Japanese Fine Antique Gilt and Red Lacquer Lotus Bud Flower, Edo Period 19th C
Located in South Burlington, VT
From our recent Japanese acquisitions, a rare find
Antique Original Japanese temple "blossoming lotus" flower bud stem including its original red lacquer display base. This finely hand carved wood and lacquered gold flower stem was made for a Buddhist 19th century temple altar. Its flower blossoms and leaves symbolize the stages of the path toward enlightenment. The individual parts of each lotus is carved separately then joined in an arrangement and inserted in altar vessels.
Also called "Jyôka" , it is placed on or next to an altar in a Buddhist temple. Made with meticulous techniques. In Buddhism, the lotus is an important symbol of divine enlightenment because it blooms into beautiful flowers while growing in mud. Tsunehana means "a flower that continues to bloom forever" and "a flower that does not wither." For this reason, the flowers represented are in different stages of their life, unfolded lotus leaves, buds and full flowers, thus symbolizing the journey towards Buddhist enlightenment.
This lovely Japanese antique gilt Lotus flower is an early survivor, circa 1840, and a hard to find treasure that was originally placed on or around a temple altar.
This ensemble consists of a single stem, the top most flower, and the bottom leaf- all mounted in the original square red lacquer display base. A gold gilt 3.5 inch long tortoise "minogame" is affixed to the base as seen in the photo.
Its attractive original old patina coupled with much of the original gilding remaining present is just the way we like to find them.
Dimensions: With original red lacquer display stand Height, 17 inches height and 9 inches in width. The lotus flower stem alone measures 16 inches in height.
Provenance: acquired from a Kyoto Japanse monk and collector

China Extra Large Natural Marble Stone "Painting" Magnificent Mountain Peak
Located in South Burlington, VT
This Chinese extraordinary natural marble stone painting of a mountain range in green and white colors is called a dream stone Shih-hua.
It is a huge monumental masterwork of nature. Totally natural.
Dimensions:
Hardwood frame: 62.5 inches tall and 88 inches length
Site: 54.5 inches tall and 80 inches length
This thin marble stone painting is approximately 3/8 inch thick and is cut from a large slab of rough material revealing a unique, incredible pattern in soft green and white colors.
This unique work of art was from historic Dali marble found in the Cangshan mountains of western China. These mysterious mountains, unique in the world, are known for yielding incredible and fantastic natural landscaped works of art created over tens of millions of years from mineral inclusions that affected the process of ancient organic material which transformed into limestone and finally resulted in marble- a metamorphic hard stone.
This art form is centuries of years old since the Ming dynasty. Dream stones became favored art in the west particularly since the 19th century when French collectors named them Pierres de reve.
History of Green Flower dream stone paintings:
“Green Flower” dream stone paintings known in China as Shui Mo or Chinese painting stone, were cut from stone found on Shuang Yang mountain in Dali moutains Captivating compositions, they might remind us of a long string of rugged mountain caps from a distance. These dream stones are cut from a scarce regional stone yielding notoriously “fuzzy” detailed paintings. To find examples possessing clear, contrasting detail like this one is indeed a rare find. Fine stone paintings like this example are rare as access to and availability of resource material diminishes. After a thin coating of wax is carefully applied to its surface to protect and reveal its beautiful subtle colors, this stone painting is signed upper right position with poetic verse and seal of an artisan who describes its majestic beauty as

Chinese extraordinary natural stone painting "Restless Sea and Waves" #6 unique painting
This Chinese extraordinary natural stone "painting" of sea and waves in action in white and gray colors is called a dream stone Shih-hua. In ancient China, it is a well-known fact that several types of small dogs were bred and were favored pet gifts between emperors and kings including Lion Dogs, Pekingese and Lo-sze breeds. Some Lo-sze are pictured wearing collars with bells a frequent combination fancied by European royalty of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Lo-sze or pugs were prized for their compact body, good bones, flat face, square jaw, short coat, curled tail, side set back ears, and temperate disposition.
History:
Placing stone animals in important tombs can be traced back at least to the Qin Dynasty (221-206 BCE), some two thousand years ago. In ancient times, stone animals and human figures placed before imperial tombs symbolized royal power and privilege in addition to decorative functions.

