Artists Statement
Since starting to paint in 1981 my mainly plein aire landscapes have used a mechanical, rather than lyrical or painterly, approach. This probably puts my observational paint – by – numbers pictures at a creative and expressive disadvantage. But it doers prove conducive to a structural or compositional kind of drawing over which are applied layers of oil paint to deliver idiosyncratic textural and atmospheric effects. Furthermore, a Ben Nicholson – inspired dichotomy between foreground rooftops or architecture and a naturalistic marine or landscape background makes a chosen plastic and temperamental approach apt.
So when in 2004 I was inspired by the much loved master relief printmaker John Liddell 1925-2005) to try my hand at linocut I found a process ideally suited to my mechanical bent it has been a love affair ever since. The workshop he founded in 1991 Poole Printmakers is a safe haven, an intimate co-operative near Poole Quay, and some of the most scenic terrain in Britain. It is also an area where my art career started in 1978 and inspired my early book Art in Poole and Dorset, published by Poole Historical Trust, 1987. Many blissful and absorbing hours over the last 13 years have yielded a large body of linocut prints in which I exercise those mechanical and reproductive qualities proper to the medium. This print of a pine tree uses kitakata Japanese tissue chine collé to depict the warmth and colour of early autumnal light. It is then backed onto Hahnemule printmaking paper. The subject matter is from Ashton Court Estate in Bristol. This body of work is based on the book by Suzanne Simard, 'Finding the Mother Tree'. Trees communicate via mycorrhizal fungi to trade water and other nutrients. Ancient and mature trees nurture their offspring via these networks, as well as trading nutrients between other species. Botanist Simard has spent years working on this theory as part of a wider body of work, discovering what it means for forests, the climate and the wider Anthropocene. My work explores the ecological sublime and an appreciation of the majesty of nature. I use detailed intaglio etching, drypoint, lithography and chine collé to draw the viewer into an ethereal landscape that has an impact on our sense of place in relation to the natural world. I use primarily black and white with natural tones of chine collé and sometimes layers of lithographic texture to introduce warmth to the stark palette and to invoke a sublime emotional connection. I work from sketches, photographs, notes and memory to create my prints.

Fiona Hamilton is a printmaker based in Bristol. Interested in process she uses a combination of mediums, both traditional and contemporary, to produce unique imagery, often as one off pieces or in small limited editions. She currently works in silkscreen, cyanotype and foil.

Kate Willows began printmaking 15 years ago, initially working with etching and drypoint. Exploring printmaking methods that could be carried out safely in her home studio, Kate eventually settled on linoprinting as the best method for her style of printmaking. Kate creates original, colourful and playful linocut prints, which often reflect her quirky sense of humour. She is especially interested in the use of colour and how this can be used to create vibrant and bold prints. Influences include Antonio Frasconi, Eric Ravilious, Robert Tavener, Edward Bawden and Kathleen Hale.
