Palatial Sculpture of Henri Robert-Marcel Duchamp by Ursula Meyer
By Ursula Meyer
Located in Manhasset, NY
Palatial bust of Henri Robert-Marcel Duchamp by Ursula Meyer. The sculpture itself measures 47" in height, 27.5" in width, and 21.5" depth acquired from the home of the most prolific American conceptual artist. Signed and dated. Provenance: From the Estate of Ann Pollon Re: The Collection of Ursula Meyer. Descendant. Acquired from the artist. Henri-Robert-Marcel Duchamp French: (28 July 1887-2 October 1968) was a French-American painter, sculptor, chess player, and writer whose work is associated with Cubism, Dada, and conceptual art He was careful about his use of the term Dada and was not directly associated with Dada groups. Duchamp is commonly regarded, along with Pablo Picasso and Henri Matisse, as one of the three artists who helped to define the revolutionary developments in the plastic arts in the opening decades of the 20th century, responsible for significant developments in painting and sculpture. Duchamp has had an immense impact on twentieth-century and twenty first-century art, and he had a seminal influence on the development of conceptual art. By the time of World War I he had rejected the work of many of his fellow artists (such as Henri Matisse) as "retinal" art, intended only to please the eye. Instead, Duchamp wanted to use art to serve the mind. Ursula Meyer was a German-born American sculptor, art-focused academician, and fine art critic, who proved an influential player in the transmission of and appreciation for European born Modernism to the United States in the post-World War II era. At first a ceramicist beholden to the teachings of 1930s Germany’s Bauhaus and Italy’s Futurists, she eventually became a creator and exponent of a crisp, geometry-focused sculptural lexicon in ceramics, and later wood and metal sculpture. Her legacy includes a decades-long exploration of Minimalism, as well as experimentations in creating and deciphering Conceptual and Expressive genres. Born in Hanover, Germany in 1915 to Ernst Josef Meyer and Elsa Katzenstein, Ursula Meyer is recorded as having “studied with former Bauhaus masters after the Bauhaus itself had closed under threat of National Socialism” in 1933. Spanning the years 1934 through 1937, Ursula’s Bauhaus tutorial is not fully documented, but it may well have included at least brief study with the French-born Marguerite Friedlaender Wildenhain (1896-1985), the first woman to earn the Master Potter certification in Germany, and who worked with Paul Klee, Wassily Kandinsky, Max Kehan and Gerhard Marcks (1889-1981). Meyer is recorded as having directly worked with Marcks, as well as with Otto Lindig...

Bust of David von Schulzenheim, owner of Gröönsö castle, signed by Erik Gustav Göthe, a principle of Sergel and inscribed: David Schulz v. Schulzenheim. / MDCCCXXI plaster, Dated 1821 This is a bust of Dr. David von Schulzenheim, owner of Grönsöö Slott. In the 18th Century Grönsöö Slott was owned by the famed Stockholm doctor David von Schultzenheim. Dr. von Schulzenheim introduced the smallpox vaccine to Sweden and served the public’s health needs during its crisis from 1873 – 1874. When not in public health service, he devoted a significant amount of passion and money to beautify the palace and park in the romantic spirit of the time. The castle blossomed towards the end of the 18th century with the palace’s upper floors serving as the residential apartments of the family and furnished in exquisite Gustavian and late Gustavian style. Never one to rest on his laurels in science or design, in 1786, with the smallpox outbreak leveling, Dr. von Schulzenheim ordered the construction of a Chinese...

Italian Marble Bust of The Grandparents, Titled: Rimembranze, Signed Vichi
By Ferdinando Vichi
Located in New York, NY
A monumental 19th C. Italian Marble Bust of The Grandparents, Titled: Rimembranze, Signed Vichi. Presenting an exquisite Italian masterpiece from the 1800s, we have a captivating white Carrara marble bust group entitled "Rimembranze" (Remembrance). This remarkable sculpture portrays an endearing elderly couple locked in a tender embrace, their love emanating through the gentle touch of the man's hand on the lady's chin and face. The profound affection and mesmerizing connection between them are beautifully captured in the expressions gracing their faces. Renowned for his exceptional talent, Ferdinando Vichi meticulously crafted this sculpture, paying meticulous attention to every detail. The couple's wrinkles, veins, and musculature, as well as the delicate rendering of their clothing and expressions, are expertly brought to life by Vichi's craftsmanship, establishing this artwork as one of his most remarkable and meticulously executed pieces. The sculpture rests on a contrasting black marble base with the title "Rimembranze" etched into the side, further enhancing its aesthetic appeal. Vichi's artistry is truly captivating. The old woman's knitted shawl, meticulously fashioned out of marble, appears astonishingly lifelike, while the choice of beautiful white marble exudes a refreshing allure. The old man's playful gesture of touching the lady's chin is captured with natural grace and warmth. Vichi's exceptional ability to sculpt fabric with such finesse creates an illusion of softness that defies the medium of marble itself. The remarkable attention to detail, from the intricately carved wrinkles and smile lines to the depiction of a lifetime shared in joy, evokes a profound sense of admiration. Ferdinando Vichi, a member of the esteemed Florentine School and associated with the Bazzanti Gallery in Florence, Italy, was part of a talented group of Tuscan sculptors. His body of work encompasses a wide range of subjects, including romantic busts, orientalist themes, and Renaissance-inspired models. Similar to his contemporaries from the late nineteenth century, Vichi often drew inspiration from romantic and tender subjects. This is exemplified in the beautifully detailed marble group depicting an elderly man's playful courtship and deep love for his wife. This 19th-century Italian marble group titled "Rimembranze" is signed by the esteemed artist Ferdinando Vichi, who was associated with the renowned Pietro Barzanti...