Ancient American "Human Effigy" Stone Paint Pallet, Anasazi Culture 900 AD
Located in South Burlington, VT
Early American Pre-Historic Human Effigy Stone Paint Pallet, Anasazi culture 900 AD
All stone carvings from America's Prehistoric southwest are scarce. The majority of known carved stones come from the
Mimbres, Hohokam or Casas cultures. So examples of stone carvings from the Anasazi culture
(circa 900–1300 AD) are rare especially human forms which are the rarest and some consider most desirable.
This pallet is likely unique.
The distinguishing characteristic of our paint pallet from the Anasazi culture is its creation from red sandstone- a material that was not used by
the Mimbres, Hohokam or Casas cultures.
Dimensions: 9.25 inches tall, 4.87 inches wide
Quality: it exhibits no less than seven distinct pigment colors on the surface. The obverse has a distinctive head with three dimensional eyes and nose; there are four horizontal bands of color: red, white, dark red/white and black. The center of the pallet has a distinctive white pigment and the border is executed in both red and black. There are two well-defined legs, one red and the other black, which terminate in distinctive feet. On the reverse we find in the center seven clearly defined concentric painted rings, each a different color.
Provenance: old New England collection
Lifetime guarantee of authenticity: All of our works of art come with our lifetime authenticity guarantee.

Shakespeare’s Sir John Falstaff Examining Recruits 1866, Signed Ball Hughes
Located in South Burlington, VT
From an important thirty year old New England collection of American Folk Art Pyrography
Robert Ball Hughes (British-American, 1804-1868)
This original period framed 1866 pyrography on wood panel was created after the painting by Sir John Gilbert (English, 1817-1897) with detailed description and dedication written on the back of the panel using the same technique. A photographed rubbing of the reverse dedication will be included and is part of this description (photo).
Frame: 20 inches high and 28.5 inches wide; Site: 13.25 inches high and 22 inches wide
This painting depicts the episode from Shakespeare’s Henry VI Part II Act III Scene V in which
Sir John Falstaff inspects the recruits mustered by Justice Robert Shallow and his
cousin Silence. Falstaff sits in a chair surrounded by his cronies whilst Bardolph leads Bullcalf forward.
Hayman’s treatments of Falstaff reviewing recruits are perhaps among the most successful depictions of a theatrical scene in British painting. The tableau vibrates with the energy that he brought to his Vauxhall supper box scenes of games and dancing, and is filled with the humour and observation of his portraiture. Every figure is in motion and proclaims its own individuality.
About Robert Ball Hughes (British-American, 1804-1868)
Known as Ball Hughes and also using that as a signature, this man was a sculptor and wax-portrait artist. He was born in London, England, and died in Dorchester, Massachusetts. He studied and exhibited at the Royal Academy in London as well as at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and the National Academy of Design in New York City. He emigrated to New York in 1829, having earned much prestige in England. In New York, he received many commissions for portrait busts in bronze and wax. Among his subjects were John Trumbull, Alexander Hamilton, and Washington Irving. From 1838 to 1840, he worked in Philadelphia and from 1840, worked in Boston. In his final years, he began to produce pyrographic wood pictures (pyro engravings or "poker pictures"), including The Witches of MacBeth (c. 1840), Babylonian Lions (1856), Don Quixote in His Study (1863), The Trumpeter (1864), General Grant...

Placing stone animals and human figures along spirit paths in front of important tombs can be traced back at least to the Qin Dynasty (221-206 BCE), some two thousand years ago. In ancient times, stone animals and human figures placed before imperial tombs symbolized royal power and
privilege in addition to decorative functions. Life size “spirit path” stone horse sculptures are known and can be viewed from Ming dynasty tombs including thirteen imperial tombs of the Ming Dynasty scattered over an area of forty square kilometers in Changping District to the northwest of Beijing.
