Opulent elements for modular use. The architectural structure of DS-21 is created by a metal frame that surrounds individual cushion volumes, seemingly carrying them effortlessly. The opulent elements counteract the clear lines of the frame. They function as modules that can be relocated. DS-21 comes in different upholstery combinations, with leather or fabric covers, and in three different frame widths with matte black or high-gloss chrome-plated metal legs. An armchair rounds out this family of seats. The DS-21 range is complemented by coffee tables and side tables with glass tops in different versions.
This sculpture looks as if it has always stood there. A statement, essentially: I’ve been here forever. And yet: the proportions seem fresh and new, unused and inviting, Classic and modern. DS-21 is the work of Stephan Hürlemann. The Appenzell native studied architecture at ETH Zurich and was the partner of designer Hannes Wettstein, after whose death in 2008 he took over as creative director of the world-renowned Zurich studio. Revolutionary seating concept DS-343 is an armchair that moves when the person seated moves, because the object is constructed not with a Classic seating surface that stops at the backrest, but with one that extends to the height of the pelvis. If one leans backwards, the backrest element, from pelvic height on up, automatically moves along with the user, without any mechanical effort, and solely as a result of the change in the posture of the person seated. And the design is equal to this revolutionary seating concept: The silhouette of the wing chair is defined by the skillful folding of the leather. Dimensionally stabile neck leather in thicknesses of up to 5 mm is skillfully processed by hand to ensure that it continuously cascades over the edges.
We did not bring a designer on board to develop this wing chair, with all due respect: we are not exactly short on expertise in this area. Still, we found that thinking outside the box helps us better understand the human body, its features and needs. Like the De Sede model DS-343, the armchair Rex is based on a patented seat study developed over the last two decades by seat expert and physical therapist Bart Van der Heyden. Rex is an armchair that moves with the movements of the person seated. Changes in posture are not just permitted but even encouraged. The armchair presents itself in a novel architecture. The seat shell does not stop at the backrest as usual but extends to pelvis height instead. This is not only a stylish design element but the elementary basis for this sitting revolution. With the extended seat shell, the person seated assumes a different posture when leaning back: if you lean backwards, only the upper part of the backrest moves backwards. Following the movements of the body, this provides gentle support to the spine and the chest opens automatically. The person seated immediately feels a more open posture, which is accompanied by a freedom of sitting.
Details:
Standard configuration: Substructure coated in silk-grey. Mechanism resistance low.
Upholstery and assembly: SEDEX upholstery with SEDE-Lux padding. High-quality strap suspension. Seat, back and armrest with supporting metal structure and integrated gas pressure spring suspension. Thread color tone on tone.
Function: Shifts in weight adapt the seat and backrest inclination to the respective sitting position. This prevents the typical shearing forces. Armchair rotatable 360°. Headrest infinitely forward-adjustable. Mechanism resistance low or, on request, mechanism resistance strong (better for very large and/or heavy persons).
Substructure: Coated in silk-grey or coated in black-grey on request. Available with coating in different color on request for a surcharge. High-gloss chrome-plated on request for a surcharge. Star base with glides for hard and soft floor coverings.
