Antique Southeast Asian Filipino Maranao Silver Inlaid Brass Betel Nut Box
Located in Forney, TX
A scarce fine quality antique silver-inlaid solid brass betel nut box (Lutuan), dating to the second half of the 19th / early 20th century, hand-crafted in Mindanao, Philippines. Boxes such as this were used to store the areca nut (also known as the betel nut) which would be wrapped in a betel leaf with lime paste and other ingredients, often tobacco, for chewing. Similar to the European tea caddy, these boxes often served as a way to impress while showing off ones wealth. Betel chewing was prevalent in the southern Philippines as in much of the rest of Southeast Asia. Wealthier Maranao families on Mindanao were able to afford elaborate silver-inlaid brass betel boxes such as this example. Such boxes were used to show off to guests and from which they were offered betel and the other component such as leaves and lime to make up the betel quid. Rare large size, most extant examples of such boxes tend to measure around 5 inches in length. At slightly more than 7.75 inches the example here is larger than most. The distinctive decorative box features a very heavy strong-box like rectangular shaped chest form with canted corners, copper handles, and a conforming hinged lid, lifting open to reveal an interior divided into three compartments covered by four hinged lids. Each of these doors is inlaid with silver in stylized orchid flower patterns. Exceptionally executed throughout, the arabesque silver inlaid exterior is decorated to the top with a large orchid motif within scrolling obid-obid (stylized rope) borders. The front, back and sides are inlaid with sets of stylized tail feathers of the sari-manok bird beneath which are unusual, highly stylized whimsical zoomorphic faces that appear like cat or tiger faces. (Such stylisation is accounted for by Southeast Asian Islamic preferences to avoid the overt and this potentially idolatrous representation of animal and human forms. Designs such as these are drawn from a local design repertoire that has its origins in wood carving. Although the spread of Islam in the Philippines began in the 14th century, mostly through the influence of Muslim merchants from the western Malay Archipelago, decorative arts in this design remain exceptionally rare. This lutuan represents a fine example of Islamic metalwork from the most eastern outreach of Islamic art and civilisation: Mindanao island being significantly further east than even China – artwork from Islamic Southeast Asia remains chronically under-represented in the world’s major collections of Islamic art. PROVENANCE / ACQUISITION Acquired from highly reputable auction house, Austin Auction Gallery, established 1983, Austin, Texas. References Brownrigg, H., Betel Cutters...

Antique French Paris Porcelain Bourdois Bloch Meissen Style Parrot Figure
By Bloch Bourdois, Porcelaine de Paris
Located in Forney, TX
A stunning early 20th century French Belle Époque period Bourdois & Bloch Porcelaine de Paris Meissen style porcelain figure of a parrot. Made in Paris, France, circa 1910, exceptionally executed, exquisitely detailed throughout and displaying brilliant hand painted rich coloring, with a unique pierced beak, realistically modeled with wings slightly open perched atop a naturalistic tree stump base, Signed, underglaze blue crossed arrows mark to lower tree trunk. What truly stands out and is absolutely remarkable is how the maker/artist manged to make this work appear like a completely different sculpture depending on the angle it's viewed from. History: Paris Porcelain (Porcelain de Paris), a term that conjures images of grandeur, elegance, and sophistication; is to France what Dresden Porcelain is to Germany. Porcelain by a variety of makers from a region rather than one maker, it's the collective name given to the various porcelain studios and decorating workshops within and around Paris, France. In this case and many others Porcelain de Paris is also as good if not sometimes better than Dresden, Meissen or Sevres porcelain and is certainly a collectible to look out for. The Bourdoir and Bloch factory was originally founded around 1820 and specialized in producing fine quality porcelain in the style of the famous 18th century factories. This most distinctive figural bird was made by the Paris porcelain factory of Bourdoir and Bloch around 1910. This example bears the August 8, 1887 registered trademark of two blue crossed arrows, used around the time that Eugene Marx Clauss had joined forces with Achille Bloch and Leon Bourdois (who were both collaborators of Samson) and were operating under the name Clauss Co from 1887-1890 in the small factory started by Eugene's grandfather Jean-Marx Clauss in 1788 on rue de la Pierre-Levee in Paris. This Parisian antique porcelain parrot...

Loetz For Boudon And Klur Ruby Papillon Glass And Gilt Metal Mounted Vase
By Loetz Glass
Located in Dallas, TX
Loetz For Boudon And Klur Gilt Metal Monted Glass Vase. A highly sought after vase culminating the zenith of Loetz and the Art Nouveau design. Czech Republic Circa 1900 Rubin Ruby Papillon Decor Metal mount with indistinct impressed marks for Boudon and Klur Height: 10.5 Inches x 8 Inches wide x 5 Inches deep Condition: Very good with wear commensurate of age and use with some loss to gilt, The Loetz glassworks existed in Klostermuhle, Austria, for just over a hundred years, starting from 1840. But its heyday was during the life-time of Max Ritter Von Spaun, grandson of the original Johann Loetz who had founded the company. Von Spaun took over the company in 1879 and ran it until 1908, a year before his death. He was assisted by Eduard Prochaska, his technical specialist, and together they invented, designed and produced a whole series of wonderful new types of glass, taking out several patents and winning awards at all the major world exhibitions during the 1890's and the first years of the new century. The Loetz company were amongst the leaders in Art Nouveau design and expecially in irridescent art glass. "Papillon" glass, like the vase on the left, is sometimes known today as "oil spot" glass. Another favourite Loetz colouring was irridized glass with pulled trails called "Phenomenon" glass. There were irridized vases with ribbons of metallic colours winding over the surface, and many spectacular designs with applied trails of beautiful colours, or simply pulled out of the body of the glass to form handles or decoration. About 1900 the company started collaborating with outside designers, and some great artists designed pieces for Lotz, notably Joseph Hofmann, Koloman Moser, Maria Kirchner, and Hofstatter. In 1908 Loetz was taken over by Max Von Spaun's son, also called Max, and although it struggled financially (going through bankruptcy in 1911 and again in 1931) there were several great designers whose work was produced by Loetz during those years and through the art deco period. These included Adolf Beckert...
