the name “Perret et Vibert”, headed by the son of Alfred Perret and Ernest Vibert. The same year, they redesigned their store on rue du Quatre-Septembre, creating ten new show-rooms, showing complete furniture sets of Japanese and Chinese style inspiration. It was not until 1895, that the company was finally named “La Maison des Bambous” and organized then in their shops an “exhibition of country furniture and seats for castles and villas”, which was visited by Empress Eugenie to furnish her villa Cyrnos at Cap Martin. She actually was a regular customer of the “Maison des Bambous” as she bought repeatedly furniture. In October of the same year, the king of Greece...

Oak Buffet with 2 Doors and 3 Drawers by René Gabriel, 1940s
By Rene Gabriel
Located in PARIS, FR
Oak buffet with 2 Doors and 3 Drawers by René Gabriel, 1940s René Gabriel (1899 - 1950) is a precursor of French industrial design. He was one of the first to create, as early as the 1930s, economical mass-produced furniture combining aestheticism, robustness and sobriety, a source of inspiration for a whole generation of future designers. A student at the Germain Pilon School and then at the National School of Decorative Arts, René Gabriel began as a domino maker by designing and producing his own wallpapers, and then made his mark as a decorative artist in most of the salons and international exhibitions of the inter-war period. In 1927, he began his research into the creation of mass-produced furniture and proposed a piece of furniture composed of juxtaposable and superposable elements. He studied an economical version that he presented in 1934 at the Salon des arts ménagers under the name of RG elements. Another major turning point came in 1944, when the Ministry of Reconstruction and Urban Planning commissioned him to create emergency furniture. A fervent advocate of furniture for all, René Gabriel designed numerous models for disaster victims by establishing close ties with industry. He also collaborated with Auguste Perret...

Exceptional Gaston Poisson Robert Pansart Cabinet Lacquered Mahogany, Art Deco
By Atelier Pansart, Gaston Poisson
Located in Paris, France
This splendid and rare large furniture piece includes three doors with engraved signed keys from the artist Gaston Poisson, “GP”. This circa 1937 cabinet is made of green lacquered* mahogany and contains 12 interior shelves (three doors each with 4 shelves), each shelf featuring beautiful marquetry detail. The centerpiece of this beautiful cabinet is the large exterior mirror by Robert Pansart. This is made of "églomisé" glass with a polychrome geometric ribbon-like decor. Églomisé glass is a technique used often for mirrors that creates intricate decoration using golden leaves and silver. *THE LACQUER IS NOT ORIGINAL, THE CABINET HAS BEEN REFINISHED LATE 20 CENTURY Gaston Poisson, a cabinetmaker from Lille, France, is a renowned Renaissance designer best known for his modernist work. He has a unique taste for pure clean lines, mostly from the 1950s-1960s, which is exemplified in this particular piece. The square and diagonal motifs visible on the facade of the cabinet as well as the ornate marquetry on the interior shelves show that this piece was highly specialized, a well thought out piece made with incredible care. Robert Pansart is a French glassmaker and decorator who specialized in his unique technique of etching and oxidizing with “églomisé” glass. One of the most highly regarded glassmakers of his time, he mainly worked from post war years to the 1960s, and his work is reminiscent of a world based on fairy tales – evocative of the 1940s-1950s taste. His mirrors tend to appear in the antique art market and are valued as highly collectible pieces. Pansart mirrors were auctioned at very high prices at auctions at Artcurial and other major auction houses (see the last picture) Different works of the artist: Berliz Cinema in Paris Municipal Theater of Poitiers (see last picture) Theater of the Paquebot France

Abstract Sculpture Polychrome Metal Circles, like Ron Arad - 1950/1960
By Ron Arad, Jean Tinguely, Alexander Calder
Located in Paris, FR
Large structure/sculpture, composed of several polychrome metallic circles. . In the spirit of Ron Arad's bookworms and design pieces and abstract sculptures or Jean Tinguely sculptures . Period : 1960 . Origin : France . Can be positioned on the wall as a bookworm or wall sculpture . Dimensions : . Height : 110cm W : 114cm D : 21 cm . Several traces of rust as shown on the video. . In vintage condition. . Ron Arad, a British designer of Israeli origin, was born in 1951 in Tel Aviv. First trained at the Jerusalem Academy of Art, Ron Arad then studied at the Architectural Association School in London in 1973. . Ron Arad's first creations are furniture made with metal tubes and called "one-offs" because they are unique pieces. One Off is also the name of his first company. Ron Arad became famous in the early 1970s, thanks to the creation of seats inspired by the armchairs of a Rover, seats that he found in a car junkyard. Also among Ron Arad's best-known pieces are the Bookworm shelf from 1993 and the Tom Vac chair from 1997. His surprising work makes him a free creator without constraints or borders who navigates between design, architecture and plastic arts. Ron Arad uses materials such as plastic, polished steel or aluminum to create elements made of aerial scrolls. His creations with sinusoidal, elliptical or ovoid shapes range from unique pieces to industrial production, including limited series. In 2008, the Center Pompidou presents a retrospective of his work, entitled "No Discipline". There are major and emblematic pieces of the artist, prototypes accompanied by audiovisuals, limited series and objects of industrial production as well as numerous architectural projects. Ron Arad, whose works are exhibited in museums and galleries around the world, creates pieces for renowned houses such as Vitra, Kartell, Moroso, Artemide and Alessi. . Jean Tinguely, born May 22, 1925 in Friborg and died August 30, 1991 in Bern, was a Swiss sculptor, painter and draftsman. With his second wife, Niki de Saint Phalle, he created gigantic...

The profiled legs, the top finished in a chamfer on its underside circumference. . Brass drawer handle. . State of use, wear, many scratches, accidents and losses, painted in black. . I also have another one as you can see on the video, in another color. . Need to be restored but this is a piece of Franch design History...:) . H. 74 cm W. 131 cm D. 71 cm Provenance : University residence - France - 1950 Roger Landault . This office by Robert Charroy bears the marks of its use, and for good reason, it has equipped the Jean Zay university residence, for which it was designed. The patina of time therefore takes on all its charm, with a touch of nostalgia for some. This piece of furniture tells the story of an exceptional context, that of the student housing project launched in the emergency of post-war reconstruction, in 1948, and which has evolved to become the most ambitious university pilot program in Europe. In 1954, he offered to accommodate 3,000 students in functionally furnished accommodation and common areas, thanks to two competitions organized in 1955 and 1956. The watchword: quality produced at a lower cost using industrial processes . A beautiful playground for designers, including Jean Prouvé and Charlotte Perriand Marcel Gascoin, Roger Landault, Jean Lesage...
