Chasing the Sleigh, Original Holiday Greeting Card Christmas Illustration
By Charlotte Sternberg
Located in Fort Washington, PA
Original Holiday Greeting Card Christmas Illustration featuring a snowy scene with dogs chasing a horse-drawn sleigh Medium: Egg Tempera on Illustration Board Signature: Unsigned Charlotte Joan Sternberg was born in Meriden, Connecticut in 1920. Early on, she became interested in art, and her parents encouraged her efforts. She attended public schools in the area, as well as taking art classes at the technical school. Afterwards, she attended the Yale School of Art. Her fellow classmates included Rudolph Zallinger, who executed the dinosaur mural at the Peabody Museum in New Haven; Jean Day Zallinger, renowned book illustrator; and Edward Paier, founder of the Paier College of Art. It was there that she became interested in egg tempera, and most of her well-known artwork was done in this medium. She was one of a number of Yale artists who revived this medium.(She did not work professionally in oils, although she sometimes used gouache or watercolor.) She went on to a long career in commercial illustration. She worked extensively for J.Walter Thompson, doing advertising art for such companies as Esso (later Exxon), Textron, and Lederle pharmaceuticals. While she did a variety of subjects, she was best known for her Americana themes, particularly snow scenes of historic New England. Many of these pieces were published as Christmas cards for American Artists Group. She also taught for many years at the Paier College of Art. She also did a number of limited edition prints for Greenwich Workshop. Her art is used on such items as tapestry pillows, puzzles, and decorative flags. She was commissioned to do several portraits, including those of Gov.John Lodge...

Paysage d Automne à Nesle la Vallée by Gustave Loiseau - Landscape painting
By Gustave Loiseau
Located in London, GB
*PLEASE NOTE UK BUYERS WILL ONLY PAY 5% VAT ON THIS PURCHASE. Paysage d'Automne à Nesle la Vallée by Gustave Loiseau (1865-1935) Oil on canvas 65 X 81.2 cm (25 ⁵/₈ x 32 inches) Signed lower left, G Loiseau Executed in 1898 This work is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity issued by Didier Imbert. Painted in 1898 this oil landscape, shows Loiseau’s sophisticated approach to capturing rural landscapes. In both 1890 and 1896, Loiseau exhibited in the Impressionist exhibitions, with this piece proving indicative of the level of artistic maturity he had acquired towards the turn of the twentieth century. Provenance: Wally Findlay Galleries, Palm Beach Private collection, USA, acquired from the above in April 1975 Artist biography: Gustave Loiseau was born 3 October 1865 in Paris. A Post-Impressionist painter, he is remembered above all for his landscapes and scenes of Paris streets. Brought up in Paris and Pontoise by parents who owned a butchers shop, Loiseau served an apprenticeship with a decorator who was a friend of the family. In 1887, when an inheritance from his grandmother allowed him to concentrate on painting, he enrolled at the École des arts décoratifs where he studied life drawing. However, a year later he left the school after an argument with his teacher. While working as a decorator, Loiseau redecorated the apartment of the landscape painter Fernand Quignon (1854-1941). After he left the École des arts décoratifs, Quignon tutored him in painting. In 1890, he went to Pont-Aven in Brittany for the first time, fraternizing with the artists there, especially Paul Gauguin and Émile Bernard. After experimenting with Pointillism, he adopted his own approach to Post-Impressionism, painting landscapes directly from nature. His technique, known as en treillis or cross-hatching, gave his works a special quality. Loiseau first exhibited at the Salon des Indépendants in 1893 and at the Salon de la Société Nationale in 1895. He also exhibited at Impressionist exhibitions in 1890 and 1896. Loiseau's paintings, revealing his passion for the seasons from the beginning of spring to the harvests later in the autumn, often depict the same orchard or garden scene as time goes by. Series of this kind, which also include cliffs, harbours or churches, are reminiscent of Claude Monet. Although Loiseau did not complete many portraits, he often painted people at work: dockers together with their boats, villagers leaving a Sunday service in Brittany or arriving at the market in Pont-Aven, or even carriages in Paris driving across the Place de la Bastille and the Étoile. He is also remembered for his paintings of Paris streets...

Rocky Inlet
By Karl Albert Buehr
Located in Fairlawn, OH
Rocky Inlet (France) Oil on canvas, relined, c. 1915 Signed: K A Buehr, lower right (see photo) Created during the artist's time in Giverny and Normandy Exhibited at Robert Henry Adams Fine Art, 1994, the first exhibitiion at the North Franklin Street Gallery. Provenance: Gift of the artist to his wife, Mary Hess Buehr The artist's niece, daughter of Will Hess David Saltzman Robert Henry Adams Gallery Condition: Craquelure to the paint surface (normal with aging of 100 years) Relined Canvas size: 11 1/8 x 14 1/4 inches Frame size: 16 x 19 inches “Karl Albert Buehr (1866–1952) was a painter born in Germany. Buehr was born in Feuerbach - near Stuttgart. He was the son of Frederick Buehr and Henrietta Doh (Dohna?). He moved to Chicago with his parents and siblings in the 1880s. In Chicago, young Karl worked at various jobs until he was employed by a lithograph company near the Art Institute of Chicago. Introduced to art at work, Karl paid regular visits to the Art Institute, where he found part-time employment, enabling him to enroll in night classes. Later, working at the Institute as a night watchman, he had a unique opportunity to study the masters and actually posted sketchings that blended in favorably with student's work. Having studied under John H. Vanderpoel, Buehr graduated with honors, while his work aroused such admiration that he was offered a teaching post there, which he maintained for many years thereafter. He graduated from the Art Inst. of Chicago and served in the IL Cav in the Spanish–American War. Mary Hess became Karl's wife—she was a student of his and an accomplished artist in her own right. In 1922, he was elected into the National Academy of Design as an Associate member. Art Studies in Europe In 1904, Buehr received a bronze medal at the St. Louis Universal Exposition, then, in 1905, Buehr and his family moved to France, thanks to a wealthy Chicago patron, and they spent the following year in Taormina, Sicily, where the artist painted local subjects, executing both genre subjects and landscapes as well as time in Venice. Buehr spent at least some time in Paris, where he worked with Raphaël Collin at the Académie Julian. Giverny and American Impressionism Prior to this time, Buehr had developed a quasi-impressionistic style, but after 1909, when he began spending summers near Monet in Giverny, his work became decidedly characteristic of that plein-air style but he began focusing on female subjects posed out-of-doors. He remained for some time in Giverny, and here he became well-acquainted with other well known expatriate America impressionists such as Richard Miller, Theodore Earl Butler, Frederick Frieseke, and Lawton Parker. It seems likely that Buehr met Monet, since his own daughter Kathleen and Monet’s granddaughter, Lili Butler, were playmates, according to George Buehr, the painter’s son. His other daughter Lydia died before adulthood due to diabetes. He returned to Chicago at the onset of World War I and taught at The Art Inst for many years. One of his noted pupils at the Art Institute was Archibald Motley...
