A native of Texas, Chuck Mauldin has been painting in oil since the age of twelve. His interest in watercolor and pencil drawing grew during his years spent in Louisiana. With his move back to Texas, he has renewed his focus on oil painting, using this medium in a realistic yet painterly style. Striving to quickly capture color and mood with a direct "alla prima" technique is one of his main objectives in painting outdoors on-location. Cows, cowboys and Native Americans often enrich the landscape in his studio work, while anything can inspire his plein air paintings.

Idealistic Fall Texas Landscape
By Dollie Nabinger
Located in Houston, TX
Pastel colored landscape of Texas in the fall. Signed by the artist in the bottom left hand corner. Framed in an elegant gold frame.
Artist Biography: Landscape artist Dollie Spidle Nabinger was born in Commerce, Texas, raised in Victoria, Texas. Even as a young girl Dollie wanted to be an artist. Her parents supported her from the very start, enrolling her in a Catholic school. Her father personally stretched her first canvases. Dollie credited that loving support for her eventual success as an artist. When Dollie was 13, her talent was already evident. J.F. McCan, a well-known Victoria artist, accepted her as his apprentice. She studied with him for seven years. Next she was off to the Art Students' League in New York for two years' instruction; later, in San Antonio, she studied with Jose Arpa and Harry Anthony DeYoung. In 1955 she spent a summer at the Academie Julian in Paris, France. Dollie was married to Jack E. Nabinger, who handmade and carved many of her frames. They retired in Fredericksburg Texas...

"Daddy Playing in the Mud"
Biography
Johnny Banks (1912-1988)
In my opinion one of the greatest Texas folk artists of all time.
The following information was compiled and submitted by Stephanie Reeves:
John Willard Banks, San Antonio, Texas, African American Folk Artist John
Willard Banks, black self-taught artist, the son of Charlie and Cora
Lee (McIntyre) Banks, was born on November 7, 1912, near Seguin, Texas.
At the age of five his parents took him to San Antonio, where he
attended Holy Redeemer School until the age of nine, when his parents
were divorced and John returned to his grandparents' farm near Seguin.
From childhood Banks's favorite pastime was drawing pictures on his Big
Chief tablet. He later recalled, "As a kid I used to lie flat on my
stomach, drawing and drawing. . . . My mother had to kick me off the
floor to sweep."
While helping out on his grandparents' farm,
Banks completed the tenth grade before striking out on his own. His
favorite activities during his youth were singing in a gospel quartet
and playing baseball. In his adult years he worked in oilfields and
cotton fields, drove a truck, and tended a San Antonio service station.
During World War II he joined the army; he held the rank of sergeant
and was stationed in the Philippines. After the war he returned to San
Antonio, where he worked as a custodian at Kelly Air Force Base, at Fort
Sam Houston, and at a local television station. Banks married Edna Mae
Mitchell in 1928, and they had five children. The marriage ended in
divorce around 1960. In 1963 he married Earlie Smith.
His
art career began in 1978 while he was recuperating from an illness for
which he had been hospitalized. Banks's wife admired her husband's
drawings and secretly took several of them to a San Antonio laundromat.
There she hung the drawings on the wall, offering them for sale at the
price of fourteen dollars. They were purchased and taken to a gallery
for framing. Quite by chance, a San Antonio physician and collector of
works of art by black artists...

Located in Houston, TX
Vendiendo Platanos is a 18 x 12 oil on panel paininting by William Kalwick. This was done on site in Nahuala , Guatemala. A frame has been ordered for the painting.
This Nahuala Coop, 100% women farmer produced washed Guatemala heirloom coffee features sweet, clean and bright aromas of hazelnut. The flavor is rich, with notes of chocolate, citrus and roasted nuts, finishing smooth and lingering.
Nearly the entire population of the municipality is made up of ethnic K'iche' Maya who speak the K'iche' language. The population of the township is estimated to be between 50,000 and 85,000 individuals, about 10% of whom live in the head-town. Statistics vary widely because much of the township's territory and several large villages are also claimed by Nahualá' sister township, Santa Catarina Ixtahuacán.
Kalwick’s paintings cover a wide range of subject matter. However, he is best known for his Guatemalan market scenes, Guatemalan figurative work, and portraits. Recent portrait commissions include Harold Hook, retiring CEO of American General Corp.; Reese Jones, international golf course designer; and Paul Merriman, retiring CEO of Hisco Corp.
Kalwick was honored for the second time with a one-man show sponsored by the United States Embassy at the Museo Ixchel in Guatemala City.
Southwest Art magazine featured Kalwick’s work on the cover and elaborated upon his style in an article titled “Guatemala Days.” He also was featured in Art of the West magazine . Kalwick’s portrait painting was featured in Southwest Art magazine .
