Rare Garniture of George III Baskets, London, 1778, Philip Freeman
By Robert Hennell
Located in London, GB
This extremely rare and fine garniture of George III neo classical baskets were made in London in 1778 by Philip Freeman. The Baskets all stand on a square pedestal foot which is pierced with horizontal pails and roundels, as well as being engraved with prick dot designs. The Classical vase shaped main bodies are also pierced with horizontal pails and roundels and the front of each piece displays a disc cartouche engraved with a contemporary Crest. The rim and swing handle, instead of being decorated with beading, are unusually engraved with various prick dot and bright cut bands, including stylised flower heads. Each basket is in excellent condition, has a blue glass liner and is fully marked in the foot. The baskets are of a very rare decorative design and Philip Freeman was known for producing unusual baskets and pails, although his work does not survive in great quantity. These are also unusual in that they stand on a pierced foot, echoing the designs on the main body. The smaller baskets would have been used for cream and the larger ones for sugar, however it is extremely rare to find a garniture. They are almost always found singly or in pairs, in sizes. A very rare Classical garniture of outstanding quality. Measures: Height of the sugar basket, to the rim: 5.4 inches, 13.5cm. Height of the cream basket...

Scandinavian Modern Swedish Bowl by Carl Harry Stalhane and Maker Rorstrand
By Rörstrand, Carl-Harry Stålhane
Located in London, GB
Swedish ceramic artist Carl-Harry Stålhane (1920- 1990) played a major role in popularizing Swedish pottery during the 20th century, working for more than three decades at Rörstrand, one of the oldest ceramics manufacturers in Europe. During his long tenure at Rörstrand, Stålhane was responsible for small-batch studio pieces, mass-produced tableware , and all manner of decorative accessories . Born in 1920 in Mariestad, Sweden, Stålhane began working at Rörstrand in 1939 as a decorative painter, assisting Danish-Finnish ceramic artist, designer, and sculptor Gunnar Nylund (1904-1997). During this time, Stålhane decorated various ceramic pieces, most notably Nylund’s Flambé range (1939s), quickly establishing himself as a talented ceramic artist. Inspired by the desire for new products during the postwar economic boom, Stålhane went from being a talented decorator to an exceptional ceramic artist. In 1943, Stålhane caught the eye of Swedish artist Isaac Grünewald (1889-1946), who was visiting Rörstrand. Grünewald was so impressed with Stålhane’s work that he took him on as a student, and from 1943 to 1946, Stålhane studied art at Grünewald's Art School in Stockholm. Subsequently from 1947 until 1948, he studied sculpture at Académie Colarossi in Paris. During the 1950s, Stålhane’s work appeared in several solo exhibitions in Sweden, the United Kingdom, and the United States. His Blanca Tableware range (c. 1955) won numerous international prizes and was in high-demand. In 1958, Stålhane succeeded Nylund as Artistic Director and Chief Designer at Rörstrand. In 1960, Stålhane unveiled a new collection at Stockholm’s Galerie Blanche. Featuring dark stoneware pieces made from local clays, this collection represented a bold departure from the soft, restrained shapes of the 1950s. It has since been praised for its precient aesthetic that would influence the look of ceramics for more than a decade. From 1963 until 1971, Stålhane taught ceramics at the Art Industrial School in Gothenburg. For a short time, he also was the Design Director at the Swedish factory Upsala Ekeby, which in addition to porcelain, produced tile, brick, and glass. Stålhane eventually left Rörstrand in 1973 in order to establish his own ceramic company, Designhuset, in Lidköping, where he further experimented with local clays and minerals. Stålhane continued to work until his death in 1990. Today, Designhuset is a school for ceramists and model-makers. Over the course of his career, Stålhane created several public works for The Commerce Trust Company in Kansas City, Missouri, and for Volvo in Gothenburg, Sweden. His work is represented at several international museums, including Stockholm’s Nationalmuseum and New York’s MoMA. Rörstrand is the second oldest brand of ceramics in Europe and can be found in homes all across Sweden and Europe. Rörstrand’s long legacy includes some of Europe’s most iconic ceramics collections including Swedish Grace, Mon Amie, Ostindia, Filippa...

Antique Boxed Indian Colonial Silver Salver (1842)
By George Gordon Co 1
Located in Jesmond, Newcastle Upon Tyne
A magnificent, fine and impressive antique Indian Colonial silver salver by George Gordon Co - boxed; part of our antique salver collection. This magnificent antique Indian Colonial silver salver has a circular shaped form onto three bracket style feet. The surface of this antique silver salver is embellished with a broad, flat engraved floral, scrolling leaf and opposing scroll decorated border. The decoration to the surface incorporates a central contemporary engraved presentation inscription 'Presented to Capt H.A. Thompson 50th Reg M.N.P. By Colonel Green and his Brother Officers, in acknowledgement of his unremitted EXERTOONS as Mess Secretary for a period of nearly six years during the whole of which times his Conciliatory and Obliging demeanours have so essentially contributed to the HARMONY and well being of the Regimental Mess, December 1842'. The rim of this magnificent sterling silver salver is embellished with a fine and impressive fruiting vine decorated border, accented with large leaf designs and grape clusters. The salver is supported by three cast scroll decorated bracket style feet. This magnificent salver is fitted to the original hinged oak wood presentation box, with a satin and velvet lined interior. The exterior surface of the box is fitted with brass mounts, in addition to a vacant cartouche to the cover; the mounts are a fine feature and indicate the high quality of the piece. This boxed Indian silver salver embodies fine craftsmanship and rich cultural heritage, making it an exceptional gift for weddings, anniversaries, retirements or corporate presentations. At home, it lends refinement and a sense of tradition when displayed on a sideboard, dining table or within a cabinet. Condition This antique silver salver is a superior gauge of silver, exceptional quality and in exceptional condition. The flat engraved and engraved decoration is all very crisp. The original presentation box shows some indications of wear, in keeping with age. The Indian maker's mark struck to the underside of the salver is very clear. Reflections in photographs may detract from the true representation of this example of silver serving trays. Dimensions Diameter 34cm/13.39' Diameter of surface 23cm/9.06' Height 3.5cm/1.38' Weight 40.8 troy ounces/1270.3g Maker: George Gordon Co Date: 1842 Origin: Madras...
