Art Deco Tall Bronze Figure "Phoenician Dancer" by Demetre Chiparus
By Demetre Chiparus
Located in Neguri, Vizcaya
Dancer by Demétre Chiparus 1886 - 1947 Large chrysoelephantine sculpture in gilt bronze Marble base. Signed "D. H. Chiparus". Measures: 67 cms. alt. total and 49 cms. diam. base (26,37 x 19,29) Excelent condition. Demétre Haralamb Chiparus was a Romanian Art Deco era sculptor who lived and worked in Paris, France. He was one of the most important sculptors of the Art Deco era. Sculptures of Chiparus represent the classical manifestation of Art Deco style in decorative bronze and ivory sculpture. Traditionally, four factors influenced his creative activity *the Russian Ballets of Serge Diaghilev's, Nijinsky and Rubinstein *ancient Egyptian art, *French theatre, music halls and cabarets *Early motion pictures and fashion magazines with dancers, stars and models Which made him create figures with a long, slender, stylized appearance. like the faces of “Persian Dance” and the dress in “Starfish Girl” exactly reproduces the sketch for Goldfish's dress from the ballet “Underwater kingdom” by Lev Annensky. After the tomb of Tutankhamun was discovered in 1922, the art of ancient Egypt...

The fountain. Polychrome terracotta. 20th century, after CARRIER-BELLEUSE
Located in Madrid, ES
The fountain. Polychrome terracotta. 20th century, following models of CARRIER-BELLEUSE, AlbertErnest (Aisne, 1824-Sèvres, 1887). The figure shows a boy, lying down and almost totally naked, with his head enhanced by a golden leaf crown. It is shown with a shell (with touches in gold), taking water from a pitcher next to it, thus recalling the allegories of the rivers or of the birth of the same of Ancient Rome. It is necessary to compare the present work with the one entitled “La Source” by Albert-Ernest Carrier-Belleuse, preserved, for example, at the Art Institute of Chicago or the Portland Museum of Art (of which there are a number of variants, changing the characters and the material used). Albert-Ernest Carrier-Belleuse was a French sculptor and draftsman trained with David d'Angers and at the School of Fine Arts in Paris. He achieved international recognition from his participation in the Salon of the French Artists of 1861 (Third Medal), reaching outstanding works such as various busts of...

Seated Virgin with Child (Sedes Sapientiae) from the 12th Century in Spain
Located in Madrid, ES
Technique: Tempera and oil on wood Dimensions: 25 x 11 x 8 cm Description: This exceptional work from the 12th century represents the Seated Virgin with Child (Sedes Sapientiae), standing out as an artistic treasure from medieval Spain. The portrayal of the Virgin enthroned with the Child on her lap is emblematic of Romanesque art, and this particular piece is a valuable and authentic example of that era. The current polychromy belongs to the Gothic period and overlays the original Romanesque layer. It is crucial to highlight that the current state of the artwork is the original, without any cleaning interventions, imparting a unique authenticity. The work exhibits architectural characteristics typical of Romanesque art, evident in the sides of the throne. The rigidity and symmetry characteristic of this style are reflected in the firm presentation of the Baby Jesus, noticeable in his gesture while holding his son. The Virgin wears a crown, symbolizing her royal character as the Queen of Heaven and Creation. Both figures retain traces of polychromy on the face and attire, adding layers of history and authenticity. While similar Romanesque Virgin...
