From our Decorative collection, we’re pleased to offer this rare and highly detailed collection of 15 miniature Napoleonic Military hats, confidently attributed to the French artist Charles Sandré. Each model represents a different style of military headgear worn by French regiments in the early 19th century, including shakos, bearskins, corsican and Czapkas helmets, with regimental distinctions carefully recreated in miniature.
The hats are presented individually on custom-made steel stands and display a wide range of detail, from cockades and cords to plumes and regimental insignia. Included in the collection are examples from cavalry, infantry, grenadiers, chasseurs and artillery units. Colours, finishes and trimmings reflect the full spectrum of early 19th century French military dress, all worked with a level of precision and charm that has made Sandré’s work widely collected.
Charles Sandré worked between 1895 and 1915 and is widely known for producing finely made miniature military figures some of which reside in the entrance hall at the Army Museum in the Hôtel des Invalides, Paris . These models were most likely created during that time or shortly after, with surviving examples now considered rare. Sandré’s work is valued both as decorative military art and as a personal response to historical memory, offering a detailed look at the variety and richness of Napoleonic military dress.

From our Accessories collection, we are delighted to offer this Dunhill ‘Carlton’ Spider Web Table Lighter. The Lighter Gold Plated lighter was produced in partnership with Carlton Ware with the ceramic body produced by Stoke on Trent potters Carlton (Carlton Ware). The body has been hand painted with a spider web design amongst blossoming flowers and two dragonflies. The Lighter is embossed to the front Dunhill and bears the registration number to the inside of the pivoting arm 737418. The base of the lighter is stamped Dunhill, Lighter. The Lighter dates to the middle of the 20th century circa 1957.
Carlton Ware was established in 1890 by James Frederick Wiltshaw, William Herbert Robinson and James Alcock Robinson trading under the name of Wiltshaw and Robinson. The trademark “Carlton Ware” was introduced in 1894, and the company’s factory was renamed the Carlton Works. The company changed its name multiple times and changed hands finally reaching the name ‘Carlton Ware Ltd’ in 1958. In 1966 the company was sold to Arthur Wood and Sons before coming under financial pressure in the late 1980s being forced into receivership in 1989 and production ending in 1992. In 1997 the Carlton Ware brand was resurrected by Francis Joseph of the Carlton Ware Design Centre, Roslyn Works, Stoke-on-Trent. It continues to manufacture novelty items aimed at the collectors’ market today.
Dunhill Lighters specifically the classic petrol lift arm table lighter was introduced by Dunhill in 1928 running until the introduction of gas in the 1960’s. This particular Carlton Wear example was first introduced in the Dunhill catalogue in 1957. The body was created in partnership with Stoke-on-Trent potters Carlton Ware. Carlton Ware produced three different examples to compliment the Dunhill body a fish underwater design, a chinoiserie pagoda design and the spider web as seen here.
Dunhill Alfred Dunhill was Born September 30th 1872. From 1890 Dunhill ran a company that sold motoring accessories through mail order under the name Dunhill’s Motorities. In 1902 he opened a shop on Conduit Street, Mayfair which sold clothing...

A very fine and scarce French pair silver Baptismal oil containers in its original leather fitted travelling case dating from 1850. The two cylindrical shaped oil containers are conjoined and both have tight fitting covers mounted with crosses. The oil containers have engraved initials OC and SC probably denoting oil and incense which would have been used in the baptismal ceremony. The identical lids too are similarly marked to ensure that these are not mixed up. The containers appear to have a slightly gilded finish to the interior and the oil containers are engraved to the bases and date 1850. A large Staunton style chess set with Ebonised and Boxwood weighted chess pieces. The pieces with wide bases for added stability, underside of each chess piece being covered with felt allowing the pieces to slide more easily across the chess board. The chess set comprises of thirty-two pieces, four Knights featuring the head and neck of a horse. Two kings, being the tallest pieces at 11½ cm high, both with a crown topped with a cross whilst the two Queens feature a coronet topped with a tiny ball (10 cm high). The four Rooks are towers (castles) with a crenelation top and the four Bishops with mitres. The sixteen Pawns are the smallest pieces at 5½ cm high and are topped by a plain ball. All the pieces with a collar except the rooks and knights, with a single white Rook with a red crown painted onto the top.
