Archibald Knox
Liberty Celtic ‘Beowulf’ Planter
By Liberty
Co., James Carter, Archibald Knox
Located in Wormelow, Herefordshire
An early 20th century Arts and Crafts style Celtic planter or jardiniere and pedestal in terracotta after a design for Liberty’s London (stamped) by celebrated designer Archibald Knox.
Titled ‘Beowulf’, this large Celtic plant pot designed by Knox was manufactured for Liberty’s by J. Carter and Co, as is stamped on the socle. Carters made stone garden ware and terracotta for Liberty between 1900 and 1910.
Often unstamped, Celtic style planters like these are often mistakenly attributed to the Compton Pottery. However, we can be certain that this one was made for the luxury department store in London due to the ‘Liberty & Co’ stamp on the inside.
Archibald Knox (1864-1933) was a pioneer of modern 20th century design. He was Liberty’s primary designer at the height of their success during the early 20thcentury, his balance of Arts and Crafts, Modernism, Celtic Revival...

Monumental Trough Planter
Stand Large French Rustic Oak XL Serving Bar Antique
Located in London, GB
An extraordinary and extremely rare, extra-large trunk-hewn trough planter on stand in lovely antique condition. Strikingly large, decoratively shapely and wonderfully characterful, this one-of-a-kind statement piece could be used indoors or outdoors as a planter – and could even double up as a stylish champagne bar on special occasions. However it’s displayed, this incredible gem won’t fail to add spectacular rustic splendour and a magnificent aesthetic of bygone traditional craftsmanship to any setting.
Traditionally crafted, the oak tree trunk would have been hand hewn and hollowed to create the animal trough and still has the original notched grooves to the underside, showing where it would once have sat on a larger farmyard frame. The present stand is traditionally crafted using pegged mortise and tenon joints and has lovely, slightly curving, ski-like legs in the antique southern French style, which really add to its beautifully imperfect rustic appeal.
All in all this is a quite extraordinary planter and an incredible find. Its breathtaking scale (we’ve never seen one even close to this size) and stunning, unapologetically rustic, almost Brutalist appeal, make it the perfect statement piece, which could be used either inside or out, for those looking for a fantastic one-of-a-kind treasure.
CONDITION
This is in very good antique condition. Extremely large and heavy, this super piece was traditionally crafted and is structurally sound and sturdy. The trunk planter has lovely gnarled, aged appeal and the base has to-be-expected minor marks and signs of wear to show its age, which only enhance its aged rustic appeal. The planter sits snuggly in the frame and can be removed for transporting separately. If using indoors, it could be waxed as preferred. Originally the top of the base may have had decorative securing struts running depth-ways across the top, the peg joints for which can still be seen and which a craftsman could recreate if required. Overall this is a truly incredible XL planter...

Louis XV Style Gilt-Bronze Jardinière by Maison Alphonse Giroux, French
By Alphonse Giroux et Cie
Located in Brighton, West Sussex
A Louis XV style gilt bronze Jardinière by Maison Alphonse Giroux.
Stamped 'Maison Alph GIROUX' a Paris'.
This elegant jardinière is in the form of an oval basket suspended between ropes by two finely cast putti. The jardinière retains its original painted metal liner.
Giroux (House of Alphonse Giroux et Cie)
Maison Giroux was founded by Francois-Simon-Alphonse Giroux in 1799 at 7 rue du Coq-Saint-Honoré, Paris. The store, specializing in small luxury goods and curiosities, expanded rapidly in the first half of the 19th century,
Francois oversaw the manufacture and design of small items of furniture until his death in 1848. He won the 'Prix de Rome' in 1825, and a silver medal at the Paris Exhibition of 1834.
Under the direction of Giroux's sons, Alphonse-Gustave and André, the company flourished and became by the late 1860s one of the most pre-eminent Parisian Maison de Haute Luxe (luxury stores).
In 1867, Ferdinand Duvinage...
