The finely chased and original gilt bronze case depicting Orpheus playing his lyre with an eight-day bell striking movement, outside countwheel, backplate initialled and numbered 'A C D 1516’.
The dial with Roman numerals and inscribed Riccardo Pacinoti of Lavourne. It is a French movement (silk suspension) striking the hour and half hour. The case in the form of an oblong pillar cast with anthemium and cornucopia beneath a draped urn and a laurel wreath, flanked by the figure of Orpheus playing his lyre, the stepped plinth cast with wonderfully detailed underworld scenes, on leaf scroll feet.
In excellent condition the clock case has been cleaned with the movement completely overhauled and serviced to the highest standard by a specialist restorer.

This elegant clock set was created by Raingo Frères and Jean Jules Salmson (French, 1823–1902). Raingo Frères, founded in 1832, was famous for its astronomical clocks, one of which is now in the Windsor Castle collection. The set is complemented by bronzes from the renowned sculptor Salmson, a regular exhibitor at the Paris Salon.
The garniture includes a central mantel clock and two matching eight-light candelabra, all expertly crafted from ormolu and white marble. The clock features a central column topped with a finely detailed sculptural group of bacchantes holding grapevine garlands, with cherubs draping them over large vases. The white enamel dial is framed by an acanthus ormolu mount and rests on a base with twin ormolu lion feet.

The grained gilt tapering case has a folding handle with bevelled glass panel to the top, bevelled glass panels to the sides and a solid rear plate with hand setting function and start/stop lever, signed Thomas Mercer and numbered 1184, dating from 1974
The silvered dial signed Thomas Mercer, with Roman numerals, subsidiary seconds dial and a state of wind indicator. Blued steel hands. The substantial eight day chain fusee movement with maintaining power, Earnshaw type detent escapement with a free-sprung palladium helical balance spring and heavy bimetallic balance. The original black leather tooled travelling case with lift out front cover is lined in blue velvet and the original safety winding key is stored in the top.
Thomas Mercer was founded in 1858, and became one of the greatest chronometer makers of the 19th and 20th centuries. Ernest Shakleton used a Mercer chronometer on the 1914 Imperial Trans-Antartic Expedition, after the Endurance became trapped and destroyed in the pack ice, he heroically journeyed in a whaleboat, the James Caird, to South Georgia to get help for his stranded compatriots. An 18th century balloon shaped bracket or table clock by John Leroux of Charing Cross, dating from circa 1790. The waisted case surmounted by a brass pineapple finial over a drum housing the movement. The dial is behind a hinged convex glazed cast brass bezel to front and brass carrying handles to sides, over hipped concave-sided section forming the base. The front has an applied mount of a sunburst mask, the rear with keyhole shaped door incorporating fine scroll-pierced sound fret set within the frame of the case, on generous cavetto moulded skirt base incorporating break-arch recess to apron and with ogee bracket feet.
The five knopped pillar twin fusee bell striking movement with rounded angles to the rectangular plates and anchor escapement regulated by a long bob pendulum with an effective length of approximately 11.5 inches, the backplate signed J. Leroux, London to centre, the 7 inch circular single sheet silvered brass Roman numeral dial signed Leroux, Charing Cross to centre, with fine pierced steel hands and Arabic five minutes to outer track.
