"African Drummer, " Fabulous Cubist Bronze Sculpture, France, 1920s
Located in Philadelphia, PA
A brilliant example of early French cubist sculpture, this depiction of an African drummer, her hands beating the two-sided drum and her head looking up as she sings or chants to the music, illustrates the fractured, reinvented reality that Picasso and Braque invented just ten or twenty years before. The abstracted breasts of the figure bring to mind the mature Cubism of Ossip Zadkine, Jean Souverbie...

"Exchange of Cultures, " High Style Art Deco Porcelain Lamp Base w/ Nudes by Robj
By ROBJ
Located in Philadelphia, PA
Illustrated in "Ceramiche Robj" and considered a major design by the renowned sculptor and ceramicist, this large piece was probably made in early 1930s to coincide with the debut of the Exposition Coloniale Internationale in Paris, which attracted almost 9 million visitors in less than a year. Rare and striking, this porcelain table lamp base depicts the globe surmounted by a tightly composed cluster of nude and semi-nude female figures representing cultures around the world. The women depicted here, all glazed in a gorgeous snow-white glaze highlighted in gold, are clearly representing a range of nations in Asia and Africa, probably coinciding with the nations that were part of the French Colonial Empire in the 1930s, before they won their freedom. Much like the one surviving building from the Exposition, now the Cité nationale de l'histoire de l'immigration, which features a massive bas relief mural...

Sleeping Child Bookends, Probably Viennese, with Pale Blue and Yellow Glazes
By Wiener Werkstätte
Located in Philadelphia, PA
Entirely charming and winsome, this pair of bookends depicting nude children with golden hair who are sleeping on pale blue beds, was probably executed by one of the ceramic artists associated with the Wiener Werkstätte (or Vienna Workshop) in the 1910s and 1920s. Established in 1903 by Koloman Moser and Josef Hoffmann, the Vienna Workshop brought together architects, artists and designers working in ceramics, fashion, silver, furniture and the graphic arts, including Michael Powolny, Berthold...

"Shepherd and Shepherdess, " Monumental Art Deco Sculptures, Probably by De Vegh
By Geza De Vegh
Located in Philadelphia, PA
Monumental and dignified, this pair of Art Deco sculptures depict a shepherd and shepherdess, crisply shaped and stylized like the best of 1930s public sculpture, and painted in rich but subdued colors with an effect like sun-bleached stucco. It is our estimation that they were sculpted by Geza De Vegh, the Hungarian-American sculptor who created a range of pieces for the Lenox and Lamberton Scammell porcelain works, both in Trenton, New Jersey, as well as a group of rare ceramic pieces for the Phoenix Company. Importantly, De Vegh's work was very popular among set designers and art directors in Hollywood. His works are evident in the background of important Bette Davis films such as "The Letter," art directed by Carl Weyl; and "Now Voyager...

Martha J Cornwell American Arts Crafts Glazed Terracotta Elephant Sculpture
Located in Philadelphia, PA
A fine early 20th century sculpture of an elephant. Attributed to Martha Jackson Cornwell. Depicting a stoutly modeled elephant on an integral plinth with a blanket draped across its back and an Indian headdress or harness across its forehead. Decorated in white, blue, and green glazes on a terracotta body and with inset beads or pearls to the elephant's head and forehead. Cornwell was a student of Kenyon Cox, Arthur Dow, and Augustus Saint Gaudens at the Art League in New York City at the end of the 19th Century. She was subsequently an assistant to St. Gaudens for a decade and a half on his Shaw Memorial in Boston. All in all, simply a wonderful, unique sculpture from one of America's important female sculptors of the early 20th Century! Date: Early 20th Century Overall Condition: It is in overall fair, as-pictured, used estate condition. Condition Details: With some losses to the blanket edges...

"Mother and Child, " Monumental Mahogany Sculpture by Zettler, Logan Medal
Located in Philadelphia, PA
Large and highly affecting, this 52-inch high mahogany sculpture of a woman holding her child, looking out pensively into the world, won the Frank Logan Medal of the Arts at the 22nd Chicago Artist Exhibition in 1918. It is the greatest masterpiece of Emil Zettler, who is best known today for his architectural sculptures in collaboration with George Grant Elmslie, Perkins, Hamilton & Fellows, Holabird & Roche and other leading Chicago architects. An array of his sculptures survive, for example, on the facade of the Old Second National Bank, Aurora, Illinois, as well as two great hotels: the Palmer House...
